Yummy Mummy Day Count Down!

When you think of Mother's Day you think of flowers, a touching card and brunch right? My all-time favourite way of spoiling my mom when I was growing up was cleaning my room and the entire house. It's a nice thought (can you imagine what my room looked like the rest of the year??) but I'm pretty sure my mother would have enjoyed something a little more tangible that could possibly be found at say - a store! Don't get me wrong - she was always touched by our efforts of making the day special for her plus she never wanted us to spend money on her. I think every mother will tell their kids that but deep down they really want something spectacular (or maybe that's just what I want lol). This Mother's Day is very special for me and many of my friends that have had babies this year because we can officially celebrate it! All that fuss we used to make over our own mother's someone else will be doing the same for us! Oh how sweet it is!

If you want to stay on your mother's good side or want to make sure your significant other stays on your good side, here are some great yummy mummy gift ideas (I'd love to get) to show your love and appreciation. I think I'll have to pass this list on to my babes... ;)

1. For the mother who loves makeup and can't enough of it Sephora has a lot of great palettes like Nars' Artist Palette (#1 on my list!), Lorac's Picture Perfect palette which is a picture frame on the front and makeup palette on the inside (genius!), or Sephora's Summer Blockbuster Palette.

2. My mom has the smoothest skin I've ever seen on a woman of "wisdom". Skincare has always been an important part of her beauty regime and if you're mom is like mine she'll enjoy these wonderful skin care sets like Sephora's Sun Safety Kit which includes all the best sun products Sephora carries (a set I shall have to put on my list), Strivectin's 2 Step Mother's Day Set The Gift of Youth (who doesn't want to look younger?), or Philosphy's Skincare Essentials Kit which comes in their signature cosmetic bags.

3. When my brothers and I couldn't come up with something original we'd get my mom perfume. If your mother or you are a kid at heart and love sweet scented fragrances then Aquolina's Pink Sugar Luxury Set is the perfect choice. If timeless scents are more her style Dior J'Adore Gift Set or Bvlgari Pour Femme Gift Set are great classics. For the fruity and "delicious" DKNY's Be Delicious Mother's Day Coffret smells just like a yummy green apple or one of my favourites Fresh Sugar Lychee Gift Set. If she's a vanilla fiend like me all the Lavanila fragrances are sinfully wonderful. If she's a woman that loves exotic blends that remind her of a tropical island, try Island Michael Kors Hawaii. For the sensual and mysterious woman a favourite of mine has been Gucci Rush or Calvin Klein's Euphoria.

4. Do a spa day either at your favourite spa or something more cozy like at your home with a few other mothers! Have a girly day indulging in spa products like Bliss' Simply The "Zest" Lemon+Sage Spa-in-a-box, The Body Shop's Feet Treat Elite for those hardworking feet, or Cake Beauty's yummy scented Hand Treat Trio for those overworked hands.

5. If you really want to go over the top make a nice gift basket with all her favourite beauty products, music, books etc! Set up a mother's day brunch with her and her closet friends and have it catered. What a perfect way to spend the day!

There are many ways to make Mother's Day a special one so whatever you decide on give it your own twist and make it fabulous!

Beauty Review: Swimproof Eyeliner from Make Up For Ever!

My first review of Make Up For Ever's Aqua Eyes ($16 USD) was mediocre, but a reader left a comment saying they were her absolute favourites especially in Bronze. I was willing to give it another try and fell in love with Aqua Eyes in Bronze. All the colours from the line are highly pigmented and wonderfully bright. The metallic finish is definitely more interesting than a plain black one and looked amazing smudged into the lash line or as a shadow. It doesn't tug and glides on smoothly on the skin. Since it's not black I couldn't tell if it smudged but the colour definitely did not budge. It's a great alternative to bronze shadow when you're in a hurry and is neutral enough to compliment any look. Just line the eyes, smudge and you're done! Bronze looks great on everyone and enhances any eye colour. If you're heading to the beach for a swim and you want to have a little colour, Aqua Eyes will keep you looking picture perfect even dripping wet. Another definite must-have!

Beauty Review: Loose Lips New York

For a smaller brand that is quickly gaining popularity, Loose Lips New York is right on the heels of some of the world's biggest cosmetic brands. I've been pleasantly surprised by the great quality and lovely selection of colours.

Lip Plumping Gloss in Oxygen ($15 USD): I've been lucky to come across some great lip plumpers lately since plumpers really aren't my thing. Loose Lips NY's newest line of plumping glosses is enriched with Vo-Lip-Tuous lip serum giving fuller lips with sheer colour. Oxygen is a sheer pretty apricot shade with gold shimmer. There's no tingling sensation and the texture is very moisturizing and not sticky. I love wearing it on its own but Oxygen can be worn over top of other lip products. I can tell my lips are plumper right away - without that annoying tingling sensation sometimes it's hard to tell if the product is working. This shade is perfect for any time of the day or any occasion.

Indelible Creme Eye Shadow in Apricot Frost ($16 USD): I was really excited to try this product since Loose Lips NY's Indelible Eye Liner in Black Cherry became a favourite of mine last Fall. I love this shadow and it has been one of my go-to's in my cycle of shadows. The texture is creamy but it dries to a crease and water-proof powder finish. Applying the shadow takes seconds with your finger or a flat brush. The colour payoff is wonderful and it has a high frost finish so use a light hand and layer. Looks great as a base or on its own with a bit of liner. I wore it yesterday on a 2 hr bike ride and it didn't budge or crease. It also lasted into the wee hours of the night. This is a definite must-have especially for you glamorous women on-the-go!

