Makeup 101: New Year's Eve Makeup That Will Last

Happy New Year! I raise my glass to the end of 2010! What a year it has been for myself and pretty much everyone I know. 2010 was full of crazy bumps but despite it all, I've come out with a much clearer head. I've failed, succeeded, but above all learned from each and every one of those significant moments in my life. I'm excited for 2011 for more reasons than one and can't wait to get this party started!

Sorry peeps, this was the best close-up photo I could get of myself. This was taken on Christmas Eve close to the end of the night, but figured if you want makeup that will ring you into the new year then you'll want to read up on the long-wearing products I used!

Star Products:

Top Left: Make Up For Ever Aqua Cream in Steel #2 ($26 CAD):  You want a shadow that won't budge? MUFE's Aqua Creams are a dream! I used this as the base of my shadow, on the lid, inner corner, and lower lash line. I wanted a warm, charcoal-silver smokey eye with a hint of shimmer. Steel is a gorgeous silver with an almost taupe undertone. I prefer this over a true silver as it looks too cool on my warm skin tone. The Aqua Creams are budge-proof and set pretty quickly. They apply really easy onto the skin but you have to blend it really quickly. The finishes are pretty shimmery, but when paired with a matte shadow the shimmer is toned down. It would be great if matte shades were introduced to the line - fingers crossed!

Top Right: M.A.C. Eye Shadow in Print ($17.50 CAD) This one is an oldie but a goody! Print is one of my beloved true greys. I find some greys either have too much blue or too much black. It's not quite a matte but has a more satin finish. I applied this close to the top and bottom lash line, outer lid, and crease. M.A.C. as always delivers on amazing pigment, doesn't crease or fade, and blends so easily.

Middle: Sephora Favourites The Little Black Eye Liner Kit ($36 USD): Like an LBD, every woman should own at least one black eye liner. This set includes 7 of Sephora's most essential black eye liners plus an eye brush from the following brands:
  • 0.02 oz Smashbox Limitless Eye Liner in Onyx
  • 0.07oz Tarte EmphasEYES Waterproof Clay ShadowLiner in Black
  • 0.005 oz Tarte EmphasEYES Inner Eye Rim Pencil in Black
  • 0.02 oz Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil in Zero
  • 0.06oz Sephora Collection Jumbo Eye Liner in Grey
  • 0.003 oz Hourglass Calligraphy Liquid Eye Liner in Ebony
  • 0.025 oz Make Up Forever Aqua Eyes in Black
  • Smashbox Eye Liner Brush
For this look I reached for one of my favourite liners, Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Pencil in Zero. I didn't want an obvious line so I lined underneath my top lash line, smudged it close into my lash line, and along my waterline. To make the liner last in the waterline, line, wait for it to set, then line again. I have more reviews to come from this kit!

Bottom: Burt's Bees Tinted Lip Balm in Tiger Lily ($7.99 CAD): My night started out with NARS Pure Matte Lipstick in Bangkok and Orgasm Gloss, but as the night wore on it was my Burt's Bees Tinted Lip balm in Tiger Lily (not pictured) that my dry lips longed for and is the lippie shown on myself. I have been using this non-stop ever since I received it and I can't wait to snatch all of them up! Sadly, we'll have to wait until February 2011 to purchase these.

It comes in six shades: Honeysuckle (nude), Tiger Lily (peach-nude), Pink Blossom (soft pink), Hibiscus (rosy pink), Rose (red) and Red Dahlia (wine). It's 100% natural and is made from natural botanical flower waxes (ylang-ylang and jasmine), Shea Butter, Vitamin E and Beeswax. I adore the pear scent. It's a nice change from the common minty and vanilla flavours of so many other lip products out there. The packaging is simple and true to the Burt's Bee's line, but I love that they didn't go with their traditional yellow honeycomb packaging. The lip balm comes encased in a lovely cardboard tube package which I just love! The texture is super smooth and will help keep your lips moisturized all night long. For a sheer tint, you definitely see colour on the lips. Tiger Lily was the perfect peachy-nude for my smokey eye.

12 Days of Holiday Beauty: Festive Party Nails

I used to think glittery polishes were oh-so-80's, but then when I kept thinking about how I wanted to do my nails for Christmas visions of blinging glittery nails popped in my head. I didn't want to do the traditional classic red or reach for my deep purple shades. All I knew was that I wanted to do something a little different, a little edgy.

