Hope For Haiti Sponsor Profile: Vidal Sassoon!

Continuing with our sponsor features for Hope For Haiti is the trend-setting hair salon,Vidal Sassoon!

Vidal Sassoon: Vidal cuts and colours are known for being technically precise and cutting-edge. Do you remember when everyone and their mother was getting the asymmetrical bob a few years ago? Vidal Sassoon created "the bob" during the 60's and keeps reinventing it in an edgy more fashion-forward way. If you're looking for a trendy new do, then you're in good hands at Vidal Sassoon!

Two years ago I had the pleasure of getting a complimentary cut and colour in the swanky Yorkville area. To read my review click here.

Thank you to the wonderful team at Vidal Sassoon for contributing to our Hope For Haiti beauty event!

It's crazy but we have already reached capacity only 2 days after announcing the event! If you'd like to be put on the waiting list please visit our Facebook event page here. We will confirm your space on Tuesday, February 2nd. A HUGE thank you to everyone that is coming out to the event and to all our wonderful sponsors! All proceeds will be donated to the Red Cross.

Hope For Haiti Sponsor Profile: FACE atelier Cosmetics!

Today Makeup Junkie features a staple in my kit, Canadian cosmetic line FACE atelier!

FACE atelier: What can we say about CEO and founder, Debbie Bondar, other than she's an absolute sweet heart and one amazing businesswoman! As a woman in her fifties (doesn't she look fabulous?) with two grown daughters, she wanted to create a line that would empower women of all ages to look their best. FACE atelier products is such a versatile line that anyone can customize to their needs.

I own the entire Ultra Foundation Pro line and all my clients love the results! The silicone-based foundation makes your skin look and feel smooth and flawless. Rather than settling into fine lines or wrinkles, it floats on top of the skin. I've turned many-a-makeup-junkies onto the magic of Ultra Foundation! For past reviews click here.

Thank you to Debbie and the awesome team at FACE atelier for being apart of this special cause!

Hope For Haiti Sponsor Profile: CARGO

Today we are featuring the fabulous makeup artist favourite Canadian line CARGO Cosmetics!

CARGO: The first product I was obsessed with from CARGO was the line's jumbo-sized Lip Gloss tins. Since then, I have been obsessed with many favourites from CARGO. Founder Hana Zalzal created products that would be equally useful for makeup artists and easy enough for regular beauty lovers to enjoy. CARGO's innovative lines such as PlantLove, an all-natural line, and blu_ray, one of the first High-Definition makeup lines, are why the brand has gained cult-classic status.

Spring Preview Review: Benefit Flawless Complexion Helpers

I swear, whoever is behind the packaging design over at Benefit knows what makes girly-girl beauty lovers squeal with delight! It's no secret that I absolutely adore the packaging, but what's even better? Their products are actually functional.

Benefit Confessions of a Concealaholic ($44 CDN, available March 2010): The pad-lock diary packaging brings me back to my youth. When I received this kit I seriously squealed like a little girl. My husband turned to me and said, "Like a kid in a candy store". So true. How brilliant is this concealing and brightening kit? You have everything you need to spackle, cover and brighten in here.

Kit includes: travel-size "that gal" brightening face primer, boi-ing concealer in 1 & 2, travel-size erase paste No.2, eye bright, lemon-aid colour correcting eye-lid primer, and 4 concealer/brightner brushes. Inside is a good sized mirror and comes with a complete step-by-step guide for the makeup challenged.

erase paste is my god-send! I never leave home without it. This tub of creamy goodness brightens and conceals all in one. You can read a past review here. boi-ing concealer is a heavy duty cover-up but only comes in 3 shades. I like to use lemon-aid after plucking because it gets rid of the redness. As a primer it works ok but it did crease my shadows a bit. I've used eye bright back in the day but was not a fan because it gave my under eyes a slight grey cast and gave me a rash. That's just on me though. It was my first time trying "that gal" brightening face primer and I'm in love! I loved how radiant the pink primer made my skin look and my makeup stayed fresh all day. Will definitely get a full-sized version when this is done.