Midsize Eye Shadow in Gold Digger ($12 USD): Don't you just love the name? This true yellow gold shadow has also become a favourite of mine this season. I forgot how beautiful this shade looks against bronze skin! Gold Digger reminds me very much of my once favourite M.A.C. eye shadow in Goldmine - same frost texture and colour but it's $2 cheaper than M.A.C.'s. I ran out of Goldmine long ago so I'm happy Gold Digger is similar. Gold looks great on everyone and is the perfect shade to get your eyes noticed this season!

Lumi-Shine Gloss in Cheer ($15 USD): Want shiny lips with full colour? Lumi-Shine gloss has a non-sticky texture and delivers full colour like a lipstick but with shine. Cheer is a pretty shade of mauvish-pink with silver shimmer. Lovely colour but not for me. I like pinks to either be soft and pale or bright and shocking without any berry or mauve tones in it. Pink is one of the hottest colours of the season so be sure to have one (or two or three) in your beauty stash!

Tinted Moisturizer with SPF 15 in Touch of Radiance ($22 USD): Tinted moisturizers were a staple in my makeup bag but when my skin started breaking out I needed more coverage. Now that my skin is getting better, I think I'll start using a tinted moisturizer again. I've been weary of products with an SPF since my skin has become so sensitive to it. I really wanted to love this one but my skin broke out into a slight rash around my cheeks, upper lip, and nose. Touch of Radiance is for darker/tan skin tones and blended in exactly with my skin! It had a luminous finish and offered pretty good coverage. The formula is nice and light and didn't feel like I was wearing any product on my skin. It's non-oily and packed full of vitamins. You can wear alone or under mineral foundation/concealer for more coverage. If it weren't for an allergic reaction this would definitely be a must-have for me!

Beauty Review: Lise Watier Gives Us Lips That Are Plumpissimo!

If you're not familiar with Lise Watier the brand is another Canadian hit that was created in Montreal. I'm a fan of the line and have a few products already that I consider are makeup artist staples: Lise Watier Professional Correctors in light and dark. I had never tried any lip products from the line until I received Lise Watier's newest plumping gloss, Plumpissimo, and lip plumping primer, La Base.

Plumpissimo La Base ($20 CDN): It is a plumping anti-aging lip plumper with collagen micro-spheres. It helps to visibly plump and sharpen the contour of the lips. I love this lip primer and use it all the time now. It holds the colour in place, prevents it from feathering, intensifies the pigment, and gives me fuller lips without a stinging sensation. Every time I apply this primer, it's like I've applied lip liner to my lips. It just gives me that definition without a heavy visible line. You can wear under any lipstick or gloss. It goes great under my Three Custom Light Brights!

Plumpissimo Gloss ($20 CDN): These glosses are a plumping anti-aging gloss. Comes in 6 Spring/Summer ready colours. I love these glosses and notice a plumper pout right away. It does have a tingly sensation when first applied but quickly goes away. My lips don't feel irritated after so that's usually a good sign. The glosses have amazing colour payoff and aren't sticky or tacky. They leave lips ultra shiny and wonderfully plump and luscious! Opalescence is a shimmery pearl that can be worn alone or over top of another lip product, Baie is a gorgeous coral-pink and my favourite from the line, Bronze is a beautiful true bronze. Baie and Bronze are definite must-haves this season! Happy shopping!

Beauty Review: Summer Neutrals With Vasanti Cosmetics

Neutrals in bronze, peach, and gold are my staples pretty much everyday. I like this handy little palette from Vasanti Cosmetics called Manhattan 24/7 Eye Colour Palette ($40 CDN). As you can guess, the palette was inspired by the glamorous women of New York. It takes you from day right into the evening with a beautiful mixture of neutrals.

The colour combinations are endless. Swipe on the lighter ones for day and give the eyes definition with the darker shades or amp it up for night by smudging the darker shades into the lash line and crease for a smoky eye and use the lighter shades to highlight. Soho is a neutral pearly champagne, Central Park is a golden peach shimmer, Wall Street is a medium brown with a hint of lustre, Tribeca is a metallic pearl pink, and Times Square is a burgundy brown w/ subtle coppery shimmer. I love all the shades but Central Park and Soho are my favourite. I don't think they're made to be worn wet because it caked and crumbled on my lid. The pigment stays on fairly good with well-primed lids and the colour goes on sheer at first but can be layered for more intensity. It comes with a handy mirror for those day to night transformations and a double-ended brush for lining and applying shadow, although I prefer using real makeup brushes. A palette of neutrals should be a staple in every woman's kit!

I love tinted lip balms. I never get sick of them. Vasanti's Tinted Lip Balm in Bahamas ($15 CDN) is a natural plum brown that is great for everyday. The colour is your lips but better. The tinted lip balm is ultra moisturizing and the colour payoff is great. It comes in a convenient sleek silver lipstick tube. If you're a lip balm junkie like me you'll love it! Happy shopping!

Beauty Review: Threading Junkies Vs. Waxing Junkies

I've confessed a few times that ever since I've had my bangs I've let my brows grow to unruly lengths. Besides being utterly lazy, I wanted to see how long I could get away without plucking my brows. I had let almost 3 months go by without touching my Tweezerman tweezers! My shape was almost non-existent and there was no way I was going to reshape them with a pair of tweezers! I decided that my mission was to experience a brow threading. I must be the last person on earth that's never had their brows threaded. For someone that claims to be up-to-date with everything beauty that's pretty pathetic!

