I'm soooo excited to announce that all my amazing makeup junkie readers will receive a 25% discount at Face Atelier, the Official Makeup Sponsor of Madonna's Confessions Tour! If you read my site then you know that I am a huge fan of Face Atelier makeup especially their foundation and concealers. I started using their line because it was so sought after in the makeup artist community and makeup enthusiasts everywhere. Why are they so popular? Because their products contain silicone. It makes the skin feel like silk, water-binding, and has a skin-conditioning agent that helps improve the appearance of the skin. I love many other products from Face Atelier including their Transforming Gel, Lip Lock, lipsticks, Lip Glazes, eye shadows (which are also refills), and blushes.

All you have to do to get the 25% discount is visit www.faceatelier.com and at checkout enter the discount code 'makeupjunkie' (all one word). The offer is valid from now until December 31st! FINALLY - My Interview With Michael DeVellis of The Powder Group!

Michael DeVellis Interview

I know this is now 2 weeks + late and I apologize immensely!! It's my fault for thinking that it would be easy to edit it in an audio program (Logic Pro for those of you that are familiar or are AV nerds! lol). I finally was able to work out the kinks (with the help of my hubby) and finished the final edit. I thought you guys would appreciate hearing Michael DeVellis, founder of The Powder Group, speak than me translating it in a long blog especially since he's just so interesting to listen to. I interviewed him at The Canadian Makeup Show the weekend of November 10 and 11. His interview is full of background info of how the makeup scene was 10 years ago and where it is now and how The Powder Group has helped shape the makeup artist community.

So, just to rant a little more about my editing project, I was disappointed to find out that part of my interview was lost because I think my recorder ran out of space! I thought I had been recording but I was not even though what did get recorded was 52 minutes long! Can you imagine how long it actually was?? I'm really bummed about that. But what I did manage to capture was still full of insightful information and inspiration! You'll have to excuse my girly giggles and a lot of "yahs". I kind of forgot I was interviewing him and felt like we were just casually chatting. He's just so intriguing to listen to. I hope you enjoy listening to the interview as much as I enjoyed interviewing him. I saw Michael again at Industry Cosmetics this past Sunday for Billy B.'s seminar. I can't wait to post about the awesome makeup tips Billy gave! So stay tuned for that as well! Thank you Michael for the amazing interview and sorry for the lateness!

Beauty News: Pink Beauty Does Timeless Elegance For The Holidays!

Pink Beauty Cosmetics is THE go-to cosmetics line for glamour girls who appreciate old Hollywood elegance in a modern twist. Holiday 2007 is all about "Timeless Elegance" at Pink Beauty and who doesn't want to look timeless and elegant? Women everywhere can achieve that classic 1940's glam look with this holiday collection. April Jacob, founder of Pink Beauty, has put together seven easy-to-apply must-have products for the glamour-girl-on-the-go!

1. Sweet Nothings Eye Splendor Shadow – Velvet (nude) Cdn$23;
2. Worshiped – Eye Splendor Shadow – Velvet (tan) Cdn$23;
3. Devoted - Eye Splendor Shadow – Velvet (brown black) Cdn$23;
4. Lavish Lash Extravagance Mascara (black) Cdn$25;
5. Longing For Soft Flush Powder Blusher (rose) Cdn$23;
6. Beatrice Luscious Lip Sheer Lipstick (red brown) Cdn$27; and
7. Dearest Glamour Glaze Gloss (coppery pink) Cdn$21.

April Jacobs, a professional makeup artist for over 10 years in the film, tv, beauty, and fashion industry, outlines seven simple steps to achieve "timeless elegance".

1. Sweep Sweet Nothings over entire eye, from lash line to brow. This creates a
canvas and ensures the next shadow application will blend out subtly. Sweet
Nothings is also an instant highlight for the brow bone.
2. Brush Worshiped on the lid with a sweeping motion and blend into the crease.
3. Use a damp eyeliner brush to apply Devoted along the upper lash line only. This
proves to be much easier then using liquid eyeliner, yet the same definition is
achieved with minimal time and effort.
4. Add Lavish mascara to the base of lash and use a zig-zag motion to get mascara
from root to tip. For maximum glamour, apply three to five coats.
5. Use a soft fluffy blush brush, and apply Longing For to the apples of the cheeks,
blending outward to the hairline. This imparts a sheer, soft and subtle diffusion
of colour on the cheeks.
6. Apply Beatrice—the perfect luscious lip sheer shade of sophisticated red to
complement any skin tone. Use a lip brush starting in the center of lips and
working outwards.
7. Top off with Dearest, the ideal lip gloss for added fullness and enticing shine.

"Timeless elegance" is not only the perfect look for the holidays, but for anytime of the year. These 7 products are definite must-haves for every woman-on-the-go that wants a little glamour without all the fuss. I can tell you firsthand that Pink Beauty products are so easy to use and buildable. Most of the products don't require a brush! So, go for a classic look this holiday that will look great in pictures year after year! Stay tuned for my interview with April Jacob! Happy shopping!

Next On Makeup Junkie

The last few days have been a bit busy and I have not had a chance to post my interview with April Jacob and Michael DeVellis of The Powder Group from 2 weeks ago! I apologize for the delays but things just come up unexpectedly! I've been working on transfering my interview with Michael to an audio clip but have been trying to work out some kinks (damn technology!). I probably could have transcribed it already and posted it but I've gotten this far and I'm not giving up! You'll love my interview with April because she's just such a bubbly personality and so passionate about her makeup line Pink Beauty Cosmetics. It's full of great beauty tips that'll make your life easier!

