Holiday 2010: All I Want For Christmas Is...Tarte Good As Gold Lipgloss Collection!

Just because my lipstick collection is starting to rival my gloss collection, doesn't mean I don't appreciate a good gloss once in a while especially if they are from Tarte. If you're a gloss junkie, this might be a case of the "one for you, one for me" policy. It's a definite must-add to your Christmas wish list!

This limited edition set comes with 15 deluxe size lip glosses in a variety of shades. I love anything mini because well, mini just looks so darn cute! Plus, it's easy to carry especially with this season's little clutch purses. When it comes to gift giving, this set gives you many options. Give the whole set to one lucky gal or divide them up among your friends personalizing the shades and packaging.

 Top Row

I love the texture and feel of Tarte lip glosses. They are never sticky or tacky. The collection also offers a range of shimmery, pearl and creamy finishes. If you're looking for full colour look elsewhere. These glosses are sheer, but with noticeable colour.
Middle Row

Don't feel you have to wear each shade on its own. Layer a shimmery shade over a creamy, flat gloss or lighten a darker shade with a paler gloss.

Bottom Row
All the shades are pretty but none are really different than what's out there already other than the fact that these glosses are all-natural. This is a great starter set for gloss junkies starting out that only have a few shades in their collection. The glosses I've been wearing a lot lately is the bright, clear pink (2nd one) in the top row and the peachy-pink (3rd one) in the middle row. But when you have 15 shades to choose from, a new shade a day is in order!

What do you think of this gloss set? Will you be adding this to your wish list?

Tarte Good As Gold Lipgloss Collection retails for $29 USD and is available in Sephora locations or online.

Product was sent for editorial consideration and I honestly love it.

Makeup 101: Makeup For Everyday or A Professional Head Shot

I wasn't planning on doing a makeup 101 on a look I did on myself, but a friend of mine requested I post one so this one's for you Michelle (she's competing for Miss Universe Canada so be sure to vote here)!

This is my "professional" head shot. I realized all of the photos I have of myself were all self-shots - kind of pathetic I know but we all do it! Plus, I hate taking photos by myself. I was asked by someone in the media to submit my photo to include in an article and thought it would be completely embarrassing to use a distorted self-shot. To save some money, I took it into my own hands and organized a mini photo shoot for myself. Thanks to my husband's Canon SLR, tripod, reflector, flash, my Zuca to sit on and a handy wireless trigger I was able to pull off this photo. It took many shots, expressions and lighting variations to get it just right.

When deciding on the look, I wasn't sure if I should go with my favourite bold lip or a smoky eye. When I thought about how I wanted people to perceive me I wanted the look to be approachable, professional and demonstrate who I am as an artist. I also wanted my makeup to translate well in a black & white photo.

Here is a breakdown of the products and how I achieved this look. This is definitely wearable for day and night. If you want to go a little more dramatic add your favourite bold lippy.

Skin:
  • Consonant Ultra Moisturizing Organic Face Cream (sample - review soon)
  • Consonant Ultra Firming Organic Eye Cream (sample - review soon)
  • Korres Vitamin E Silicone-Free Primer (my face was hyper sensitive that day from a concealer I had tested out the day before)
  • Face Atelier Ultra Foundation Pro #7
  • Benefit Erase Paste Concealer (under eyes)
  • Smashbox Hydrating Halo Powder