Now that it's getting warmer out and I'm spending more time outside, I can't escape the dreadful whooshes of wind that blow my bangs up exposing my hairy beast of a brow! I've been starting to feel really self conscious about it even though I'm sure no one's really paying attention to me (but I know they are! haha). I had finally decided enough was enough around my birthday which was over a month ago and got my brows waxed (you can read about brow waxing from Civello's on ChickAdvisor.com). I had originally wanted to get my brows threaded but because there are fewer salons or spas that offer threading it was hard to get an appointment last minute with the ones that do offer it. I was definitely bummed out and decided my threading experience would have to wait. The waxing was great and was a definite improvement but by the end of the week my brows were beginning to grow back.

Today I finally got to experience the wonders of brow threading that I had been hearing so much about. A month has gone by since my brow waxing and a sure enough my brow hair had flourished once again. My cousin told me that the Trade Secrets in the Eaton Center offered threading services. Tania, the threading expert and manager of Trade Secrets, was unbelievable. It probably took her less than 5 minutes to thread and shape my brows! I've heard that threading lasts a lot longer than waxing because it pulls it out from the root rather than breaking the hair. So I'm hoping it'll last more than a week. Waxing is painful but threading is unfortunately more painful because it is constant (glad I have a high pain threshold!). The good thing is that it's quick and a lot cleaner looking than a wax job. I am thoroughly impressed and glad to say I've finally done it!

The world of threading has won me over and I shall have to say good-bye to waxing. No more goopy sticky messes! Are you a threading junkie or a waxing junkie? Would you recommend one over the other?

Beauty Review: Pops of Colour with Three Custom Color Specialists!

Photo L-R: Poppy Lip and Cheek Stain, Light Bright Lipsticks in Area and Palladium, Eye Shadow in Peacock and Mascara in Black

My makeup bag has lost about 20 lbs since receiving these lovely products. These pretty much have become my makeup staples for Spring/Summer (although I'll probably wear them all year round). If you want sheer, wearable, bright colours this season Three Custom is where it's at!

Top to Bottom:

Light Brights Lipstick in Area ($18.50 USD): It's all about the DayGlo brights of the '80's and bringing them into the present in sheerer textures. Area, named after one of the hottest clubs of the '80's in New York City, is a juicy bright tangerine. The moist balm base delivers moisturized lips with sheer brightness. When you first apply this colour, it is barely noticeable but applied a few times becomes a warm wearable orange. I love it! Area looks amazing when paired with bronze skin and Three Custom's Poppy Lip and Cheek Stain. These lipsticks are actually a moisturizing stain and lasts for hours. I also applied this onto my cheeks and it gave me a nice orange-peach dewy stain. All colours in the line are made to suit any skin tone. If you usually shy away from colour on your lips Light Brights are the perfect choice!

Poppy Lip and Cheek Stain ($20.50 USD): Love, love, LOVE this product! This stain blends really well and leaves a dewy glow on the cheeks. This warm bold coral is a colour that will look beautiful on any skin tone. It gives the skin a healthy flush like you've been playing some beach volleyball in the hot sun. Apply bronzer where the sun naturally hits you and dab on Poppy onto the apples of the cheeks to mimic the effect. Dab some onto the lips to finish the look. For some evening glitz swipe on a shimmery gloss. I love 2 in 1 products because they cut my makeup time in half and take up less room in my makeup bag. The compact includes a handy little mirror for touch-ups, although the stain stays put so no frequent applications. You can also build on the colour for more intensity. This lip and cheek stain is part of the Miami Glamour collection - a definite must-have!

Light Brights Lipstick in Palladium: I have come across a few favourite pink glosses in my time but never a favourite pink lipstick. Palladium, a striking hot pink of colour, has become THE lipstick I reach for all the time now! I love my gloss but it's been replaced for the time being. First swipe, it delivers a lot of juicy colour, not like Area so I like to dab it on first. It just perks up and brightens up my complexion. It looks hot (channeling my inner Paris) with a dash of bronze or gold shadow, and a little bronzer and Palladium on the cheeks. It's buildable and very wearable for day and perfect for a noticeable pout at night. I just love how it stains the lips for a natural effect but moisturizes at the same time. Sometimes gloss in hot weather can feel heavy and can add to an already shiny face. A stain in a bright hue is the perfect choice. Light Brights also come in two other juicy shades: Danceteria, flirty coral, and Limelight, a bright pop of pinky peach. Definite must-haves! Tip: make sure your lips are prepped with lip balm or a primer 5 minutes before applying lip stain. A stain will settle into fine lines and enhance dry chapped lips.

Peacock Eyeshadow ($19.50 USD): This gorgeous pot of teal shadow might seem frighteningly bright but thanks to sheer textures you can wear it day or night! When first applied it gives a nice wash of colour but layered more gives powerful pigment with flecks of shimmer. It's such a pretty colour and would actually look beautiful on anyone. Use as a liner for day and create a bright smoky eye for the evening. This shadow can also be used wet (intense colour) or dry (sheer/natural). Mix this with a gold shadow or purple for playful colour and navy shadow for extra smolder. Compliment this shadow with bronze or coral cheeks and lips. This liner is also apart of the Miami Glamour collection! You receive a free mascara when you purchase the Miami Glamour Collection! Offer ends April 30th so hurry! Click here for details.

Beauty Icon of the Month: Darling Drew

Who could forget Drew's unforgettable performance as adorable 6 year-old "Gertie" in the classic movie E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial? I was fascinated with Drew Barrymore at a young age and I remember being thirteen plastering my room with black and white Guess ads of her. I even sketched a picture of her which I still have today (I certainly did NOT do her justice)! I read her autobiography Little Girl Lost and was intrigued by the famed life she lived having gone to rehab by the time she was thirteen. Despite her troubled past, she was able to snag movie role after movie role and soon became one of the top paid actresses in Hollywood.