Tomorrow, November 25th, is also the Billy B. seminar I've been waiting for since July! I am so excited to finally meet the makeup genius in person! Michael will also be doing an encore seminar from The Canadian Makeup Show about Portfolio Building and Marketing Your Career. Both seminars are at Industry Cosmetics in Toronto. Lots to look forward to! I hope all my American makeup junkies had a wonderful Thanksgiving!

Beauty Review: Pink Beauty Day 5

Day 5 of Pink Beauty has arrived which means this is the last day of Pink Beauty Week! I'm a little sad because I've been having so much fun playing with the products and coming up with different looks. Today's look was inspired by beautiful sunsets in the early summer months before it gets all muggy and humid. Sunsets always have a gorgeous gradient colour of burnt oranges, golds, and peachy-pinks. I did a day look and a night look using the main products and adding extras to change the looks. First up is what I call sweet sunset which is definitely wearable for day. Here are the products I used and how I achieved the look.

Sweet Sunset Look:
If you're looking for ways to wear colour during the day without over doing it, try this look out. It's all about adding subtle hints of colour to enhance your natural beauty. On my eyes, I used Eye Splendor Shadow in Worshiped (yes, I'm using it again!), a neutral beige, as my base and on the bottom lash line. I added Eye Splendor Shadow in La-Di-Da, a gorgeous amber orange, to the outer corner of the eyes. This shadow has a really nice sheer finish so if you're not used to colour I suggest starting out light and building on top of it until you are comfortable with the colour. I used a blending brush to make sure the colours were blended well together and there were no harsh lines. Even though I had a bit of colour on the eyes, I still wanted a subtle pop of colour on the cheeks. I dabbed on Cream Rouge Radiance in Enchant, a peachy-pink shade, to the apples of the cheeks. To sweeten the look, I applied Luscious Lipshimmer Lipstick in Maribeth, a lovely burnt orange with gold flecks and swiped on a little of Glamour Glaze Lip Gloss in Dearest, an opalescent pinky-coppery gloss, to the center of the lips.

Sultry Sunset Look:
The second look I call Sultry Sunset. I've always noticed that when the sun is almost done setting the colours go a hazy burnt orange. To bring the day look into night I used the same main products but added a dark brown liner, opted for a nude lip, added some shimmer, and darkened my eye shadow and blush. I added more of the La-di-da shadow to the crease area and applied it to the bottom lash line. I smudged a dark brown liner to my top and bottom lash line. I also added a shimmery gold shadow to the inner corners of the eyes. I swiped on another coat of mascara to add on to the drama. On the cheeks, I added a bit more of Enchant to deepen the colour and give my cheekbones some definition. I added a shimmery highlighter to my cheekbones. To balance the smoky eye, I applied Luscious Lip Sheer Lipstick in Mabel (not shown in picture but you can check out Day 1 to see the colour), a sheer nude. I also applied Dearest gloss on top to give me a shiny pout.

The result:
I just love how you can use the same products to achieve 2 totally different looks. La-di-da eye shadow is such a gorgeous amber shade and would especially look great on darker skin tones. If you have fair skin, you can still get away with this shade but in a lighter application. If you have baby blues, this shade will brighten and enhance your eye colour. Enchant cream blush is such a pretty shade and would look great on anyone. If you're tired of pink, then this peachy-pink shade is a great alternative. It's a little more womanly and little less girly. I also love using peachy shades on darker skin tones to brighten up the complexion. My next favourite lip product has to be Maribeth lipstick. It has the same effect as Elsie, the sheer red lipstick, because it perks up any complexion. This is great for any skin tone as well. I actually have similar shades from a few other brands - it's my staple colour especially during the summer months. Pink Beauty's version is my favourite hands down because it's sooo moisturizing! Dearest gloss is such a sweet treat because it looks amazing on its own and goes great over any lipstick. I love the two-tone effect it has. Mabel lipstick is my favourite nude lipstick and doesn't have a chalky effect like some I've tried. The gold shimmer gives it some dimension and doesn't look flat on the lips.

Well, today ends my week of Pink Beauty!! I hope you enjoyed the looks as much as I enjoyed creating them. Thank you for all your great feedback! It makes doing this all the more enjoyable. Pink Beauty Cosmetics is a Canadian line that is sold at various Holt Renfrew locations across Canada. If you get a chance to pop in, don't forget to stop by the Pink Beauty counter for a sweet dose of glamour and fun! Once you try the products, I guarantee you'll be hooked! I'm very excited to be meeting with April Jacob, the creator of Pink Beauty Cosmetics, tomorrow so stay tuned for my interview with her! Happy shopping!

Pink Beauty Day 5 Will Have To Wait!

Sorry guys, Pink Beauty Day 5 won't be posted until tomorrow. Today was just a busy pmsing day and I just wasn't in the mood to get all prettied up. Although I did take my son to the park and dabbed on Captivate Cream Radiance Rouge blush and Luscious Lip Sheer Lipstick in Elsie to perk me up hehe. I just love these 2 products! But I will not disappoint tomorrow! I'll be doing a day and night look so stay tuned!

Beauty Review: Pink Beauty Day 4

Pink Beauty Day 4 was a preview of the holiday season to come with Santa Clause and friends bringing smiles to kids both young and old! I was in a festive mood which called for bright lips and shimmery skin. I also wanted a bit of rouge on the cheeks to give that "just pinched" youthful glow we so long for as you get older. I created a day look and a night look using 3 main products and adding a couple extras to change it up. These are two of my favourite looks because it just tends to make you look radiant and glamourous without putting a whole lot on. First up is the day look. Here are the products I used and how I achieved the look.