Overall, the concept is genius if you have fair to maybe medium-dark skin but if your skin is any darker the shades will look off. Now if Benefit would extend their shades then we're talking!

Benefit STAY Don't Stray stay-put primer for concealers & eyeshadows ($30, available February 2010):  I was really excited when I heard Benefit would be coming out with a primer for eyes and concealer. When I received it, I put it to the test right away.

The Good: The primer is really concentrated and a little goes a long way. It contains vitamins C & E to fight the signs of aging. The primer helped even out and brightened up my eyelids.

The Bad: First, I expected the primer to be clear but it in reality looks like a light beige concealer. I think going clear would have been a better option. I found that it changed the shade of my concealer, therefore, making my under eyes look white. Secondly, I hate the airless pump. Every single time way too much product would dispense. Since it is so concentrated, I'd end up dabbing a tiny bit and wasting the rest. Third, rather than making the skin around my eyes look hydrated, it dried out my skin and enhanced my fine lines. And lastly, my shadow didn't crease but did fade by the end of the day.

I rarely get disappointed with Benefit products but this one was not a winner for me. I'd be interested to hear other reviews! :)

Benefit Bathina "take a picture...it lasts longer..." ($32, available February 2010):  Similar to Bathina "body so fine", this golden-pink velvet body balm makes your skin look luminous. Just brush on wherever you'd like a little sheen and glow. Your skin will feel fabulous from the jojoba seed oil, natural aloe extract, and vitamin E ingredients. Oh, and the velvet puff - love! Pamper yourself by smoothing the balm on with the cushiony-pillow.

Benefit Cosmetis available at Sephora, Shoppers Drug Mart and Pharmaprix Beauty Boutiques, Murale, and select Holt Renfrew locations beginning February 2010.

Stay tuned for eye shadow swatches from the Spring collection!

Hope For Haiti Sponsor Profile: Cake Beauty

I announced yesterday that I will be doing makeup at the Hope For Haiti Beauty Benefit in Toronto on February 7th. It takes a dedicated team of people to organize a charity event and it would definitely not be possible without the contributions of our amazing beauty sponsors!

I'm proud to feature some of the world's top beauty lines who also happen to be Canadian! Take a moment to read about one yummy bath and body line we absolutely adore, Cake Beauty!

Cake Beauty: Creator, Heather Reier, knows what women love to indulge in - decadent bath and body products that smell delicious and are good for your skin. Who knew you could create a top-selling bath and body line right out of your own kitchen! And that's exactly what Heather did.

Today Cake Beauty is a cult favourite and is sold worldwide. The line both titillates the senses and includes ingredients like mango and shea butters, marshmallow, coconut and jojoba oils, turbinado sugar, pure essential oils and whole milk. The icing on the cake (pun intended)? The adorably chic and girly packaging!

Cake fans can't get enough of these rich, delectable products that are good enough to eat! Some of my favourites from Cake Beauty include the Milk Made Velveteen Hand Creme! For past reviews click here.

Thank you to the team at Cake Beauty for your contribution!

Spring Preview Review: Sweet Cheeks!

Stop, you're makin' me blush! From candy pinks to sweet peaches, you'll want to show off those cheeks this Spring. Don't be coy - blush on with these sweeter than sweet blushes!

Coral Peaches:

Top swatch: not blended, Bottom swatch: blended

Bobbi Brown Pot Rouge in Cabo Coral (available February 2010):  I am all over this creamy blush - one of my favourites for Spring! Cabo Coral  gives the cheeks a gorgeous healthy glow, perfect for this drab weather or if you suffer from dry skin. This coral-peach shade gives you a beachy pop of colour, a definite perk-me-up shade. I also found it to last into the evening without retouching. The texture works great as a stain if you don't suffer from chapped lips. I liked patting this onto the lips then adding a gloss over top for some depth and moisture.

Tip: To guarantee longer wear on the cheeks, apply after foundation then set with translucent powder.