To add to her list of accomplishments, Drew will soon be the new spokesperson for Cover Girl Cosmetics! I've always adored her carefree wavy locks, laid-back sense of style, her sparkling personality, and her natural beauty. Nowadays, she's sporting sleeker hair, wearing sophisticated and form-fitting clothes to show off her slimmer bod, and her make-up is looking more gorgeous than I've ever seen her (Fabrizio who??). Drew is a beauty chameleon and it's no wonder she's the new face for Cover Girl. She ain't just a pretty face - she's got brains too. Drew will be co-creator of the ads which means she will be consulted on the graphics, lighting, concept and how the photo will be cropped. Unfortunately, we'll have to wait until 2008 to see the Cover Girl ads. Boo! With her romantic comedy's, undeniable fashion sense, and infectious smile you just can't help but want more of Drew!

Make-up 101: How to Apply Eye Shadow for Asian Eyes

Asian eyes are one of my favourite shapes to apply eye shadows on. Often times, my Asian customers would apologize for having "difficult" eyes to work with. No need to apologize - Asian eyes are a beautiful shape and with the right techniques you can enhance your eyes any way you want to. Lets begin shall we!

1. Tools: You'll need the proper brushes to enhance your beautiful eye shape. I recommend a slanted liner brush like MAC's #266, shading brush to apply colour like MAC's #217, a smudging brush like MAC's #219 and a brush for blending (very important!) like MAC's #224.

2. Prepping: Before applying any type of make-up you must prep your skin with a base. Use an eye cream that de-puffs and minimizes the appearance of dark circles and fine lines. Next prep your eye lid with translucent powder and an eye primer like MAC's Prep + Prime Eye. Priming your lids with a primer will help your shadow blend easily and will prevent fading and creasing.

3. Colours: Some Asian women are golden with yellow undertones and other Asian women are fair-skinned with pink undertones. Either can get away with wearing most colours under the rainbow especially since most have dark hair. For day time choose colours that are neutral like champagnes, taupes, and chocolate browns. If you have a pinker undertone stay away from anything with a pink or reddy base. Opt for more yellow based browns and beige tones. If your skin tone is more golden or yellow, stay away from colours that are too yellow based. For example, yellow golds or greens can make your skin look washed out and sallow. If you do wear these be sure to off-set it with something more cool based like a darker version of the colour or a dark liner.

If you like a little more colour for the day try soft sheer pinks and plum shades - nothing too candy coloured because it can look too garish under office lighting. If you can't part with your green eye shadow this spring/summer (green is a hot colour for this season!), try a khaki-green shade that has a sheer satin or matte finish, nothing too metallic or shimmery. Instead of applying it all over the eye, apply it as a liner instead by dampening your angled brush with a bit of water and mixing with the powder. If you're one of those girls that loves to smoke out her eyes 24/7, opt for a charcoal or slate grey rather than black as it can be too overdone for the office or daytime.

Don't be afraid to bump it up for night time. Have fun mixing different textures together like matte colours with glittery eyeliner or metallic shadows with a liquid liner. I love bright emerald greens, royal purples, turquoise, seafoam, and copper on Asian skin tones. If you're daring, candy hot pinks and tangerine oranges are also beautiful when applied properly.

Technique:
Daytime: Start off by dusting the lid (from lash line to brow bone) with a champagne or beige tone. To give the eye more dimension, choose a neutral tone 2 or 3 shades darker than your base ( I like MAC's Charcoal Brown, Satin Taupe, or Wedge) for your crease. Using your shading brush you're going to apply the colour starting from the inner crease and working your way to the outer crease similar to the pictures on the left. Because you're creating the illusion of a crease you want to make sure you use your blending brush to blend out any harsh edges. Just run your brush back and forth across your crease until the colour looks soft and almost appears airbrushed. I've seen some Asian women who purposely draw a straight line as a crease which ends up looking unnatural.

Next line your eyes with a deep chocolate brown or soft black in a waterproof pencil or gel liner (MAC's Fluidline in Blacktrack and Dip Down are awesome). Some Asian women's lids extend all the way down to their lashline and the liner on top is usually not visible. If this is the case with you, skip liner on the top and apply liner on the bottom lash line with your angled brush. Soften the liner with your smudging brush. I sometimes find that not lining the bottom lash line can make the eyes disappear and lining them actually gives more definition. If your lid doesn't extend into your lash line, line just the top lash line from inner to outer corner for a polished finish. Match with a neutral brush like MAC's Cubic or Prism and sheer lipstick or gloss in a dusty rose or a pinky beige like Nars' Stolen Kisses lip gloss (caramel pink) or Dolce Vita lipstick (sheer dusty rose).

Nighttime:
Smoldering: Go for a sultry eye using chocolate bronzes, charcoal blacks, metallic emeralds, eggplant purples and deep navy. To give the eye an extra smoky effect, I like to line the lash with a khol pencil like MAC's Eye Khol in Teddy, Smolder, Prunella, Tarnish, or Blooz and smudge it up into the crease area. I then apply a shadow in the same colour over top of the liner and blend it into the crease. It may look messy at first but do not fear because your blending brush is here! Work your blending brush back and forth until the edges are blurred or softened. Line the bottom lash line with the khol pencil and smudge. Apply the same colour shadow over top. Accentuate the brow bone with a light shimmery shade. Curl lashes and add lots of mascara - if you're a pro add some falsies to the outer edge of your lash. Brush on some bronzer or soft peach blush onto the hollows of the cheeks (if you have round cheeks like me avoid applying blush right on the apples - it just accentuates the roundness even more). Swipe on a peachy nude or pale pink gloss.