The Day Look:
Since I was adding a bright pop of colour on the cheeks and lips, I wanted to keep the eyes subtle with a hint of shimmer. To wake up my very tired eyes, I decided to use Eye Splendor Eye Shadow in Worshiped, a neutral beige, all over the eyes. As I mentioned in my previous posts, I've been using this shadow everyday as a base or on it's own because it's such a great neutral. I then added a white shadow that has a subtle sheen to it, in the inner corner of the eyes and the bottom lash line. For the day, I wanted to keep the shimmer to a minimum. I also lined the inner lash line with a creamy beige eye pencil to whiten up my whites to make them look brighter (if you have fairer skin use a white pencil). I added 2-3 coats of mascara to plump up those lashes (against a subtle eye long, full lashes are a must!). To give me that youthful flush I applied Cream Radiance Rouge in Captivate, a rich berry-red shade, to the apples of my cheeks (set your makeup with powder after you've applied cream blush. Cream blushes blend better on non-powdered skin.). To finish the look, I applied Luscious Lip Sheer Lipstick in Elsie, a gorgeous sheer brick red, to my lips.

The Night Look:

Changing this look from day to night is easy and only needs a couple of products: shimmer and black liquid liner. I added a shimmery metallic shadow over top of my existing shadow in a soft taupe shade. I also added some to the bottom lash line. I then winged out black liquid liner to give me that cat eye effect. I applied a few more coats of mascara. I also applied an iridescent highlighting cream in a champagne shade to the cheekbones to give a luminous glow. Everything after that was easy. I added more of the Cream Radiance Rouge in Captivate to the cheeks to deepen the colour. I also deepened the lips by adding Captivate and then applied the Luscious Lip Sheer in Elsie, over top a few times. And voila - go from day to night in a few easy steps!

The result:
I LOVE the lip sheer Elsie and I think the cream blush in Captivate is just beautiful! They just complimented each other so well. Because I heart these two products so much I just had to do 2 looks! Elsie is the perfect red for just about any skin tone because it is so sheer that you can't go wrong. If you've been afraid to wear red especially during the day, Elsie is absolutely wonderful! For the day, I applied it once and it gave me a subtle hint of red that is so wearable. For the evening, I applied it a few times until I reached my desired colour of red. I've said this before, but I just love how buildable all the products are. The lipstick is also super moisturizing! I didn't need to add any lip balm to my chronically dry lips. Elsie is my new fave lip colour for all year round (its nestled itself nicely into my makeup bag)! It brightens you up and adds nice colour to the skin. Captivate cream blush gives you a pop of colour without looking overdone. If bright cheeks and lips are too much for you, then opt for a more neutral blush or a bronzer. But the two really do go nicely together. I'm not really sure if I should have used the cream blush on my lips but I did and it didn't dry out my lips or give me a reaction. :) Whenever I'm feeling down or tired, this look always gives me a pick-me-up-perk-me-up. This will definitely be my holiday look! Stay tuned for my last day of Pink Beauty tomorrow but the fun will not be over because I'll be featuring my interview with April Jacob later on this week! Happy shopping!

Pink Beauty Day 4 On Hold!

I apologize for not posting Day 4 of Pink Beauty, but I am just exhausted from the Santa Clause parade today which was pure madness! And after that, we had dinner with family and I'm sure you know how long those can go (it was good eatin' though!). I will for sure be posting Day 4 tomorrow and I can't wait to tell you about my new favourite lipstick from Pink Beauty called Elsie (which was named after the creator's grandmother! love it!)! Thank you to everyone that has been giving me great feedback on Pink Beauty and my site! I love hearing from the readers because it means so much that you find my info interesting and useful! Thanks guys! And just to give you a heads up I'll be meeting with April Jacob, creator of Pink Beauty, for a one-on-one interview so stay tuned! Oh, and I apologize for the delay in posting my wonderful interview with Michael DeVellis of The Powder Group! I'm in the process of making an audio clip that you can listen in on. It's much more interesting to hear him speak than me writing about it! So stay tuned for that as well!

Beauty Reviews: Pink Beauty Day 3

This was the best picture I could come up with!
Day 3 of Pink Beauty was a nice relaxing day outing with my son and husband. I wanted a natural but girly look today. I decided on doing a neutral eye and added black liquid liner winged out a bit to give it that girly-feminine quality. I concentrated more colour on the cheeks and left my lips a nice soft neutral. This is definitely a look you can wear everyday and to change it up just add a darker lip colour to spice it up for the evening. Here is how I achieved the looks and the products I used.

The look:
To achieve that natural look you still have to put a bit of effort into it. Your goal is to even out your skin tone without over powdering or over concealing. You want your skin to look luminous and not shiny. For the eyes, I applied Eye Splendor Eye Shadow in Worshiped, an almost matte neutral beige, all over from lash line to brow bone. I've used this colour as a base for the past 2 days because it's such a great neutral! To make my eye go from bland to glam, I added a black liquid liner to the top lash line only applying it from the center of the eye to the outer corner. Since it was still day time, I winged it out and up just a bit to give it that flirtiness without looking over done. To make my cheeks look dewy and fresh, I applied Cream Radiance Rouge in Delight, a rosy-pink, to the apples of my cheeks ( I also used this on my cousin for Day 1). For those of you that have naturally rosy cheeks, this colour was specifically designed for women with redness because it doesn't add more red to the skin. The base is more browny than red. To finish off the look, I swiped on Lip Scintillate Lip Gloss in Sashay (which was named after the creator's husband Sasha! aww), a sheer plumy-brown.

The result:
The look was fresh and girly just like I wanted. I still wanted to look polished but in a natural way. The cream blushes are fantastic because they smell like roses and they dry to a powder finish. It makes my skin look luminous without looking oily and doesn't stick to my hair like some that I have tried. I also love how buildable the blushes are. I kept applying until I reached my desired look. The Lip Scintillate Lip Glosses feel wonderful on and has a thicker finish than the Glamour Glaze Lip Gloss and is not sticky at all. The plumy-brown hue of Sashay went on sheer and is a perfect neutral for everyday. And did I mention how yummy all the glosses smell?? Stay tuned for Day 4 of Pink Beauty where I'll be waiting on the side lines at the Santa Claus parade (that's one of the best things about having kids - you get to be a kid again!) Happy shopping!