M.A.C. Blush Ombre in Ripe Peach (Spring Colour Forecast available February 2010):  How gorgeous does this blush look in the compact? I love the gradient colour of coral to light peach - another staple for Spring! The Spring Colour Forecast features for colour stories: coral, pink/lavender, yellow/gold and plum/burgundy.

Ripe Peach is from the coral family and is a striking shade that gives your cheeks a sweet pop of colour. The texture is super blendable and leaves a subtle glow. The shimmer isn't over the top either so you don't have to worry about appearing too shiny.

Top swatch: blended, Bottom swatch: not blended

Beauté Cosmetics Liqui-Gel Stains in Neon: Memories of neon bring me back the garish 80's but Beauté's version is anything but! The neon orange may look shocking in the tube, but once its blended you will adore the coral-pink glow it leaves behind. These stains have some serious staining power too - you have about 12 seconds before it sets so I suggest dabbing a little at a time (if you don't want it to stain your fingers blend with a blush brush or sponge). You won't have to worry about this blush fading throughout the day.

Bonus: you can use this on the lips as well! The gel texture cushions your lips and works best when your lips are dry. However, if you have chapped-skin the stain will only enhance it. Moisturize your lips when you start applying your makeup.  By the time you get to your lips, the lip balm will have set into your lips then you can apply the stain.

Benefit Sugarbomb Boxed Powder:  Swirl these four shades of peach, soft plum, shimmering pink and rose together and your cheeks will get a sweet rush of colour - or so they say. I got to test this powder out back in October only I didn't test it on myself. This blush is a sheer peach-pink on fair to medium skinned beauties but on medium-dark skin like moi, it barely shows up. I was so excited when I was sent a sample but disappointed after trying it. However, it works nicely as a highlighter or an all-over powder but I have enough of those!

Lancome Pop 'n Cheeks Blush in Coral Flirt (O My Rose by Aaron de Mey available February 2010):  Love the presentation of this blush - it's like a little piece of art. The peachy-coral shade is very pretty but the gold glittery shimmer is a little too intense for me. Yes, you can apply the colours separately then use the gold as a highlighter but if you're using a proper sized blush brush that just doesn't work. All that bling on the face during the day might cause some to squint so I'd recommend this blush for a fun night out.

Pinks/Berries:

Cargo Blush in Amalfi (available February 2010 in CVS and select indy boutiques): I was a Cargo blush virgin until recently! After I received a sample of Amalfi, I immediately knew why Cargo's blush was a cult classic. First of all, the texture applies like butter and is so pigmented. The jumbo size and the amount of colour pay-off is so worth the price!

Amalfi is a shimmering hot pink which my cheeks are just loving! If you're looking for a neutral pink then this is not your shade. Amalfi is like a baby doll pink with some attitude. For a girly flush, apply on the apples of the cheek but for something more sophisticated apply Amalfi over a bronzer - gorgeous!

Elizabeth Arden Ceramide Cream Blush in Plum: I was completely shocked at how much I would love this blush! I received a sample back in November and its been in heavy rotation ever since. These ultra creamy oil-free blushes not only give you a healthy glow but nourishes your skin with anti-oxidants and anti-aging properties at the same time.

The plum shade is a sophisticated version of a girly flush. When I apply this shade, my skin instantly looks brighter (love using this when I've had a late night). They are super blendable and long-lasting. It doesn't say you can apply on your lips but I do anyways. My lips look plump and soft and it doesn't dry out them out either.

100% Pure Strawberry Gel Cheek Tint: 100% natural, 100% vegan and gluten-free. This is the philosophy behind the all natural vegan line 100% Pure. The colour is derived from antioxidant and vitamin rich fruit.

Upon opening this blush you'll want to squirt it into your mouth but resist the urge! The yummy strawberry scent is delicious and the strawberry-pink shade is even better! The gel applies sheer so you won't over do it but you can definitely layer for more pop. And since it's all natural why not swipe some onto your lips!

Vapour Organic Beauty Aura Multi-Use Blush in Crush 201:  Vapour Organic Beauty is a certified organic line that uses organic mineral pigments to colour their products. Aura Multi-Use Blush can be used on the cheeks, eyes and lips - big fans of multi-tasking products at Makeup Junkie!