I went to all the stores on the hunt for a glittery polish and what do you know, all but one store was sold out! Guess I wasn't the only one who wanted a little bling on the nails. I originally wanted gold glitter but then I saw this adorable mini set from Nicole by OPI Tinsel Tips for $12.99 CAD at Shoppers Drug Mart. Since I wouldn't normally wear a glitter polish a mini bottle is all I really needed. This would definitely make the perfect stocking stuffer! The set includes:
  • Jewel Nail Decals
  • Spark My Mistletoe (red glitter pictured on my nails)
  • Stuck In The Chimney (gorgeous shimmering plum)
  • Kiss Me At Midnight (deep chocolate with red shimmer)
This is my version of edgy festive party nails - red glitter over a plain black polish. Glitter should stand out on its own. Layering it over black is the perfect way for a glitter polish to stand out. I generally don't like plain black nails but a glittery polish brightens it up.

The black polish is from Barry M. Cosmetics, a popular cosmetic line from the U.K. It's the first product I've ever tried from the line and I have to say I am impressed with how opaque and non-streaky their polishes apply. It's only my first day wearing it so I'm not sure how long it will stay chip-free but there will be more reviews to come. The line is not available in Canada but if you want to see Barry M. in Canada join the Facebook page here.

What do you think of my festive party nails? Too edgy or goth for a nice Christmas dinner?

Holiday 2010: All I Want For Christmas Is...LAVANILA Deluxe Mini Roller Set!

Fragrances for me can be a little iffy. If a scent doesn't sit well on me, I immediately get a headache. So when I find one that smells divine and doesn't make my head spin, I hang on to it! I've always wanted to try Lavanila products so I was excited to receive this mini holiday set. I think this would be a great set for anyone since Vanilla is a pretty likeable scent. I've always been a vanilla lover - it's warm, cozy, inviting, and yummy!

This mini roller set includes:
  • Vanilla Lavender
  • Pure Vanilla
  • Vanilla Coconut
  • Vanilla Grapefruit
These scents will not only make you smell good but they're actually good for you too! These lovely scents contain all natural, skin-friendly ingredients that are free of parabens, sulfate, synthetic fragrances, synthetic dyes, and petro-chemicals. The fragrances are infused with pure essential oils which makes for a long-lasting scent. At the end of the day, I can still smell it the vanilla all over me. The roller ball and deluxe size make it easy for applying on-the-go and for carrying around in your purse. I especially love roller balls for precise application like behind the ears.
My favourite two that I always reach for are Pure Vanilla and Vanilla Coconut. Every time I wear either scents, my lil' guy can't help but sniff me. He immediately thinks of cake or cookies. I sometimes layer the two for an extra vanilla scent. The Vanilla Lavender is more floral with a hint of vanilla. It's a calming scent but I like it better when I layer the Pure Vanilla over top. The Vanilla Grapefruit is surprisingly not too sweet which I like. I reach for this when I'm in a more fruity mood.

LAVANILA Mini Roller Ball Set retails for $40 CAD and is available online at The Shopping Channel.

12 Days of Holiday Beauty: Side-Pinned Wavy Hair

Nothing says party hair then a head of beautiful wavy curls. This is one look I do often when I'm stepping out to a special event.

You'll want to start with lots of volume in the hair. The key to making this hair less cute and more Victoria Secret-esque is to do big curls. Apply a volumizing spray or mousse to the root of the hair and blow dry the root up if styling from wet. You can use your hands to direct the hair up. Once the hair is completely dry, wrap 1 inch sections of your hair around a big barrel curling iron. Always curl your hair away from the face unless you're going for Old Hollywood. Curling away from the face makes it look more modern and up-to-date. If your hair doesn't hold a curl too well, use a light hold hairspray and spray as you go. If you have straight bangs you'll want to curl your bangs away from your head as well. You want to avoid looking like you have to different hair styles.

If you don't have a big barrel iron, use your small one and at the end brush out your curls to make them look big and bouncy. Once your hair is completely curled, pin one side up. Be creative and add a twist to the hair and secure with a sparkly hair brooch. When you are satisfied with the look, spray all over with an extra hold hair spray.

What's your go-to party hair style?

12 Days of Holiday Beauty: Silver Smokey Eyes

It's the final countdown! Only 3 more days left until Christmas! I'm hoping by now you have lots of beauty looks to choose from for your big Christmas party. This next look is both edgy and sexy for the holiday season. Take the classic smokey eye and add a metallic finish for a new twist.

Silver smokey eyes look great on just about everyone. This sultry look is actually really easy to do. In the beginning, smokey eyes can be really messy. I like to prep the eyes first and save the foundation for last. Be sure to prep your eyes always with a primer. You don't want your shadow creasing or fading throughout the night. When doing a smokey eye, you want the effect to look like a gradient of colours. Use a flat shadow brush and press on the darkest shade of charcoal grey on the lid. Choose a shadow that has more of a satin finish. You can bring the dark shade into the outer crease as well. Apply a matte medium grey to the crease with a fluffier brush to blend the two shades together. You can also apply the medium grey to the bottom lash line for a smudgy definition. Then apply a white or light beige shade to the brow bone.