Beauty Review: Pink Beauty Day 2

Are you ready for Day 2 of Pink Beauty? When I looked out the window today and saw the cloudy boring sky, I decided I wanted to do a look that would evoke the bright colourful hues of spring time. I wanted to add a bit of colour to each area of the face without looking overdone and with Pink Beauty's sheer textures it's hard to look overdone. I decided on a sheer wash of colour on the eyes, a healthy pop of colour on the cheeks, and a bright pinky pout. The model I used was myself which is not nearly as fun as using someone else. But hopefully I'll have some friends that will pop by that I can make over?? Alright, here are the products I used to achieve this look.

The look:
April Jacob, makeup artist and the wonderful creator behind this oh-so-chic line, told me that the shadows could be used wet for more intensity. Using the shadow dry, you get a nice wash of colour but dampen your brush with a bit of water and the colour is intensified. As my base, I swept Eye Splendor Shadow in Worshiped, a soft neutral beige with a velvet finish, all over the eye. On the lid and the bottom lash line, I applied Primp, a sheer seafoam shade with a satin finish. I then took my angled brush and lined the bottom lash line with Belle, a periwinkle blue. I added a bit of black liner to the inner lash line for a little definition. On the cheeks, I swept Soft Flush Powder Blush in Object of Affection, a peachy-pink powder, on the apples of my cheeks. For a nice pop of colour, I applied Luscious Lipshimmer Lipstick in Vi Vi, a shimmery berry-pink. To finish the look, I applied Glamour Glaze Lip Gloss in Sugar Pie, a sheer flamingo pink, to the center of the lips.

The result:
I loved playing around with the colours and seeing the range of sheerness and opacity each product had. Worshiped is such a great neutral beige and can be worn alone with some liquid liner for an understated glam look. I loved the soft seafoam colour of Primp! When I applied it dry it was just a whisper of colour which is perfect for a day look. And when I applied it wet, it changed to a greeny-blue metallic shade as seen in the picture above. Belle is a great colour because it would look great on just about anyone. I used this periwinkle blue on my cousin yesterday which was softer because it was applied dry. Today I applied it wet to my lash line and it just gave the perfect amount of colour! I didn't want my eyes to be overdone but adding it just to the lash line really made a difference. I am in love with the Object of Affection blush! It is my new fave blush and is the perfect colour when you need a pick me up. The blush gives the skin a really nice sheen - not a shimmer which I prefer. My 2 fave products had to be the Vi Vi lipstick and the Sugar Pie Gloss. When I applied Vi Vi once, the berry-pink shade was soft and sheer. I applied it a few more times and the result was a bright beautiful rich berry-pink. Sugar Pie gloss on it's own looks like a bright pink but goes on sheer and smells soo yummy! When I applied it to the center of my lips, it created a really nice highlight. This colour is gorgeous when you want a pop of colour and would look great against bronzy skin. My look today was a nice change from the nude lips and charcoal grey eyes of fall. I think I achieved my oasis of a colourful springtime! Happy shopping!

Beauty Review: Pink Beauty Day 1

Photo is unretouched. That's how good Sarah's skin is!

Today is the first day of my 5 Days Of Pink Beauty! Since my cousin, Sarah (who is also a new yummy-mummy to her beautiful 1 month old Rachel Jade), was visiting me I thought I'd spring a mini-makeover on her! My cousin is a natural beauty and it's evident especially since she looks amazing after giving birth just one month ago! I know my first month after having my son I felt and looked like blah and I wanted to glam Sarah up since she won't have the time to do it. Here are the products I used and how I achieved her new-mom-glam look!

The look:
I evened out her skin tone with foundation and powder. I then prepped her eyes with a primer before putting on the shadows. I used Eye Splendor Shadow in Trinket, a pale iridescent satin lilac shade, all over her lid. I then added Belle, a soft irridescent blue, from the middle of her crease to the outer crease. I lined her her top and bottom lash line with a dark grey shadow and smudged a little into her outer crease to give some definition. A swiped on some black mascara and for added drama added a pair of fake lashes. I used my contour powder blush brush to apply the Cream Radiance Rouge in Delight, a rosy pink, to the apples of her cheeks to give her that natural flush. I added a highlighting cream to the cheekbones and temple for a luminous glow. On the lips, I used Luscious Lip Sheer Lipstick in Mabel, a soft peachy-gold, and applied Rosealine, a coppery-cocoa brown, over top. To emphasize her full lips, I added Glamour Glaze Lip Gloss in Dearest, an opalescent peachy-pink.

The result:
Sarah looked radiant, fresh, and totally glam! She loved everything I used on her. The shadow colours on her eyes were so pretty and she loved how moisturized her lips felt (and we didn't even use a lip balm!). She also loved the colour of the blush and said the makeup felt really good on. The lip products had a nice sweet smell to them and even the blush smelled of roses! The pigment in the shadows were rich and beautiful and the textures blended smoothly onto the skin. The blush didn't feel sticky like some other cream blushes and also blended really easily. The lipsticks have a nice sheer finish and give the perfect amount of colour. My cousin wasn't sure about Rosealine at first and was surprised at how soft it went on. She's also not a fan of sticky, goopy gloss and loved the texture of Glamour Glaze. I'd say Pink Beauty Day 1 was a success! Stay tuned for Day 2! Happy shopping!

Beauty News: 5 Days Of Pink Beauty!