Classic but Modern: I LOVE this look. It's a softer and flirtier version of the classic look: soft eyes, black liner, defined brows, subtle rouge on the cheeks and a red pout. On the eyes, go for shimmery shades in pale golds or silver like MAC's Eye Paint in Base Gold or Nars' Single Eyeshadow in Bombshell. Apply on the top and bottom. For depth, add a soft brown or taupe in the outer crease. Line the eyes with a liquid liner like MAC's LiquidLast Liner in Point Black. If you prefer something softer smudge a black shadow into your lash line. Most Asian women have next to nothing lashes. If you're going to do this look I would go all the way and apply fake lashes. Fill in your brows and make sure they are well defined. To learn how to apply falsies read my older post: Make-up 101: Creating the Perfect Smoky Eye. Apply a soft pink blush on the cheeks like MAC's Pink Swoon for fairer skin or Dame for darker skin. What makes this look more updated is the undefined glossy red lips. Fill in your lips with a red shade like Nars' Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Cruella for fair skin and Forbidden Red for golden undertones. Soften with your fingers and apply a shiny gloss like MAC's Lip Gelee in Dewy Jube over top.

Colourful and Fun: If you like to have fun with your make-up try colours in bright turquoise shades mixed with violets, or emerald greens with bright golds, or red coppers with citrusy oranges (I like MAC's Parfait Amour, Tilt, Steamy, Humid, Juxt, Amber Lights, Bronze, Mulch, Paradisco, Coppering, and Goldmine). If you're going to use a lot of bright shades on the eye, keep the lips muted. Don't be afraid to try glitter either (just don't over do it - you don't want to look like a walking disco ball). If you're new to wearing colour don't think you have to apply every bright colour under the sun all at once (like the picture on the left). The formulations these days are more sheer than the 70's and 80's (thank god). Swipe on a shimmery green shadow, some liner, mascara, and gloss and you're set for the night. If you really aren't comfortable with colour on your lids, line the eyes with a metallic or glitter pencil in turquoise instead. It'll be edgy but still you.

That completes our lesson! This is only a guide line so figure out what really works for you. Whatever you do, remember to have FUN! Don't be discouraged if you don't get it perfect the first time around - practice makes perfect. Work with your eye shape. It can be frustrating and confusing trying to figure out what your skin's undertones are, but don't hesitate to ask a make-up artist for help. If there is a particular look you like in a magazine, practice copying it until you perfect it. Be proud of your unique eye shape and let those eyes shine!

If this was helpful, please let me know. If you still have questions or are confused, feel free to leave a comment and I will answer them right away. Thanks!

Too Much To Write So Little Time!

I'm desperately trying to finish a post I started 3 days ago and it just seems I never have time to complete it! I just wanted to let you know what was coming up in my next post in case you're checking back and annoyed I haven't posted anything new. I received this comment from a reader by the name of Denise:

Hi Joy!

What a great blog! Can't wait to see what you post next. :)

I have a beauty question for you. I was wondering if you could share some tips for applying eyeshadow for asian eyes. I don't exactly have the double eye-lid so I haven't quite figured out the proper technique yet. Plus, I would appreciate if you could recommend some brands and shades that would be suitable for wearing at the office (i.e something "natural" looking), as well as during a night out on the town. Thanks in advance!

Denise, thank you for your question and for stopping by! Coming up is "Make-up 101: How to Apply Eye Shadow for Asian Eyes". Stay tuned all you make-up junkies!

Beauty Reviews: Drugstore Brands vs. High End Brands

I've been asked a few times why I rarely recommend or review any drugstore brand cosmetics. I'll be honest - as a make-up artist I'm used to sticking with high end brands but that doesn't mean I think less of drugstore cosmetics. The drugstore is where I began my love affair with make-up and I still continue to buy a mascara or two here and there. Brands like Revlon, L'oreal, Maybelline, and Max Factor have gone above and beyond changing their formulations and packaging to match those of their higher end competitors. Make-up 101: Combating Oily Skin in the Summer

No body wants to look like they bathed in a tub of oil and it's especially hard to avoid it during the hot and humid summer months. Here are a list of products that will help you combat shiny oily skin:

1. Start off your morning regime with a good cleanser like Neutrogena's Rapid Clear Oil Controlling Foam Cleanser.

2. Moisturize your skin with an oil-free lotion that has an SPF 15 like Neutrogena's Oil-Free Moisture SPF 15.

3. It's always good to prep the skin with a primer prior to adding your foundation or base. The primer will create a nice smooth canvas for you to apply your makeup and will also help it last longer. Try Lorac's aquaPRIME Oil Free Makeup Primer.

4. I like to wear as little as possible when it comes to foundation especially during the warmer months. If you prefer a base that is natural and feels like your skin try a tinted moisturizer with an SPF like Lorac's ProtecTINT SPF 30 Oil-Free Tinted Moisturizer. If you prefer/need heavier coverage try MAC's Studio Fix Fluid SPF 15 Foundation. It's oil-free and long-lasting. A girlfriend of mine has really oily skin and she swears by it.

5. To avoid greasy lids always prep the eye area with a primer like Smashbox's Lid and Lip Primer. This will prevent your shadows from creasing and fading. Then set with an oil-free powder like MAC's Blotting Powder. It takes oil away without adding texture or colour to the skin.