To give the smokey eye a metallic finish, apply a silver metallic shadow in the inner corners top and bottom. Add the same shade just to the center of the lid to make the eyes pop. Skip liner on the top and bottom and only line the waterline with a black pencil. Don't forget to apply a few coats of black mascara. Since this is a strong eye, keep the rest of your face more muted. Contour the cheeks with a neutral blush or bronzer and add a nude beige lipstick or gloss to the lips.

What do you think of silver smokey eyes? Do you find a smokey eye hard to do?

12 Days of Holiday Beauty: Luminous Skin

Makeup: Hung Vanngo

This is radiant, glowing skin done right. With the holidays comes drier weather and often times your skin can look like it has been zapped of all its moisture. Adding a gorgeous luminizer in key areas of the face can make all the difference. I think Camilla Belle’s luminous look is perfection. I’ve seen some people that just go overboard with the shimmer and look more sweaty than radiant. If you plan on taking lots of photos during the holidays, an overly shiny face will be very noticeable.

If you have drier skin, you can afford to mix a liquid highlighter with your foundation. Your skin will have an overall dewy effect. If you have oilier skin or aren’t comfortable with too much shimmer, apply a highlighter in key areas of the face where the light hits: brow bone, inner corner of the eyes, high planes of the cheekbones, down the middle of the nose and in the cupid’s bow just above the lip. If you have problematic skin, avoid highlighters all together as it will only accentuate scars and blemishes. If you will be wearing something off-the-shoulder, with a plunging v, or strapless apply a highlighter to your neck and decolletage.

Highlighters come in different formulations: cream, liquid and powders. All work great but I find creams and liquids give the skin a dewier finish. There are even luminizing primers to help enhance your highlighters. For the rest of your makeup, mix shimmery and matte tones on the eyes. The matte shadows will help downplay too much shine on the eyes. If you are going to highlight your cheekbones, avoid using a shimmery blush on the cheeks. The apples of the cheeks are perfect targets for “hot” spots on the face. Finish off your luminous look with a shimmering gloss.

Don’t forget a good facial and rich moisturizer is the base of luminous skin. If you take care of your skin, you will always look healthy and radiant. This is one of the easiest trends to pull of this season so treat your skin to a radiant glow!

What do you think of glowing skin? How do you achieve luminous skin?

12 Days of Holiday Beauty: Ruby Red Lips!

Holiday beauty wouldn’t be the same if I didn’t mention the classic red lip! The colour red is fiery, exciting, and all-around glamorous. It’s such a striking colour you have to be confident to carry it off. You’ll be seeing a lot of Old Hollywood makeup inspirations this season, but there are ways to make it look different and fresh.

I love the above photo because the model’s skin is luminous and her eyes are pretty much bare. The deepness of the red is also stunning against the neutral makeup. This version of wearing red is modern and a little edgy. Mix a luminizing highlighter or serum with your foundation to give your skin a natural glow. Add a wash of silvery-white or champagne gold shadow to the lids. If your eyes need more definition, smudge a black pencil liner to the lash line and apply a few coats of mascara to the lashes. Define the contours of your cheeks with a bronzer or wine coloured blush. Wear a wine-coloured red lipstick as a stain for an effortless finish.

Instead of going with a classic red lipstick, try one that has a shimmery or pearly finish. If you prefer a gloss, look for a red shade in the same finish for a new twist on red lips. Just remember to prep your lips with a primer so that the gloss doesn’t bleed or softly line the lips with a red liner after you’ve applied your gloss. This will give a softer finish.

If you have never tried red lips, the holiday season is the time to try it out! It’s fun, festive, and washes off! ;)

Holiday 2010: All I Want For Christmas Is...Moroccanoil With Vanity Case!

Gimme good hair please all year round! I instantly fell in love with Moroccanoil when I started working at a salon a couple of years ago. I love the light-weight feel, the silky texture, and the gorgeous shine it gives my hair. It works amazing on curly, frizzy hair without weighing it down.

I love the new kits that are coming out for the holidays from Moroccanoil. This particular set includes:
  • Moroccanoil Orange Vanity Case
  • Glimmer Shine Spray
  • Moroccanoil Treatment 100 ml
  • Moroccanoil Treatment 10 ml
  • Retails for $66 CAD
I am loving the Glimmer Shine Spray. I've been wanting to get my hands on this! It gives the hair a beautiful shine, enhances the colour of your hair and prevents hair static. When I air dry my hair, it has a frizzy wavy finish. I spray a little of this and my hair looks less scary! The argan oil is a powerful antioxidant and protects against the harsh environmental factors. So, let the wind blow your hair any way it wants because your hair will still look gorgeous and healthy!