Tomorrow, November 15, I will begin my 5 Days Of Pink Beauty! I just received some fabulous products that have me tickled pink and I can't wait to share them with you. For 5 days I will feature a different look for each day with the products I used and how I achieved the look. Just when I think I've fallen in love with one product there's another one (or 2 or 3) making their way into my heart!

If you're not familiar with Pink Beauty Cosmetics it is a Canadian brand created by Canadian makeup artist April Jacob. Pink Beauty is "modern day sophistication meets Old Hollywood glamour" (one of my favourite era's!). This ultra-feminine, ultra playful brand is a perfect blend of classic sophistication and glam girl-on-the-go. The packaging is of course pink and is beautifully done. The colours and textures fantastic and names like "Elsie" (lipstick named after the creator's grandmother...aww), Mabel, and Sweet Pea (50% of it's proceeds went to Breast Cancer Awareness back in October) are reminiscent of Old Hollywood times.

Stay tuned for my 5 looks featuring Pink Beauty products! For more info on Pink Beauty and where to buy visit www.pinkbeautycosmetics.com. Happy shopping!

Beauty Review: Getting Beautiful With Smashbox!

Smashbox Cosmetics has been around for a while now and it wasn't until this year that I started using their products. I had always heard great things about many of their products but never had the interest to try them out. It wasn't until Shoppers Drug Mart started carrying the high-end line that I started buying from Smashbox. The line just seemed more appealing and interesting in a drugstore setting. My first purchases were their Lip Enhancing Glosses in Beauty (pinky-melon true colour) and Pixel (creamy nude true colour). And well, it didn't end there! All of the Smashbox products that I own now take up most of the room in my main makeup bag!

1. Lip Enhancing Gloss in Beauty and Pixel: Winner of Allure's Best of Beauty Editor's Choice Award! This line comes in 3 different textures: sheer, true colour, and full colour. The colours are just beautiful and the textures are smooth and non-tacky. My lips always feel super moisturized. They're in the top 2 of my fave glosses. I love the pinky-melon colour of Beauty. It's a really fresh pink and looks especially great against bronzy skin. Pixel is a great colour any time of the year. It's a great nude that can be worn with a fresh face or paired with a sultry set of eyes.

2. Blush: I was looking for a matte neutral in a rosey-beige tone and picked up Golden Beige which I later learned was being discontinued! It's such a pretty colour and gives the face a natural flush. The downside to it beside it being discontinued is that by the end of the day the colour was gone. I'd look at myself in pictures and gringe at how pale I was! But because I love the colour I've made it work for me by layering it with my bronzer for long-lasting colour. I guess sometimes you have to compromise and make it work??

3. Photo Op Under Eye Brightner: I've been lusting after YSL's Touche Eclat Under Eye Concealer for some time but I just can't justify spending over $50 on one product right now. Smashbox's version doesn't have everything I'm looking for but amazingly works very well! I love using this product before I apply my concealer because it just makes the under eye area look brighter and luminous. It's packed with vitamins and ingredients that are extra nurishing for the eyes. The texture is light and smooth. You can also apply it in the inner corner of the eyes and the brow bone to wake those tired eyes up. If you're circles don't quite look like black eyes, you can get away with wearing it on its own. It's not a huge container but a little goes a long way. The packaging is portable so you can carry it with you any time you need a refresher.

4. Photo Finish Foundation Primer: This product has won so many beauty awards and rightfully so! I received a sample of it and it's probably the top primers I've ever used. The skin just feels so smooth and foundation just glides on perfectly. It covered up my fine lines and my skin looked radiant. My foundation also lasted all day. This is definitely next on my list of wants/needs!

If you've tried any of these products or have tried other ones let me know! Happy shopping!

Beauty Review: Winter Ready Hands With Gloves In A Bottle!

Gloves In A Bottle (such a clever name because it really does act like gloves!) is not only great for the dry winter season but anytime of the year especially if you suffer from chronically dry hands. It is a shielding lotion that will cure all your dry-cracked-skin woes away. What is a shielding lotion? It is a lotion that rapidly absorbs into, and bonds with, the outer layer of the skin that creates a protective layer while retaining moisture on the inside. I use it from time to time when my hands get really dry and it cures it right up especially those cracked areas around the nails. The texture is light and non-greasy and does not wash off (and when you have kids you're always washing your hands!). If you're not a fan of scented products this lotion is fragrance free. Another great thing about this is that you only have to reapply every 4 hours or so. Most regular lotions only temporarily alleviate dry skin, but a shielding lotion repairs lost moisture and over time helps build the production of moisture back to your skin. I'm addicted to my yummy smelling lotions so I like to use both together. This way I have a yummy scent plus moisturized hands that lasts for a long time! An 8 ounce bottle is $12.95 each - not bad for something that will last you a long time!

Makeup Artist Corner

This post is for the makeup artist just starting out or a veteran needing a refresher. Over the past weekend I attended Michael DeVellis' seminar Portfolio Building and Marketing Your Career at The Canadian Makeup Show. If you've ever been to any of The Powder Group seminars and heard Michael speak then you know how amazing, funny, and inspiring his seminar's are. What you get from these seminars are real experiences and honest advice. Here is what I took away from the seminar that will change your career and life forever!

Marketing Your Career:

1. Your full name is your brand. You are selling yourself and your work so don't just use part of your name. Michael hit on this point a lot. It makes sense right?

2. Making relationships are important and so are maintaining them. Everyone you meet will somehow change your career or your life.

3. When you meet someone for the first time always find a way to talk about what you do. You never know who you're talking to!

4. If you're shy (I'll admit - I can be like this sometimes!), it is up to you to get out there and build connections. No one will know your work or how talented you are if you're at home practicing on your sister or friend (but thank god for them!). It is up to you to familiarize yourself with all the resources available to you like seminars and workshops, agencies, photographers, blogs (Michael was so awesome to give my blog and Ellen's Lipstick, Powder, 'n Paint some love during his seminar!), anything and everything that has to do with your career.