Eyes: I lose a lot of my lid when I open my eyes so I wanted something that would stand out but not be overly dramatic. Instead of going smoky, I exaggerated my liquid liner a little thicker than usual and started the line in the middle winging it out and up.
  • Too Faced Shadow Insurance (love the squeeze tube and it's just as good as UDPP)
  • Base: matte neutral beige from the Tarte Jewelry Box palette
  • Crease: matte light grey and a matte taupe grey over top, both from the Tarte Jewelry Box palette
  • Hourglass Calligraphy Liquid Eye Liner - I brought the line up to where my crease folds then filled the line in. I blended the matte neutral beige slightly over the liner at the middle of the lid. When I have my eyes open, it looks like the regular winged eye liner, but when I close my eyes or look down the shape of the liner adds an unexpected twist on the classic winged liner look.
  • CoverGirl Original Waterproof LashBlast mascara in Very Black
  • Brows: the soft black matte shadow from the Tarte Jewelry Box palette
Cheeks:
  • Bailey Cosmetics Foundation Duo in Dark as my contour
  • Smashbox Halo Bronzing Powder in the hallows
  • NARS Douceur Blush higher on the cheekbones for a slimmer effect - I have round cheeks :)
  • DaLish Cosmetics Cheek and Lip Balm in Pearl Luster - highlight along the cheekbones (review soon)
Lips:
  • Consonant Ultra Moisturizing Lip Conditioner (review soon)
  • Benefit Lip Plump - I started using this again and remembered why I loved this product so much in the past. It's a great lip primer and fills in fine lines and accentuates the contour of your lips. If your lips naturally have a lot of colour, this is awesome to use as it creates a nude canvas so the true colour of your lip product will come through. It also helps your lip product stay on longer especially if you're wearing a gloss. You only need three little dots to spread all over the lips. Make sure you let the plumper dry before applying your lip colour. This is a better option than using concealer or foundation to cancel out your lips.
  • Lip Colour: mark. Gloss Gorgeous Stay On Lip Stain in Bare - I am so in LOVE with these gloss stains from mark.! I will have to do a full review soon. I love stains but as the weather gets drier and colder, my lips need more moisture. This is the perfect combo between stain and gloss. My lips that day were actually really chapped and I found this gloss stain did not accentuate it at all. And it's one of the most inexpensive lip products I've purchased!
For my hair, I actually blow dried (which I rarely do) and round brushed it for some volume then did a few brush curls. I defined a few pieces by taking sections and wrapping it around a curling iron for a nice wave. I sprayed Schwartzkopf Glamour Queen volumizing spray at the root then sprayed all over for a light hold. I wanted it to look polished but not too perfect.

The overall look was clean, flawless and classic and totally conveys how I do makeup on all my clients. What do you think of the look? Do you do your makeup to show your personality?

12 Days of Holiday Beauty: Bright, Pink Lips!

If you’re deciding on a bold lip this season, don’t just reach for the typical red lipstick. Yes, red lips are glamorous and classic, but it’s not the only shade you have to rock for the holidays. If you’ve never considered bright, pink lips for your next Christmas party, do reconsider. This season, say “hi” to Bold Red’s little sister, Bright Pink. It’s a fun, unexpected, more youthful take on a bold lip.

In the past, I would only think of wearing bold pink lips in the Spring and Summer months. I’ve realized bright pink looks amazing all year long. Since you want your lips to be the focus, compliment the pink with a sweep of bronze or gold shadow across the lids. If your eyes need a little extra definition like mine do, apply a liquid liner and wing it out to the side. Apply a couple of coats of black mascara. All you really need on the cheeks is bronzer; sweep the bronzer onto your cheeks, concentrating most of the colour towards the hairline for a natural contour. Dust whatever is remaining on your brush down the bridge of your nose, temples, and chin.

Bold pinks can be quite shocking to someone who isn’t used to wearing colour. To ease into it, try a bright but sheer pink gloss with some shimmer. To keep it long lasting and to prevent the edges from bleeding, use a lip primer and outline the lips with an invisible lip liner. If you love to be the center of attention, go for a full colour lipstick or gloss. If you’d like a more polished and precise looking lip, outline the lips with a lip liner first in a similar shade. Then apply your lip colour with a lip brush. For something less polished and no-fuss, skip the lip liner. Prep lips with a lip primer then press a pink lipstick into your lips with your ringer finger. Smooth out the outline of the lips so that there are no visible lines.

When you’re thinking of a holiday pink, forget candy or baby pinks. Think bright fuchsia, berry, and magenta. Don’t be afraid of shimmery textures either. Whatever event you’ll be attending, you’ll be sure to stand out in the sea of red lips!

What do you think of the bold pink lip trend for the holidays?