Crush is a soft petal pink that reminds me of the first bloom of spring. It applies sheer on the first application but becomes a brighter pink after 2 more applications. The dewy finish was fresh and natural. Love the on-the-go and travel-friendly packaging, perfect for when you're in a rush.

What blushes are you excited to swipe on your cheeks for Spring?

More SAG Awards Red Carpet Favourites

Marion Cotillard looked stunning from her finger-waved side-swept bun to her draped one shoulder white embellished cocktail dress with floral applique detail by Elie Saab.

According to celebrity stylist, Rachel Zoe, "white is the new black". Kate Hudson knows how to rock a whole lot of back cleavage - after seeing her back I need to work out my back! She was elegant with a definite sexy edge.

I love Lea Michele on Glee! There was nothing school-girl about her gorgeous look at the SAG Awards. I thought this colour on her was absolutely fabulous and her hair and makeup was gorgeous!

Diane Krueger looked exquisite in this fab number by designer, Jason Wu. The dress fit her like a glove. I don't usually like mustard-gold shades but on her porcelain skin it totally worked. The simple but glamorous up-do, neutral face, and pop of red on the lip were the perfect compliment.

Christina Applegate's red carpet look is a far cry from her days as Kelly Bundy! I thought she looked soft and glowing, almost ethereal looking.

Who were your SAG red carpet favourites?

Get the Look: Drew Barrymore Pretties Up the SAG Awards

Drew Barrymore's winning look at the SAG Awards complimented her win for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Television Movie or Miniseries! I adored her look from head to toe.

Get the Look:

The inspiration behind her glamorous beauty look was took a cue from the 60's Brigitte Bardot and Sharon Tate. For the makeup, Debra Ferullo, celebrity makeup artist, didn’t want to match the blue color in her dress, but rather accentuate Drew’s natural features with warm undertones.

Face:
Debra  prepped the skin with a moisturizer and then used COVERGIRL Clean Liquid Makeup for normal skin followed by a highlighter and COVERGIRL Simply Ageless Sculpting Blush in Plush Peach on the cheeks.

Eyes:
For Drew’s 60’s inspired colorful smoky eye, Debra applied COVERGIRL Smoky ShadowBlast in Bronze Fire, using the darker shade on the lid and the taupe shade in the eye crease as well as underneath the eye. She then applied a dot of the silver shade in COVERGIRL Smoky ShadowBlast in Silver Sky to the inner corner of Drew’s eye to make it pop, followed by a thin line of white eyeliner on the inner bottom eye.

She finished the eye with a heavy coat of DiorShow Blackout Mascara to the top and bottom lashes for definition.

Lips:
On Drew’s lips, Debra applied DiorAddict lipcolor in Beige Negligee #223, followed by DiorAddict Ultra Gloss in Jersey Pink #157 for a washed peach lip with a shiny finish.

My New Do!

I go through these phases where I think I'm finally comfortable with my hair but then have those days when I want a complete change. I've had bangs before but let them grow out over the past year and finally made the plunge to get them back! And after seeing Nicole Richie's sexy new do I wanted them even more.

I went to visit my ladies over at Lift Beauty Boutique and realized it had been 8 months since my stylist, Emily, had worked her magic on me! She always knows exactly what I want without me having to say anything. If you haven't visited Lift before I suggest you swing by - they always have a lot of promos going on. Check out my feature on Lift Beauty Boutique here. They also have their own cosmetic line, Lift Cosmetics, and relaunching the line this March so stay tuned!

Side-swept

Alright, here is the reveal! I can't wait to try the style with a slightly messy wave. I didn't want to go with a straight across bang so we did a shattered bang that I could wear to the side and slightly messy all across.

Shattered all-across

Like the new do? Be kind! ;)

UPDATE: I forgot to mention I got rid of the awful caramel highlights in my hair and went back to good ol' black brown. :)

Hair Inspiration?

I'm having a slight girl crush on style mogul and fashion icon, Nicole Richie. I've always been a fan of her effortless boho chic style (anticipating her new clothing line Winter Kate) and already a fan of her jewelry line, House of Harlow.