5. 3 things your business card should have:
  • your full name and what you do (i.e. if you only specialize in sfx or bridal makeup state that "sfx makeup artist" or "bridal makeup artist"). Also, make sure it's big enough to read (Michael pointed out that my name is too small to read on my card! I don't know why I didn't notice this before??)
  • a consistent style: make a style that is true to you and your work. Be consistent with your colour choices, fonts, etc.
  • your contact info: leave out extra details like "email", "phone number", or "http://www.". It's pretty self-explanatory. ;)
Portfolio:

1. You portfolio should tell a story and it should say most importantly that you're an amazing artist!

2. The only person that matters is the photographer. If you want amazing images you might have to pay a little money (unless you are fortunate to work with an amazing photographer who will give you free prints for your time also known as TFP's). You can do beautiful makeup and a bad photographer will make it look bad. I've always tried to find photographers who's work I admire or have the same style as I do. So, do your research!

3. Narrow down your portfolio to your best pictures. Less than 10 pictures is not a portfolio. If you have less than 10 pictures, always let the client or the person you're working with know that you are building your portfolio.

4. Not sure what images to include in your portfolio? Ask yourself 3 questions about each image:
  • Am I proud of this image?
  • Does it represent my best work at this moment in my career?
  • Would I hire me based on this image?
Michael's seminar had everyone nodding their heads and probably some if not all had an epiphany about their career! I kid you not! It was too bad he ran out of time because it felt like we were just getting started. But don't worry! Michael will be back at Industry Cosmetics for Billy B.'s seminar (which I'm soo excited for!) on November 25th from 6-8 pm discussing this same topics! So, if you haven't signed up yet get to it! The seminar fee for Michael is $65 (CAD). If you can't make it, you can always check out thepowdergroup.com for upcoming seminars and shows in an area closes to you (you may have to get on a plane but it will be so worth it!). If you're going to Billy's and Michael's seminars let me know! If I don't know you already, I'd love to meet you! My interview with Michael will be posted this week so be on the look out!

Beauty Review: Get Winter Ready Skin With Bobe!

Bobe you ask? No, it's not a typo. Bobe (pronounced beau-bee), is a fairly new Canadian bath and body line that has me swooning! The line was launched in 2006 by Marlese Sears, who has been so gracious to me. The story behind the name Bobe, an acronym for "beyond ordinary bath essentials", is just adorable. It started out as a funny family memory of a misspelled pet name. Their pet fish was to be "Bobby" but was misspelled "Bobe" and the name has stuck with her ever since.

You'll be tickled sweet with how many yummy scents her products come in. Bath and body products come in 50 scents and lip balms come in 70 scents! And would you believe that the products are made fresh at the time you place your order? That's definitely beyond ordinary. What's also beyond ordinary is that every month Bobe gives 5% of retail sales to a different charity!

I was excited when I received Bobe's Silken Cream in "Chai Tea Party, the Sugared Frosting Scrub in "Raspberry Lemonade" and Bobe Lip Balm in "Vanilla Soft Serve". I am a sucker for scented products and when I took a sniff of each I was amazed that they smelled exactly like its name! The Sugared Frosting ($8 CAD) is literally like rubbing sugar all over your body. Now that it's getting colder out and my skin is getting dryer, the scrub has been the best remedy. My skin is left feeling velvety soft. The smell of raspberry lemonade is intoxicating in a good way of course. I wasn't sure how I would feel about the scent when I first saw it but as soon as I opened the lid my mouth watered. Ok, what I'm about to admit is embarrassing but I've been known to do this. I took a little taste! It actually tasted pretty edible!

I don't think I've ever come across a chai scented body product and I was pleasantly surprised. The Silken Cream ($8 CAD) is soooo moisturizing and left my skin silky smooth and not greasy. It's a definite must for the winter season. The scent isn't overpowering but you can definitely smell the chai (although my husband thinks it smells like pumpkin).

I love anything vanilla scented so when I received the "Vanilla Soft Served" lip balm I was as giddy as a school girl! The scent is amazing and most of the time I find myself licking it off. It's pretty moisturizing but because I have really dry lips I find I have to keep reapplying every few minutes or so. Yah, my lips are that dry especially in the winter. It doesn't leave my lips as moisturized as my Rosebud Salve or Murad's Soothing Lip Therapy. But the heavenly scent is just too hard to resist that I don't mind reapplying! And at $3.75 (CAD) a pop you might as well buy all the scents!
*Tip: I buy a soft bristle tooth brush just for exfoliating the dead skin off my lips. Dampen the brush with warm water and exfoliate in a circular motion.

I'm really excited about this brand and I think it will have a strong following of scented bath and body fiends like me. It's Canadian, inexpensive, is beyond ordinary, unbelievable quality, gives back to the community, and has every scent you can think of! My kind of product. Oh, and Bobe has even adjusted it's Canadian price to reflect the value of our Looney! Next on my want list: Soy Fabulous Whipped Body Butter in "Frosted Sugar Cookie", Sugared Frosting Scrub in "Cupcake", and Lip Balm in "Carnival Candy Apple". So scrub up, slather away, and tantalize your senses with its yummy scents this winter season and any season! Happy shopping!

Beauty Review: Lovin' L'Oreal!