12 Days of Holiday Beauty: Shimmer & Shine!

Christmas is less than a month today! Let the mad dash begin! I’ve never been good at planning ahead and I’m sure with all the holiday shopping, holiday parties, planning a big festive dinner, looking good is probably the last thing on your to-do this season.

Thanks to PTPA Social Media mom, Heather, who has inspired me to do 12 days of holiday beauty! Look holiday ready and ultra glam while you’re mashing those potatoes.

“On the first day of Christmas my true love said to me…Wear lots of sparkle!” Nothing says holiday beauty than lots of shimmer and shine . Obviously this photo is an extreme version but you get the idea.

There are so many products out right now to give your eyes a little dazzle. Do a sweep of a shimmery shadow across the lid in silver, white, gold or champagne. Big, gorgeous lashes will help those peepers pop even more. For some extra glamour, swipe on a black liquid liner and wing out for a dramatic effect. If you’re using a loose shimmer powder, always make sure your eyes are prepped with a primer. Apply a cream shadow first all over the lid so the loose shadow has something to adhere to. This will keep your shimmer shadow from creasing and fading throughout those holiday cocktails.

If shimmer all over the lid is too much for you, opt for a beautiful eye pencil with a metallic or glitter finish. There are so many great shades to choose from right now. For a dash of colour that isn’t over-the-top, try a glitter pencil in the some of the season’s hottest shades: emerald, purple, and blue!

To keep a soft shimmery shadow radiant and fresh, apply a rosy pink blush for a healthy glow. Add a shimmer highlight to the cheekbones. To avoid looking like you belong on a Christmas tree, go for a creamy or matte texture on the lips in rosy pink or red tone.

One look down and 11 more to go! Do you love shimmer and sparkle?

Holiday 2010: All I Want For Christmas Is...Add This To Your Wish List!

Shimmer! Glimmer! Sparkling! Shine! You know the holidays are here when all the makeup collections are all blinged out. The next few weeks, Makeup Junkie will be featuring holiday goodies that should be on your wish list whether it's for someone special or yourself.

For The Ultimate Glamazon - Tarte Cosmetics The Jewelry Box ($52 USD): I. Am. In. Love. This box of makeup heaven is packaged in a luxe gold quilted box adorned with a detachable gold and black necklace that I've been wearing every chance I get! I love layering it with my gold chain link necklace - it looks fab with any party dress or wear with a plain ol' shirt to amp up your look.

After you've been dazzled by the necklace, your eyes will pop with excitement once you open up the box! The kit comes with 32 new eye shadows, 8 lip glosses, a Tarte best-seller of Park Avenue Princess Mineral Powder Bronzer full-size, full-size shimmer powder, and five deluxe long-wearing shimmery eyeliners.

I did a quick swatching of the shadows so some of the shades might not look as pigmented but they are and have good staying power. I love that it comes with a good amount of matte shadows. A lot of holiday palettes are all shimmery but I love layering shimmer and matte textures together. It looks more wearable and in photos looks more flattering. The liners are pretty and add a little fun and sparkle to your lash line. For long-wearing liners, I found they started to fade towards the end of the night.

The shimmer and bronzer are gorgeous and leave your skin looking radiant. However, on my med-dark skin I have to apply a couple of layers to really see the bronzer. I adore all the lip glosses. I was expecting them to be really sheer but these glosses pack a punch. You can wear each on their own or layer to make a custom shade.

Not only will this thrill the glamazon's in your life (or you), but it will fancy those who only wear all natural products. The price is definitely worth it from packaging to product. Go crazy and create 100 different looks this season!

For The Sophisticate - Tarte The Royal Collection ($43 USD): This is for the woman who just needs all her essentials - no fuss or muss. The Royal Collection will keep you looking polished with 16 exclusive wearable eye shadows that can bring you from day to night. The palette packaged in it's signature purple also includes deluxe sizes of Clean Slate Natural Face Primer, Lights, Camera Lashes!, MultiplEYE Lash Enhancing Primer, a Vitamin-Infused Pink Lip Gloss.