UPDATE: Makeup Artist Corner: So You Want To Be A Makeup Artist...

(WARNING: Lengthy post but hopefully full of helpful tips!)

Gorgeous Claire on her wedding day

UPDATE: For MUA's that want to assist read this awesome post  from Huffy at Breathing Space. Important tips!

I love being a makeup artist and I can see why so many want to be one. Playing with makeup, being creative, making people look pretty - what's not to love right? It's not all glamorous though especially if you're a freelance artist. It takes a lot of hard work, dedication, great customer service, people skills, a love for what you do, and above all HUSTLE!

It seems everyday new makeup artists are emerging trying to be the next big thing. A makeup artist is like a realtor - everyone knows one. I think it's awesome because I find with each new artist I meet, I get inspired by their passion and excitement for their craft. I often get emails asking for advice on how to break into the industry. I love sharing my experience as well as the experience of other great artists I've had the pleasure of meeting, shadowing and interviewing. Their words and my experiences with them have shaped who I am as an artist. My journey will continue to evolve because it's always a learning process.

This post is inspired by Michelle, who is the founder of BeautyEditor.ca. Her insightful post about becoming a beauty editor received a huge response. I felt in some ways the truths and myths of becoming a beauty editor were similar to becoming a makeup artist. Michelle's question to me was, "I’ve always wondered – what does it take to become a truly great, world-renowned makeup artist… how do you become, say, a Gucci Westman or a Pat McGrath?"

Here is what I say (my opinions and suggestions are based on my own experience):

1. I want to be the next Pat McGrath, Gucci Westman, Billy B. or the late great Kevyn Aucoin.

It's good to strive for something big and when I started out I wanted to be like my first makeup hero, Kevyn Aucoin. When I first started my blog, I had the amazing opportunity to interview world renowned celebrity makeup artist, Billy B. I'll never forget a lot of his advice but one that stands out the most to me was, "Don't waste your life aspiring to be me or to have my career". Wise words. Don't try to be a Pat McGrath (as AH-mazing as she is). Be YOU. Of course, be inspired by the great ones but always be you. Becoming world renowned are often extraordinary cases and often hard to achieve. I'm not saying it can't be done, but a lot of it has to do with knowing the right people, being in the right place at the right time, talent and a little luck. But if being the next Pat McGrath is really what you want, get in touch with their people and see if you can start assisting them. You will be learning from the best of the best plus will be networking with people in their circle.

When I first started I looked up a few makeup artists whose work I admired. Over 6 years later I still turn to my mentors for advice and inspiration. Some of my mentors are Andrea Claire, Lucky B., Hung Vanngo, and Michael DeVellis from The Powder Group.

2. You are only successful if your work is in the pages of fashion magazines.

Been there done that - ok I've only had 2 pieces of my work in magazines lol. Referencing back to point #1, success is not measured by whether you become the next Pat McGrath. Success is measured by whatever your goals are as an artist. Yes, celebrity artists and those that are session artists are successful, but keep in mind that there are successful artists in every area of the industry. I think there is a perception that if you are not an editorial artist, you are not successful or credible as an artist. There are some makeup artists that choose to focus solely on the bridal industry and are highly sought-after. I actually think it's more challenging and rewarding to work with real women who have actual flaws and make them look and feel beautiful. If you want to be successful, the first step is to stop comparing yourself to others and instead be inspired by them. Be proud of your work and never stop learning. If you think you know it all, don't because there's always something new to learn and always someone new to learn from.

When I first started out, I wanted to work in the fashion industry but things changed after I had my son. The pace of the fashion world and the attitudes just weren't for me. For the first little while, I thought I was a failure because I was not working in fashion. After many years of searching and figuring out what I was truly good at, I'm very happy with my decision to work in bridal, have the opportunity to work with different beauty brands, special events and the odd fashion job. So far, I've had a successful journey and each job big or small is a stepping stone that I can add until I reach my ultimate goal. I'm by no means a Gucci Westman, but I'm still doing what I love to do and to me that is success.

3. Putting makeup on people seems like such a fun job.

True, it is a fun job but just because it's a field in beauty doesn't mean there isn't any grunt work involved. Whatever industry you decide to go in you have to be prepared for the long hours, irregular schedules, egos, constant self-promotion, and always hustling for the next job. On top of that, you have to make yourself stand out in the growing sea of other makeup artists. You'll go far in the industry if you have a good work ethic and know how to have fun while doing it!