In a previous post, I mentioned that I had a slew of products to review. The time has finally come for me to get back to makeup!! Starting Round 1 of my beauty reviews are a few products from L'Oreal that have nestled into my main makeup bag (yes, I have more than one makeup bag!) and some that were given the boot. Here goes:

1. L'Oreal Voluminous Mascara: I love LOVE this mascara! I think the last mascara I reviewed was Benefit's Get Bent which I hate to admit was a disappointment. It got the boot after a few weeks. I was so in love when I originally purchased it and was heartbroken when day after day it smudged, weighed my lashes down and the brush got clumpier and clumpier with every use. I finally decided that it was time to stop fighting a water-proof formula because it is the only thing that makes these straight lashes curl and all day! I tried a few brands until I made my way down my list to L'Oreal's Voluminous mascara. My decision was also influenced by my interview with Billy B. back in July hehe. It doesn't smudge, smear, and gives the fullest lash without any clumps even after 2 or 3 coats! Hooray! It's inexpensive and gives the higher end brands a run for their money. Whenever it goes on sale I rush to the store and stock up! This mascara has definitely healed my broken heart!

2. L'Oreal Gentle Waterproof Eye and Lip Makeup Remover: If you're going to use a water-proof formula then you have to use a water-proof eye makeup remover. It was actually by chance that I picked this one up on a hurried shopping day. I was kind of surprised that there were few brands at the drugstore that carried a water-proof EMUR or maybe I missed some in my hastiness. This remover is a combo of blue oil and clear lotion. Shake the bottle and it becomes one remover that takes water-proof makeup easy without irritation or oiliness. What I also love is that you can use it to remove those long-lasting lip colours. Who doesn't love a 2 in 1 product?

3. L'Oreal Colour Juice Sheer Lip Gloss in Watermelon Crush: In a hurry to get to a baby shower I forgot to pack my Smashbox Lip Enhancing Gloss in Beauty a pinky-melon shade. I was in the mood for pink that day. While waiting for my friend at the subway station, I decided to make a trip to the drugstore to see if an inexpensive gloss would catch my eye. I scanned a few brands and of course landed in the L'Oreal section. I fell in love with all the colours but Watermelon Crush really caught my eye (ok a few caught my eye). It's a really nice pink-melon shade with gold undertones in it. The gloss gives a nice pop of colour, the right amount of shine, and is pretty moisturizing. I was expecting it to be really tacky but it wasn't at all. And you know me and scented products, I just couldn't resist. It's a wearable pink for anytime of the day. There's a few more on my list that I'd like to get and for under $10 a pop why not??

L'oreal's "Meh" Products:

There are a couple products that were ok but something I wouldn't keep in my main makeup bag. They weren't horrible, they were just "meh".

1. L'Oreal Bare Naturale Gentle Mineral Blush: I received this in my swag bag at fashionweek and was excited to try out this fairly new product. I've recently jumped on the band wagon and have bought some mineral products so I thought this would be another one to add to the bag. The colour I received was Pinched Pink which is a soft neutral pink blush. The applicator felt a little awkward to apply the blush with but I did like how you could buff the blush on. The blush has a nice luminous effect and gives the skin a glow. I had to swirl it on a few times to get some colour even though it says a little goes a long way. Not in my case. It's nice for fairer skin tones and for women who like a little blush and want it really natural. I wore it once during fashionweek and by the end of the night it looked like all colour had been drained from my face! It didn't last as long and made my cheeks look greasy instead of luminous. Ah well, you can't win them all! Anyone else have a better experience?

2. L'Oreal Infallible Lip Colour: If you haven't seen this product, it'll definitely catch your eye. One side is the lip colour and the other side is the long-lasting top coat all encased with a mirror on the outside. Cool right? If you like long-wear lip colours then try it out. I personally am not a fan of long-wear colours because I tend to have dryer lips than most. The moisturizing top coat felt more cakey than moisturizing. I forgot the colour I received but remembered it was a light frosty pink (gave this away of course). I was expecting a rich colour but it went on a lot sheerer than I expected. Not even a half hour went by and my lips were dry and cracked. I didn't really give it a fair chance in the lasting department because I ate something oily right after and came right off. However, I know someone that had an opposite experience and the colour looked rich and lasted a while. The colour was also really nice on her (I think it was Amethyst). I know this is wrong, but I ponded it off on my bestfriend! I really did think the colour would suit her better and I was hoping she would have a nicer experience! I'll have to ask her and get back to you!

Alright makeup junkies, that does it for Round 1 of my beauty reviews! Stay tuned for more goodies! Happy shopping!

Beauty News: Makeup Junkie Interviews Celebrity Makeup Artist Michael DeVellis at CMS!

As most of you know the Canadian Makeup Show is coming up this November 10 and 11 at Kool Haus! Exciting! What's even more exciting is that I will have a chance to have a one-on-one interview with The Powder Group founder himself Michael DeVellis!! We've been emailing each other back and forth for months now that I feel like I kind of know him! If you're not familiar with his fabulousness then shame on you! He is not only the founder of The Powder Group but also The Makeup Show and the soon to launch On Makeup Magazine! As the former Executive Director of Artist Relations at M.A.C. Cosmetics and 14 years in the industry I think he knows a thing or two about being successful makeup artist. For an industry that can be harsh at times, he's created a makeup artist community where artists can connect with each other and learn a few things from one another. But TPG isn't just for makeup artists. TPG concept: they want to be your resource for everything makeup. Through Michael's roster of talented makeup artists and some of the biggest names in the industry (Billy B.!), he's created seminars and workshops covering everything from technique to business. I think it's fantastic that he cares so much about the art and the people behind it.

Michael will be speaking at 12 pm November 10 in the seminar room about The Portfolio and Marketing Workshop. This is a wonderful seminar for those starting out in the makeup industry or needing a refresher. If you have any questions you would like me to ask him, please leave me a comment for consideration! I'm sure he'd love to hear from the readers. As excited as I am, I'm also VERY nervous but hopefully my interviews with Eddie Maleterre and Eric Del Monaco have prepared me enough! Fingers crossed! Stay tuned for the interview and for coverage of CMS!