6. If you want to look shimmery and glowy, focus on only 1 or 2 areas of the face to avoid looking like a spotlight. If you want a shimmery shadow, do a water-proof and crease-proof shadow like Bourjois Intensely Luminous Waterproof Cream Eyeshadow. Use a powder blush and nothing too glossy on the lips. Add a hint of shimmer on the cheekbones.

If you want shimmer or glow on the cheeks that's long-lasting, try Tarte's water-based gel stains in Bronze Goddess for a hint of shimmer. If you'd like more of a natural glow try Nars' Creme Blush in any of their amazing colours. A little goes a long way. Pair with a matte or satin shadow and a glossy lip or sheer lipstick.

If you want all the attention on the lips go for a nice shimmery gloss like Tarte's Inside Out Vitamin Lip Gloss. It comes in 3 shimmery colours and is actually good for you (Borba vitamin infused gloss)! If you want an even sexier pout layer a shimmery gloss over a shimmery lipstick like Shiseido's The Makeup Shimmering Lipstick. Match with either shimmer on the eyes or shimmer on the cheeks.

7. After you're done, set your make-up with an oil-free powder and use blotting papers throughout the day to take away shine like Clean and Clear's Oil-Absorbing Sheets. You can pick them up at your local drugstore. They're cheap and just as good as the higher end brands and with 50 sheets in the pack it's a steal!

By using the right products, your skin will look healthy and radiant and not like you've been sweating in a sauna. So glow on girlfriend!

Beauty Reviews (Cont'd): Yummy Scents and Smooth Skin - What More Could A Girl Ask For?

This post is all about body butters and hand creams! First up:

1. "Oh How I Love Me Some Cake!" Over the past few months I have bought a few hand lotions than the average person, but it's all in my quest to find the perfect one. Truth is, I think there are a few perfect ones out there and I just have to have all of them! I was so happy to find that the Sephora store in the Eaton Center carried Cake Beauty products. I had been told that it was being sold at Indigo but was disappointed when I went there and it was no where to be seen. I'm a hand cream fanatic so I decided to start out with Cake's Milk Made Velveteen Hand Cream. I wanted to snatch up the whole line but had to restrain myself - I'm a sucker for sweet smelling products! It's about $18 (CAD), but it's definitely worth it. It moisturizes my hands very well and lasts for hours. It's also not greasy and the smell is not overwhelming. It's a very subtle vanilla shake scent. A little goes a long way and comes in a decent size bottle. It also doesn't weigh your purse down because it's shape is almost flat rather than a cone-like shape which can be bulky. I think my next purchase will either have to be Desserted Island Creamy Body Buffer or Desserts On Me Whipped Body Spread. Don't the names make your mouth water??

2. "Your Body Butter Makes Me Feel Oh So Froosh!" I had gone to the One of a Kind Show with my friend a few weeks back and was delighted to see a few bath and body booths present. I had written a post about Froosh body products a while back and was excited to be able to feel and smell their products in person. I ended up walking away with Froosh Body Butter in Vanilla For Dry Skin. All the products are hand made and all natural. You can even go to the store and make your own bath products! I get very dry skin during the winter months and decided to give this one a go. I LOVE the way this lotion smells! It really smells like vanilla icing that you almost want to taste it! I still smelled like vanilla icing the next day! It definitely relieved my dry skin. It almost feels like real icing when you first touch it and is a little hard to spread on the skin. Don't be tempted to keep applying it because all you have to do is keeping massaging it into the skin. At first it feels a little greasy but once it's worked into the skin the greasiness disappears. They come in a decent size tub which will last you forever because again a little definitely goes a long way! And at $8 (CAD) you just can't go wrong! My next purchase will have to be the Lip Balm in a Tin which is only $4 a pop!

3. "It's a Love/Hate Relationship with Body Shop!" Most of the products I've bought or received in the past few months from Body Shop have been hits and misses. I've been a big fan of their Coconut and Shea Body Butters and Cocoa Butter Body Stick which I think they've discontinued. However, their Cocoa Butter Lip Care Stick and Shea Lip Butter left my lips feeling more chapped than before I started using them and the scent of the Almond Oil Daily Hand and Nail Cream was too strong for my liking. Well, on my birthday a few weeks ago I received their Passion Frust Body Butter from a friend which of course I was excited to receive. I tried it a few days ago and was not impressed with the scent at all. The smell had an almost waxy scent to it with a subtle hint of fruitiness. I expected that it would have smelled a lot more like a, I don't know, passion fruit? The coconut, shea, and cocoa body butters scents were true to their names so I figured the passion fruit wouldn't be any different. Well, it still moisturized my skin really well but it's too bad I can't stand the smell.

Well that rounds out my body butter and hand cream reviews for now! I have another review of Skin MD Natural Body Lotion that I'm still in the process of testing out. Stay tuned for the results! Happy shopping!

Beauty Review: I Heart Nars' Velvet Matte Lip Pencil and Duo Cream Eyeshadow!

A few posts back I had said that I would be posting some reviews from different brands. So many new products and so little time! Here's the first of my beauty review list.

Anyone that has read my site knows that I'm a HUGE fan of Nars products. Why you ask when there's so many other cosmetic lines that are just as good and less expensive? I love how Nars is always on the cutting edge of beauty. Unlike a lot of other brands, Nars is a trend setter and the quality of the products are definitely worth the price. Plus, the line was created by make-up artist and photographer, Francoise Nars. As a make-up artist, he has created a line that is up to industry standards and is also customer friendly. Not to mention, the colours come in a beautiful range of soft and bold colours, the textures are rich, the packaging is oh-so-chic, and the names are flirty and playful (hello "Orgasm"??).