4. Do I have to go to school to be a makeup artist?

Going to school isn't necessary, but it's great for learning the basics. Some of the best artists I know are self-taught. I took a few courses in school, but the most valuable experience was working in the field. I do think getting formal training is good because it teaches you different techniques for fashion editorial, television, theater and film especially if you want to specialize in SFX  or airbrush makeup. You also learn a great deal about the importance of lighting and how it affects the way your makeup looks.

5. How do I break into the industry?

Model: Malina (Sutherland, Chantale Nadeau), Hair/MU: Joy David, Photographer: Felix Wong

The term "industry" is such a broad term. There are many areas of the beauty industry to work in as an artist. Do you want to work in fashion? If so, start building your book by doing creatives. I suggest booking an appointment with an agency to show your current work and to see if you can start assisting the bigger artists. A rep at an agency will also be able to tell you what you need to work on and what they are looking for in an artist.

The Shopping Channel for CARGO Cosmetics

Do you want to be a bridal makeup artist? Work in cosmetic retail? Television? Film? I suggest in the first two years of your career to dabble in everything. You'll not only gain experience but will realize what you want to do the most as an artist. This is another reason why school is beneficial; you will have the opportunity to work on fashion shoots, short films, and in theater.

Hope For Haiti beauty event, a mix of makeup artists, hair stylists and bloggers

Start a blog, connect with other bloggers who are makeup artists, get a Twitter account, make a Facebook page, and have an online site to showcase your work. These are all great ways to break into the industry and get noticed. A lot of my jobs have come through Makeup Junkie. Staying connected via social networks is an excellent, cost-effective way to market yourself and to build your business. The more people see your name, the more they will think of you for a job.

 Show me the money!

6. Can you make a living doing makeup full-time?

The million dollar question! Have you heard the term "starving artist"? Well, that's what it's like the first few years and for some their whole career. You aren't going to be making the big bucks right away so you have to really love being a makeup artist. You will have to put in a lot of hours doing free work to gain experience. The best advice I can give is to plan out exactly what it is you want to do. This way, you know where you're headed and what you need to work towards.

I started in cosmetic retail and freelanced on the side. It was great because I got a steady paycheck and was still able to build my book. For some companies that pay above minimum wage, getting full-time hours was very competitive. If you're working part-time in cosmetic retail, it won't be enough to live on especially if you have rent or a mortgage to pay. If you want to work your way up in the company and be a counter manager, senior artist, or national trainer you will be able to live comfortably. Keep in mind, working in cosmetic retail isn't so much about makeup artistry as it is about sales. I think M.A.C. is a great company to get your start in because even though they focus on sales they also do fun makeup events and have workshops to keep up your makeup skills. In the beginning, I loved working at M.A.C. because I was able to learn how to think outside the box in terms of using products and brushes in different ways.

I had the awesome pleasure of working on Knaan for We Day Toronto

If the fashion industry is your goal and you want to get in an agency, the pay varies from job to job. Big campaigns, commercial work, working on celebrities, and catalog is where the money is at. The frequency of work will also depend on the jobs out there and how in demand you are. I've heard from some artists and stylists that are in an agency that there will be times when work is really slow and you'll have nothing for months then be busy for 4 months straight. So be prepared for the irregular schedules. Agencies also take a percentage of your pay but on the upside they are there to find you work.

If you work a full-time job right now and are thinking about freelancing, make sure you are busy enough to make a living before taking the plunge. Of course when I decided to leave M.A.C. and freelance 4 years ago, I did not take my own advice but call me spontaneous (or not a good planner!). Thankfully, I have a very supportive husband and family. Consider yourself self-employed which means you have to find your own work, network like it's nobody's business, keep track of all your paperwork/receipts and do your own taxes (that is if you register yourself as a business). The upside is that your schedule is flexible and are able to build work around your life. You are your own boss and can run it however you want. This is also great for artists who have kids or plan to start a family. It works for my lifestyle and I don't have to compromise spending time with my job or my family. Another plus is that each job is different and new. Every new experience is a stepping stone to where you want to go in your career.

My beautiful friend Lauren

The bridal industry is great for freelancing because depending how in demand you are, you can make a pretty decent living especially if you're booking 2-3 weddings a weekend. If you're new to bridal makeup and don't have a lot of clients, stick to doing makeup on the side. You may have to do some weddings for free to build your book because brides will want to see examples of your work. Another option is to offer your trials for free and if she likes your work you can charge her on the wedding day. This way you can build your book and get paid later on.