Again, the palette comes with a good mix of shimmery and matte shadows. Lately, I've been wearing the grey-mauve matte shadow with one of the light matte pinks, black liquid liner, and soft nude pink lips. All the shadows are gorgeous but this combo works for day or night and has a '60's mod feel to it. Love it.

The primer is great and makes your skin feel really smooth. I love primers and have a collection that is growing! I had always wanted to try the mascara. It promises to volumize, lengthen and curl. When I first apply it, I love it. My lashes look lifted and feathery, but the formula is kind of soft and by the end of the day my lashes start to droop. The primer definitely added fullness to my lashes especially since I've been using Latisse (will have to do a separate review for that), but my lashes would clump more when I applied any mascara over top.

I love the Tarte glosses because they don't feel sticky on the lips and they are good for you inside-out. This pink gloss has gold flecks in it and looks lovely for those days when you want a sheer shine. It doesn't have all the bells and whistles of the Jewelry Box but it offers great value!

Have you tried any of these must-have limited additions from Tarte? Love 'em? Hate 'em? Want 'em?

Both palettes are available at Sephora locations and Sephora on-line.

The Ladies. The Beauty Products. The Beauty Board!

The lovely Stephanie Daga of Blush Pretty hosting the event and doin' her thang!

When there's an event with everything I love - good food, great company, and of course beauty products - I'm there! I was invited by Stephanie and thrilled to be apart of my first Beauty Board. I had the awesome pleasure of demoing holiday beauty trends on 2 models attending the event. Now the thing with women who love their beauty products - it's hard to pull them away even if it's to get their makeup done by a pro. While my group was small, I still had a fun time showing the women the latest trends using products from the vendors at the event.

I did a second look doing a jewel tone smoky eye on another lovely model using a gorgeous Vasanti eye shadow palette and loose eye shadow powder. The green in her eyes just popped! I used a DaLish gloss mixed with a gold shimmer powder from Vasanti on the lips.

Brands in attendance:

Lovely Emily from Cake Beauty! Heather was there as well but I didn't catch her in the photo. It was great to put a face to the names. Their booth was always crowded and for good reason! Beauty Scoop: Cake is giving away 2 miniature Satin Sugar Hair & Body Refreshing Powders (1 of each shade) starting today until December 2nd! Visit www.cakebeauty.com for this sweet deal!

The awesome CEO, Melanie Cruickshank, of DaLish Cosmetics. The line gets you looking glamorous in simple, easy-to-use products. I love the Lip Balm/Cheek Blush balms!

Founder and creator, Andrea of Cheeky Monkey Cosmetics, is one smart, witty and hilarious woman! I don't know how many polish applications she did that night - everyone wanted to get their hands on these edgy polishes!

The sweet Kristin from the all-natural Canadian skincare line, Consonant, which I'm totally in love with right now. My skin feels amazing!

The awesome Gargi from Vasanti workin' her magic on one of the Beauty Boarders. If you haven't heard, Gargi broke the world record of most lipsticks applied in one hour at the National Women's Show!

The lovely ladies from Mary Kay who were so sweet and answered my many questions. I have yet to do a review from the Fall collection but my fave product from the collection is the baked shimmer powder in Dusk.

Loved Heather from Cake! She got her nails did at the end of the night in one of my fave shades Tease!

It was a perfect night filled with all things beauty. Besides the swag (and there was a lot of swag), the cool part was catching up with Stephanie!

She's an awesome, beautiful and inspiring mommy-preneur who loves beauty as much as I do. I felt like I had known her for years and we hit it off right away. With organizing beauty events, working as a freelance makeup artist, writing a blog, maintaining an on-line beauty store, working at a spa studio, giving sewing lessons, being a wife, and a mom two too little boys I don't know where she finds the time! Thank you so much for a fun night and for letting me being apart of it! I'm already looking forward to the next one!

Stay tuned for my favourite products from the event! To read more about The Beauty Board check out Stephanie's blog for updates and reviews! To see more photos from the event click here.

Have you been to The Beauty Board? It's a must-attend event!