I'm getting my hair done tomorrow at the fabulous Lift Beauty Boutique in Yorkville and came across this photo of Nicole on the up-coming March cover of Fashion Magazine. I am loving the darker hair on her and the shattered bangs - the look is very sultry/sexy.

I haven't had bangs in a while and itching for a new look. What do you think? Should I go for it???

Helping Haiti: Do Your Part

Even in the midst of beauty products we can still find time to somehow help the people suffering in Haiti. I came across this post by Janine Falcon over at beautygeeks about helping Haiti. She inspired me to add a banner to Makeup Junkie from The Humanitarian Coalition website - the Canadian Government will match donations made through this site.

Another cool way to donate that I just found out tonight is donating your Shoppers Drug Mart Optimum points! They have a variety of charities to choose from. I donated all mine to Haiti of course. Check it out here.

For more information or to donate click on the banner to the right. You'll feel good knowing you did your part!

Golden Globe Beauties

Red carpet beauty and fashion is my favourite part of award shows (although I thought Ricky Gervais was hilarious) - everything else is kind of a yawn. There wasn't really anyone that stood out as a winner to me but there was definitely a lot of pretty faces and dresses.

Beauty expert and celebrity makeup artist, AJ Crimson, dishes on his favourite beauties of the night along with tips on how to achieve their flawless looks!

Julianna Margulies:

Julianna wins top spot with AJ! Natural and fresh skin, slightly defined corners of the eye make a beautiful doe eye shape in soft taupe and gold accentuated corner lashes with a subtle cheek rose color

To get the look use water based foundation to get a clean barely-there application.  On the outer corner of the eye, slightly define at the lash line into the crease. Use a soft brown shadow such as #98 by Makeup Forever or Taupe by MAC. Define the lash line with aqua black waterproof cream eyeliner, adding faux lashes on the outer corners and coat with SmashBox DNA LASH mascara.

Zoe Saldana:

Deep liner! Rim the entire eye with SMOLDER eye kohl by MAC, soften and set to prevent edges from running with Nars eye shadow in Sofia.

Kate Hudson:

I loved Kate Hudson's look. She looked stunning and classic. It was all about bronze cheek and nude lip this Spring.

To Achieve the look try SmashBox photo finish lipstick in MAGNIFICENT with Honesty by Kissable Couture on top for shine. We loved the hair softly pulled back and with a Guerlain Bronzer (Sephora.com) for the cheeks.

Anna Kendrick:

New comer - looked stunning with a soft smoky gray eye and heavy liner.

Achieve the look with lightly applied Lili Marlene cream shadow by Nars all over the lid into the crease. Set with a light sweep of #31 shadow by Makeup Forever.  Finish the look with Boot black eyeliner by MAC and Covergirl Lash blast Mascara!

Kristen Bell

The Peach cheek. Nothing says spring like full blushy cheeks. Try Style by MAC or for a rosy peach or #153 by Makeup Forever.

Mo'Nique:

Oh so radiant.  Very beautiful defined doe eye, bronze golden skin, soft brown eye. This look was just great placement.

To achieve this look try Exposed lip gloss by Kissable Couture #129 and soft brown eye shadow by Makeup Forever.

Christina Hendricks:

Rosy cheek, classic Red lips, black liner with heavy mascara. Try Amour by Nars Shu Umera eye pen in black with DIORShow mascara.Try adding some faux lashes for added drama! VERY MAD MEN!

My faves:

Loved AJ's choices but here are a couple of others to add to the list!

Drew Barrymore:

I've loved Drew Barrymore since I was a kid. She has this fresh youthfulness about her and her look at the Golden Globes was exactly that. The dress wasn't my favourite - the shoulder/waist tinsel decoration kind of threw me off but she still managed to land her first Golden Globe!

Meryl Streep:

Meryl Streep can do no wrong. She is one of my absolute favourite actresses and always carries herself with such grace and elegance. Did anyone get a good look at her skin? Fabulous! Glowing and radiant.

Who were your favourite beauties at the Golden Globes this year?