People are always getting married and the majority of the time makeup artists are in high demand. To stay competitive with your fellow artists you need to rely heavily on referrals. Once one person refers you it creates a snowball effect. No one will refer a bad makeup artist. Work your network of people which includes your family, friends, workmates, other artists and other industry type people. If you have the budget, it doesn't hurt to pay for an ad in a bridal magazine or bridal site. Getting in touch with wedding planners and wedding photographers will also help you out. Keep in mind the wedding season usually starts mid-March (earlier for some) and typically goes until mid-November. You will have some slow months so be sure to budget for that. Be prepared to lose your weekends too, but it really isn't that bad. Most times you'll be working early mornings to noon and have the rest of the day to yourself.

7. Figuring out rates is so confusing

When you feel you've gained enough experience and confidence to start getting paid for jobs, figuring out what your rate is can be a little tricky. There was a great article that went around about not underselling yourself because well, you want to make a living don't you? The more artists start undercutting their rates, the more clients will expect lower rates.

VAWK feature in Zink Canada. I had a lot of fun working backstage Sunny's Fall/Winter 2010 show during LG Fashion Week in Toronto

If a client asks you what your rate is for a special event, editorial, music shoot, commercial or a TV shoot and you're not sure what to charge, I always like to ask what their budget is. Most times the rate is negotiable and you can come to a compromise. If you charge too low, the client won't take you seriously. If they can't budge on the budget but you feel the opportunity will be good to add to your portfolio use your judgement. More often than not, the experience will be something to learn from.

I have a standard half day rate and full day rate. When figuring out what your rate is, think about how much you want to be paid per hour, your level of experience, how valuable your time is, what your travel time and costs will be, and how much you would charge to work on one person/per hour. Depending on the job, there can be long hours where you're waiting around on set doing touch-ups and sometimes you'll have to change up the model's eyes and lips. Another great way to gauge your rate is to figure out the total hours you spent doing a wedding and how much you made per/hour.

If you're still stuck just asks other artists. Most are willing to give you an idea what to charge.

8.  Do I really need to learn how to do hair?

If you want to work in the Canadian fashion market, then yes you do need to know hair. For a long time, I was resistant against learning how to style hair. It just wasn't my thing, but not knowing any techniques hindered my career and my confidence. The more you know the more in demand you will be. It's cheaper for clients to hire one person that can do it all. There will be some jobs where a separate hair stylist and makeup artist will be needed but most times you'll have to do both. If you're in bridal, knowing hair isn't crucial as brides are willing to hire both a hair and makeup artist, but if you can do both it'll benefit you financially.
Other artists told me to wing it but winging it wasn't enough for me. So, I decided to get a job working in a salon and a blow dry bar. I'm not a pro yet, but I can style hair pretty good now! After working at it for a couple of years, I don't mind it so much now. Although I don't work in a salon anymore, I'm glad I can take my new hair skills with me to any job. 9. Now that I'm a makeup artist, I need to go crazy building my kit.

When I was in makeup school and we were given our M.A.C. student discount, the first thing I did was made a list of all the things I "needed". The reality is I didn't know what I really needed. I was young and naive and the sales rep at the time totally cashed in on me. He looked at my list, set it aside, and walked me through each section of makeup telling me which ones I absolutely needed for my kit. A little over $400 (with the discount) later, I left the store feeling like a "real" artist. As time went on, I ended up not using half of what I bought and either gave it away or let it go bad.

In the beginning, don't worry about upgrading your metal train case for a bigger one until your makeup stash grows or you're getting really busy. Items to invest in would definitely be brushes, foundations, powders, and concealers. I'm sorry but in my experience, drugstore face products just don't cut it for makeup that needs to last long in photography or television. Some brands let you buy samples of their foundations. Stock up on samples until you find the best ones you like to work with. Read reviews and ask other artists what they have in their kit.

IMATS Toronto 2009

Apply for every makeup artist discount possible so you can save because in case you haven't noticed makeup can get expensive! Most brands offer one so just inquire. Back in the day, makeup shows didn't exist but they do now! If you want to save on some quality high-end products, definitely visit the makeup show especially for deals on brushes.

For shadows, you don't necessarily need to splurge on high-end brands. If you're going to go drugstore, just make sure it has strong pigment, is long-lasting, and offers a variety of textures and shades. I like going with pro lines, however, because you can buy empty pro palettes and customize your palettes. When it comes to choosing what shades to include in your kit, don't go overboard. It's surprising how many artists starting out don't have neutrals in their kit! A good neutral palette is essential - I use this for just about everything to shading brows, lining the eyes, and of course as a shadow. Have another palette that includes your pinks, purples, plums, olives - think colours that would compliment different eye shades. Then have a palette that has your bright bolds but don't go crazy. Unless you do a lot of high-end editorial or beauty ads you probably won't reach for this palette too often. Also, keep frosty and glittery textures to a minimum as these textures don't photograph too well.