My latest purchase from the line is the Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Calliope, a coral pink. I've been wanting something more on the matte side that was also easy to apply. It goes on velvety smooth and doesn't dry out your lips. It acts as both lip liner and lipstick so it's great for people on the go. It has great staying power as well. There is a variety of colours to choose from but I wanted something nice for spring/summer. During the summer I love looking glowy and bronzy and to avoid looking too shimmery or shiny I think a velvety matte lip is the perfect compliment. I love the shade because it's a nice neutral coral that can be toned down to be paired with smoky bronze eyes or the colour can be enhanced with a juicy orange gloss laid over top.

My other purchase from the line that I had been wanting to get (the Sephora closest to me just got it in stock!) is the Duo Cream Eyeshadow in Thebes, a sheer platinum shimmer and sheer gold shimmer. It's the perfect combo for the spring trends of silver and golds. It illuminates the eyes with just the perfect amount of colour. It claims to be long-lasting so I'll have to put it to the test once it gets warmer outside. The colour stays true all day but I still get little crease lines. However, I still love the portability and easy swipe application. It's also a perfect highlighter for brow bone and cheekbone. You can wear alone for a soft finish or under a powder shadow for a more intense effect.

There are still a few products from Nars that I've been dieing to buy! I'm trying to pace myself though. Tell me what your favourite Nars products are. Happy shopping!

Favourite Quote of the Day

"Make-up artists should hereby get the Nobel Prize for adding to human happiness. And so should hairdressers." by Sophie Kinsella Shopaholic and Baby

I've been a big fan of Sophie Kinsella and all her Shopaholic series for a long time. Her books are a light read and witty. I came across this line in her book that I just had to post because it's so true! Many times my co-workers and other make-up artists have felt undervalued at our job. I give props to all my fellow make-up artists that work at cosmetic counters because many times we are just not given enough credit. We beautify, act as a fill-in therapist the majority of the time, and are constantly stroking someone's ego. We are often judged right off the bat as being mean or snobby based on our appearance (I know - the beauty industry is all about appearances!). When we say "hi" don't automatically think we're trying to shove products down your throat. Many times I've said "hi" and received a, "I'm just looking thanks". If you're looking that's perfectly fine, but only say that when we ask you if you need help. If I'm mistaken hi simply means hi and should be responded accordingly, no? If you're in a hurry don't huff and puff if there's a long lineup. We do the best we can to quickly help each customer. If you need something quickly and are in a hurry don't come during rush hour.

Don't get me wrong - I've come across a fair share of make-up artists that ignore customers and walk in the other direction when they come their way. From my experience if you've come across a rude make-up artist it's usually because a customer has put them in a bad mood. However, it does not mean it gives us the right to take it out on customers. I think if you explain in a nice way to the make-up artist that she's hurt your feelings or what not I'm sure he/she will apologize. If the make-up artist does not apologize then you can report he/she to their manager.

I've been lucky to only come across a handful of rude or obnoxious know-it-all customers. On your next visit to your favourite make-up counter remember that we're not just there to fetch your products. We're there to enhance your natural beauty, to listen to your boy problems, to chat about the latest in fashion, to share a laugh or two, and give you tips on maintaining your super hot self. We can be your best friend or your worst enemy! Have it your way!

I'd love to hear your stories about a rude customer or make-up artist so please share!

Why I Love Make-up Artist Hung Vanngo!

There are moments in your life when you know you're in a good place. You know that if you just keep doing what you're doing, work hard and eventually you'll get to your destination spot in life. I haven't reached mine yet, but I think I'm steadily on my way there.

I received an email last week from one of my all time favourite make-up artists, Hung Vanngo, about my site. I remember when I first saw his name in my inbox I thought he may have sent it to me by mistake, but when I opened it I squealed with delight when I read, "Hello Joy". Here is what he said:

"Hello Joy,
How are you?
I don't think we ever met before, but I just came across your blog by accident.
I actually enjoy your blog very much and do check it often.
Hope all is well and best of luck with everything.
Take care.
Hung"

I remember sitting back in my chair silently just taking it all in. Some of you may be reading this and thinking, "That's nice, but big deal". This email and my shoot with Mooishi is probably one of the highlights of my career thus far. I have admired his work for years hoping one day I could do make-up and hair as beautifully as he does. I used to study his work along with many other make-up artists I admire such as Pat McGrath and Kevyn Aucoin. He was based in Toronto and now resides in NY. Hung has worked with the best of the best and his work continues to make an impact in the fashion industry. I emailed him and told him that I actually rang in a few products for him back when I was working for Red Earth. However, I was a little awe struck and didn't want him to be scared away by a crazed fan. So, I kept my mouth shut about my undying love for him.

Hung, if you're reading this I hope you're not embarrassed about me showering you with admiration. Thank you for being the amazing artist that you are and for inspiring me. And most of all thank you so much for taking the time to read my site!

Spa Day Tragedy!

A couple of weeks ago my two girlfriends and I decided that we would take time to hang out and have a girly spa day. It's been a while since any of us had been to a spa especially with each other. I was truly looking forward to relaxing and having someone else pamper me for a change. One of my friends surprised me for my birthday with a gift certificate from Spa Finder which I could use at any participating spa in the world. I was so stoked and went on the hunt right away for a spa in Toronto. There wasn't a wide variety of spas in the downtown core to choose from but my deciding factor was a spa that offered threading. I'm embarrassed to admit this, but ever since I got bangs back in January I have let my brows grow out of hand! I had never tried threading and had always admired how clean and precise my Indian customer's brow were.