Celebrity Beauty: Vampire Diaries' Nina Dobrev

The gorgeous Nina Dobrev from hit show, The Vampire Diaries, was in town last weekend to attend the Gemini Awards. In case you didn't know, Nina is Canadian! My husband makes fun of me all the time because, I, a woman in her 30's, has a major school girl crush on the entire cast!

The uber talented Senior M.A.C. Artist, Jane McKay, created Nina's beautiful look for the Gemini's. Check out what she used:

Skin: Nina's skin is so perfect she wore minimal foundation.
  • Strobe Cream and Care Blends Essential Oil to moisturize the skin
  • Select Moisture Cover Concealer and Mineralize Skinfinish Natural to even out skin tone
  • Sculpting Powder in Lightsweep and Mineralize Blush in Dainty to give her cheeks a sculpted glow
Eyes: Jane went for natural drama.
  • Fluidline in Dipdown for liner that stays all night
  • Eye Shadows in Club, Carbon, and Soba - Nina's blue dress was the inspiration behind the duo-chromatic eye shadow in Club (blue/brown shade)
  • Eye shadow Quad in Caviar Dreams (Champale Collection, not out yet. Pictured above) for a smoky eye that draws lots of attention. Iridescent Powders in Silver Dusk and Golden Bronze
  • Zoom Lash Mascara in Zoomblack for extra volumized lashes
  • Chromagraphic Pencil
  • #32 Lashes for that extra oomph!
Lips:

  • Dazzleglass Creme in Passing Fancy (from our Tartan Tale holiday collection. Pictured above). A glossy neutral coral lip is the complimentary colour to her blue eye makeup, which allows the eyes and lips to stand out against each other.
What do you think of Nina's look?

Makeup Junkie Loves...Cougar Boots!

Yes, the 2 stylish boots you're looking at are from the classic brand Cougar Boots! Back in the day, they weren't known for being fashionable, although I kinda like the old camel-coloured construction looking boots. Cougar Boots were made for our Canadian harsh winters, making sure our footsies stayed nice and toasty all winter long. Now that the brand has established the warm and durability factor, Cougar Boots figured why not keep warm and look stylish too?

I was really excited to be apart of the Matchstick program and test drive these lovely booties. I always have a hard time shopping for boots whether it's for rain, snow, or work because I can't fit into most boots. I have been "blessed" with unusually big calves for someone who is petite. I can never find boots that fit my calves so you can imagine how frustrating it can be.

Cougar Regal Rain Boots ($85 CAD): As you can tell from the above photo, I've been getting a lot of use out of these boots. I was actually in the market for new rain boots that didn't look like a traditional rain boot. I love the biker feel to it - it makes any outfit look edgier. I've been wearing this whether it's been rain or shine and happy to report it keeps my feet nice and warm in the wet weather. It has a polar fleece lining and can withstand temperatures from 0 degrees C to - 24 degrees C. Perfect choice for those slushy winter days as well. They are also super comfy and the best part is that they fit my calves! As you can see, they are pretty snug but if I can get my foot in it's a keeper! The boots also give me a bit more height so that's a bonus. And what can I say - I love black! The shiny rubber material makes it easy to clean and it's waterproof.

The green logo on the back adds a nice touch to the overall look of the boot. It just gives it that extra cool factor.

Cougar Boots Ravishing Winter Boots ($170 CAD): Seriously, these boots could not feel cozier and warm and they are super cute! LOVE the polar plush lining and the faux fur detail. You can also roll the fur trim higher up the leg or wear it mid-calf. I love the adjustable straps so there's enough room for thicker socks without feeling too tight. And yes, they fit my calves! These boots can withstand temperatures of -10 degrees C to -30 degrees C so you can have fun in the snow without freezing your toes off. Oh, and the mix of nylon and suede materials are waterproof! We haven't had any snow yet (thank God!), so I haven't really been able to test them out. But Cougar Boots are a quality you can count on.

Cougar Boots will for sure make a comeback and be on the feet of every fashionista. Be sure to visit the site - plenty of uber cute booties to choose from! These are a definite Makeup Junkie winter fashion must!