For your cheek products, I think having 1 pink, 1 peach, 1 rose, 1 neutral pink/brown, 1 raisin or bright berry, and a medium and dark bronzer will cover all or most skin tones. Go for a satin finish and if you want a shimmery finish just brush a separate shimmery highlighter over top. I think it's also great to have the same shades in a creamy texture for drier skin tones.

Lip products are fun to splurge on but you don't have to. There are so many great drugstore brands that offer a variety of colours, textures and are well pigmented. Most women are particular about their lip colour so it's best to have as many shades on hand as possible, but you can also mix other colours together. For glosses, all you really need is a clear gloss, 1 shimmery champagne/gold, and 1 shimmery pink. But again, some women prefer just using glosses. Having a medium coverage gloss in nude pink, nude beige, rose, pink/brown, peach, berry, plum, shimmering chocolate, sheer red and bronze are good starters.

10. When I'm on a job, I can act however I want and just have fun.

Last day of TIFF 2010 with eTalk correspondent, Susie Wall

With every job even if it's in a fun environment, you still have to bring a level of professionalism. When you get chosen for a job and are not familiar with the client, it's always good to research and find out what their expectations are of you. Most makeup jobs are fun, but it's best to keep inappropriate comments to yourself to avoid offending anyone. Some clients want you to keep chit chat to a minimum especially if it's a talent that has to go on air. It doesn't mean you shouldn't be friendly and cold though. Being polite and professional will always put a talent at ease. When I worked on eTalk Vancouver correspondent, Susie Wall for TIFF, she brought up a very good point; the makeup artist is usually the last person she speaks with before going on air. If you make the talent feel uneasy in any way, you could mess up their whole take or the whole day.

Bride is all smiles!

The same goes for doing makeup on a bride. Brides are under a lot of stress and can sometimes be on edge. If you are condescending or are not listening to what she wants, this could cause you the job if it's a trial or ruin how they feel on their big day.

Bottom line is to be polite, professional, work hard, have a good attitude, ALWAYS be on time for every job and SMILE!

I hope my 2 cents (or 10 in this case) have helped you figure out this crazy world of makeup artistry. To be successful, it takes a lot of hard work but if it's really what you want never give up! Join makeup artist communities, sign up for makeup artist related websites or magazines, get a mentor or a few, do your research, stay connected via social networks, make a plan and stick with it. If something doesn't go your way, figure out a way around it to make it work for you. Above all, don't try to be someone else. Bring your true self to any job and you will go far! Good luck!

If you're a makeup artist and have any other great tips to add please feel free to add in the comment section!

Holiday 2010: All I Want For Christmas Is...Too Faced Enchanted Glamourland!

Pop-up palettes seem to be all the rage right now and when they come as pretty as Too Faced's version I can see why. This one is a good buy for a gal pal who is a princess and even more perfect for that makeup obsessed teen.

Too Faced Enchanted Glamourland palette includes:
  • 15 x 0.03 oz Eye Shadows in: In The Buff, Exclusive Nude, George & Weezie, Velvet Revolver, Honey Pot, Teddy Bear, Exclusive Purple, Boy Toy, Peach Fuzz, Exclusive Green, Label Whore, Glamazon, Exclusive Plum, Ooh & Aah, and Stiletto
  • 0.35 oz Shadow Insurance primer
  • 0.12 oz Glamour Gloss in Pillow Talk
  • 0.08 oz La Vie en Rose Blush
  • 0.14 oz Snow Bunny Bronze
  • Three Get-the-Look instruction cards

The pink blush gives the skin a nice rosy flush with shimmer. However, I did find even with my face primer that the colour did fade by the end of the day. I layered a pink cream blush underneath and found the blush lasted longer. The bronzer on my skin tone worked more as a highlighter rather than a bronzer, but will work well on lighter skin tones. I also prefer to use non-shimmery bronzers.

The texture of the shadows felt velvety smooth but the colours weren't too different than shadows I already own. I did like that there were a few matte shadows thrown in there but for the most part the shadows had a metallic finish. I thought the colour payoff was pretty good and had good lasting power. I'd say if you love your neutrals but are trying to ease into colour this palette is a great start. The gloss is a sheer nude pink and really didn't show up too much on my lips. I applied my Benefit Lip Plump to cover my natural lip colour and it showed up much better but I couldn't get over the sweet yet waxy flavour of the gloss.