Ambiance Day Spa at the corner of Yonge and Queen was the only spa out of my list that offered threading. I had never heard of it before but figured it wouldn't be bad since Fashion Magazine had given it a good rating. Last Thursday I booked a threading and manicure for me, my one friend a mani/pedicure and my other friend a 1 hr deep skin massage and manicure. They were very accommodating especially since I had called last minute. Trying to book a spa day right before the weekend usually never happens so I was quite pleased they were able to take all three of us.

Friday had finally come and I was so excited! My one friend met up with me earlier and my other friend would be arriving an hour later (they're both from the Durham region). When we arrived at the spa we were a little confused because Ambiance appeared to be closed. I started to panic a little on the inside, but then thought they were taking a break and would be back in a few minutes. I started to calm down but when I didn't see a notice or sign saying they'd be back I started to panic on the outside. We tried opening the door but it was locked. We finally looked to the side of the door and saw there was a notice. To our surprise and luck the spa had been shut down earlier that day because they were behind $10,000 + in rent! We were livid and could not believe this was happening! I called the spa and left a message venting my frustration about how no one had the courtesy to phone me and that there had better not be a charge on my visa. I also thought maybe the lady that booked my appointment the other day knew the spa would be shutting down and was trying to scam me out of some money (I think I watch too much tv lol).

After my angry message, my friend and I started calling every other spa we knew to see if they'd be able to take us last minute and of course everyone was booked. We even walked down Queen St. to see if Beauty Queen or Civello's would take us. The receptionist from Beauty Queen even laughed at us implying , "Nice try". To my amazement the owner of Ambiance Day Spa returned my phone call and apologetically explained that it was out of her control. The spa was locked before they had arrived to work and instead were called right away into a meeting. She said she would have definitely called me had she been able to get in the spa to retrieve my number. I was still a little annoyed but was trying to be empathetic to her situation. She assured me that if the spa will reopen at another location she will offer me 50% off on any service. First of all it was hard for me to feel sorry for her because if she or her management had paid the rent on time they wouldn't have been shut down! Secondly, thanks for the offer but I don't think I'll take my chances.

So, our spa day was officially ruined. I called my other friend and told her not to bother coming down anymore. I felt really bad because I had chosen the place but how was I supposed to know I had booked us with a shady spa?? We decided to do the next best thing which was to eat and drink! There's nothing like a few martinis and some tasty food to make you feel good again. After our dinner we checked out The One of a Kind Show which was cool but don't go if you're broke like I was! It's no fun walking around seeing things you can't buy. The upside was that there were a few bath and body booths there which I will review in a later post. I will also give you my review of Civello's Salon and Spa and my thoughts on Aveda's make-up and hair line. Stay tuned!

Have you had a spa day tragedy? Would love to hear it!

Beauty Review: My Juno Hits and Misses for 2007

The Juno Awards is the biggest night in Canadian music. What I love about Canadian award shows is that there is always a mixture of glam and rocker laid-back styles on the red carpet. There isn't anything pretentious about the show and everyone seems genuinely happy to reconnect with their Canadian roots and fellow musicians. Here are my hits and misses for tonight's Juno Red Carpet.

Hits:

1. Nelly Furtado, beautiful songstress and one of my all time favourite singers to groove to did not disappoint on the red carpet. She definitely brought a touch of Hollywood glamour to the Junos and looked absolutely stunning in her floor length black gown (I missed who the designer was). Her hair was pulled back into an elegant up-do and her make-up was flawlessly radiant. I loved the black liquid liner winged out to the side and the raspberry pink cheeks and glossy lips looked amazing against her skin tone. Nelly not only shined on the red carpet but hosted the awards show for the first time and won all of Canada over. Not to mention she brought home 5 awards including Album of the Year and Artist of the Year! Way to go Nelly!

2. I thought the gals of tv show Corner Gas, Gabrielle Miller and Tara Spencer, looked fun and sexy on the red carpet (you'd never know it was freezing in Saskatoon by the way they were dressed!). Gabrielle looked like a true fashionista in her sexy black little mini number and thought Tara looked sultry with her smoked out eyes and nude lip (love her dark denims too!).

3. I'm not really a fan of Keisha Chante's music but I was a fan of her $20,000 Valentino jewel-encrusted dress she wore tonight at the awards. I love loose waves but I thought the ends of her hair looked like they were fried, but her make-up looked fresh and beautiful.

4. I really liked Canadian Idol winner, Melissa O'Neil's, hair (I'm all about the bangs these days), but it was hard to see what her dress really looked like. I thought the colour looked great against her skin, and the plunging v-neck why not if you've got the goods, but I didn't really like the khaki trench with it. I know it was freezing but I'm sure there would have been a million better choices than that.

Misses:

1. Sarah Harmer is a beautiful woman with a beautiful voice to match. Tonight, however, she looked like she was meeting her girlfriends for lunch instead of attending Canada's biggest award show. Her hair looked like she pinned the side with a bobby pin, her make-up did nothing to make her look less tired or pale, and her dress looked frumpy and dowdy on her. Well, at least she can count on her fans for liking her music and not her fashion sense.

2. I thought country artist Carolyn Dawn Johnson looked like a layered mess. There was so much going on with her outfit. I love vest tops worn on their own, but her black shirt peeking out everywhere just looked messy. Her hair was in need of some major volume, but her make-up was nice.

3. Need I say more?? Only in Canada! haha

That rounds out my list! Who were your fashion hits and misses for this year's Juno awards?