Beauty News: Chick Advisor's Queen Street Shop Crawl Part Deux!

Missing the first Queen Street shop crawl was unfortunate and for me to miss the 2nd one would have been inexcusable! November 2nd was marked on my calendar months ago as soon as, Ali, from Chick Advisor announced she'd be organizing a part deux. And for those of you that don't know, Ali and her husband Alex, had the camera crews from CBC following the duo around for the last few weeks and ended their story with the successful shop crawl last Friday. Well deserved exposure for entrepreneurs on the rise, which is what the CBC show, Fortune Hunters, focuses on.

I was excited to have the chance to do Ali's makeup for the shop crawl. The morning of, I woke up with a terrible soar throat and made sure to down some vitamin c and DayQuil. There was no way I was going to miss this! Since Ali was also fighting a cold and frazzled with everything going on, we decided on going with a look that would make her look and feel fresh and radiant. She requested a look we did from 'Where'd You Get That?' Episode #2. We went with a shimmery gold shadow on the eyes, some falsies, soft pink on the apples of the cheek, and instead of a cherry red lip we went with a bright pink shade to match her oh-so-cute Chick Advisor t-shirt (which you can purchase online at www.chickadvisor.com)! Ali will be doing a write up of the makeup products I used on Chick Lit, the official Chick Advisor blog so be on the look out!

The CBC crew arrived and right away got down to business. It was fun watching them in action filming Ali's day-to-day Chick Advisor activities. Ali's sisters, Claire and Pam, were great fun and were of course there to help out with the shop crawl. I stuck around in case Ali needed me for touch ups and to help with the media swag bags. After Ali's interview wrapped up, it was time to head over to trendy Queen St. W to do some shopping!

It was a great turnout and I got to meet some cool Chick Advisor members. A few fashion bloggers also came out and indulged in some shopping. I fell in love with a lot of great shoes and a lot of great clothes, but all I allowed myself to get was a fabulously cozy sweater from Fraiche, that Ali and I both bought (don't worry - Ali assured me it was cool and I just had to get it!). It was a very popular store with us ladies during the shop crawl and it's too bad I didn't buy more. :( It's ok, Ali did enough damage for the both of us! lol

The night ended with an after-party at Milestones where all the ladies were treated to bellinis, food, fantastic swag bags, and prizes. I, unfortunately, had to cut the party short due to a feverish chill that had taken over my body! As fun as shopping can be, it can be a workout especially if you're sick and your medicine is wearing off! From Ali's pictures, everyone had an amazing time. Thank you to Ali and her husband for organizing such an amazing event for women to mingle and have a great time! Do I hear a shop crawl Part Trois in the works (doesn't have quite the same ring as part deux lol)??

Beauty News: Andy The-Anh Goes Angelic For Spring!

Andy The-Anh loves women. He didn't have to say it but he showed the love in his spring collection for 2008. The opening of the show was heavenly; faintly lit the model stood angelic in a beautiful white dress surrounded by clouds (thanks to a smoke machine). Andy is known for his gorgeous dresses and structured skirt and pant suits with ultra-feminine details. I loved the colour palette of pale turquoise, chocolate, bronze, gunmetal grays, creams, and whites. The added detailing of ruffles and bows on the dresses were my favourite and made each piece interesting and unique. The dresses were luxe and glamourous ranging in chiffon flowy dresses to satiny finishes. I absolutely loved the angelic effect of the makeup and hair. Their wavy long tresses looked amazing as they floated down the runway. It was all about movement and soft healthy hair. I loved the halo of white around the eyes and the white feathery lashes. The model's skin looked luminous with a hint of soft pink blush and pink glossy lips. The look was feminine and delicate yet strong and sophisticated. The show ended with all models walking the runway in the same dress and over-sized reflective sunglasses. They looked uber cool and kept me wanting more.

Beauty News: Bustle Delivers At L'Oreal Fashion Week Spring 2008

Bustle known for its sportif themed shows and preppy-sexy clothes, invited the audience to a night at the horse tracks last Tuesday. Always fun, fresh, and cheeky their spring collection did not disappoint. The venue filled in quickly as everyone eagerly took their seats. As much as I wanted to see the clothes, Bustle is also known for choosing hot male models with the perfect amount of buff and muscles. I along with probably every woman in the crowd sat on the edge of our seats, camera focused and ready. With a growing celebrity following (Nicole Ritchie, Tara Spencer-Nairn, Stacy McKenzie, and Jesse Metcalfe are huge fans) I spotted a few Canadian t.v. personalities: Jessie Cruickshank and Dan Levy, hosts of The Hills Aftershow on MTV who also strutted their stuff on the runway, the designers from PRC (I was able to get a quick snapshot of some of them) who came in support of their judge Shawn Hewson, the guys from Design Rivals and So Chic Chris Hyndman and Steven Sabados, and Monica Schnarre host of Celebrity R.S.V.P to name a few.

Bustle's spring line was a collection of sharply tailored leisure suits with a definite twist featuring a bright green horse shoe on the back pockets which added an element of surprise. The colour palette included pastels mixed with neutrals and browns in solids and pinstripes. Ties, bowties, hats, and suspenders added a bit of fun to each outfit. The suits were nicely fitted on the models showcasing their athletic frame...oh yes, back to the clothes! This season featured pieces mainly for guys and a few male-inspired outfits for the women.

Lawyers-turned-designers and power couple, Shawn Hewson and Ruth Promislow, have definitely created a niche market creating clothes for the next generation of trendy and fashion conscious sport aficianados. I left the show feeling giddy - I guess that's what guys in really nice clothes does to a woman. Now if horse jockeys could only look like the models that night...