My favourite part of the palette has to be the Shadow Insurance Primer. I have been wanting to try this for a long time and I love it. In terms of crease-resistance, I think it's comparable to my kit must-have, Urban Decay Primer Potion. However, Too Faced's comes in a squeezable tube which means no wasting product! I always felt I was leaving a lot behind with UD's wand version.

Overall, this pop-up palette truly is a beauty. if you love Too Faced products already and if you're a sucker for packaging and love eye candy, you or your special friend will love it!

What do you think of this palette? Love it? Hate it? Want it?

Too Faced Enchanted Glamourland retails for $49 USD (value of $145) and is available at Sephora locations and Sephora.com.

12 Days of Holiday Beauty: Jewel-Toned Eyes!

I love the holidays because colours around this time are so rich and decadent. You’ll notice a lot of colours dominating shadow palettes this season are jewel tones in blue, purple, gold, and emerald. If you’re still on the fence about wearing colour on the eyes, just go with it and have fun!

The key to working jewel tones is to stick to a shade that compliments and enhances your eye colour. Once you see how much the complimentary shade brings out your eyes, the less uncomfortable you’ll feel wearing colour on the eyes.
  • Brown Eyes can pretty much wear any shade. Purple, green, navy blue, and gold all make brown eyes pop.
  • Green or Hazel Eyes: Plum, peach, purple, gold and bronze hues
  • Blue Eyes: Brown, peach, bronze, gold, silver, grey, purple, black
Add a darker shade in the outer crease to give it a sexy, smoky effect. For some fun and sparkle, add a glittery liner to the lash line. Don’t forget to add lots of mascara to make those lashes stand out! Keep the cheeks and lips more muted so that the eyes can be the focus.

What do you think of jewel tones on the eyes?

12 Days of Holiday Beauty: Gimme Big Bold Lashes!

Have you ever wondered why women in movies or on TV (some in real life) flutter their eyes to grab the attention of that special someone? The flutter of the lashes are an invitation to her world. Want to be the focus at every holiday gathering? Go big, go bold with your lashes.

If you weren’t born with naturally long and lush lashes, do not fear because the beauty market is saturated with products just for your lashes. Curl them, apply your most volumizing and lengthening mascara, apply some falsies, or look into lash enhancing treatments which I have a hunch will be big in 2011 (wink, LATISSE). Whatever you decide, the goal is to make those peepers pop!

Be daring and make those lashes stand out even more with a glittery mascara. Coloured mascaras are also fun and festive around this time of the year. Cobalt blue and purple mascaras will really enhance the colour of your eyes and make the whites of your eyes brighter.

No matter what the trend of the moment is, big lashes go with everything and never go out of style!

How do you get your lashes to stand out?

Beauty News: This Makeup Junkie Is In 24 Hours Today!

I'm thrilled to be in today's Toronto edition of 24 Hours! Check me out on page 22 talking about holiday beauty trends and Latisse, the first and only prescription eyelash growth treatment that is now available in Canada. In case you haven't heard, I am currently the beauty expert for Latisse and I've also been lucky enough to give this lash treatment a spin! It's only been a little over a month and I'm starting to see some growth and fullness.

If you're not familiar with Latisse it grows your natural lashes longer, fuller and darker. The results are significant as well! When I get a chance I will post some photos of my lash progress. Like the article says, if you try the product now you won't have lush lashes in time for your holiday parties. It takes 16 weeks to see full results. But hey, why not start the new year with long, beautiful lashes?? When you reach for your eyelash curler and mascara, it won't take much effort to get that flirty lash you've always wanted! Sounds good in my books!

As with any cosmetic treatment, book an appointment with your physician to see if Latisse is right for you. Customers can only get this product with a prescription. Latisse has been clinically tested to safely and effectively grow your natural lashes. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me anytime!

Holiday 2010: All I Want For Christmas Is...Smashbox The Gold List!

Give me gold and I'm a happy girl. If you're looking for that gorgeous glow this season, look no further. I love the holiday sets from Smashbox especially The Gold List! Nothing says festive than a little holiday bling!

This is a great gift that keeps on giving. With each purchase from the Smashbox WISH collection, Smashbox will donate $1 from every purchase, up to $25,000, to Children's Miracle Network, a nonprofit organization that grants the wish of life by providing medical care, life-saving research and ongoing education to help millions of kids overcome diseases and injuries. The set includes:
  • Fusion Soft Lights in Baked Starburst (Regular Size)
  • Photo Finish Luminizing Foundation Primer (Travel Size)
  • O-Gloss Gold (Regular Size)
  • Photo-Op Under Eye Brightener (Regular Size)
  • gold metallic cosmetic case

Smashbox's original Photo Finish primer is a best-seller and is great for normal to dryer skin tones. The luminizing version is definitely for someone that has close to perfect skin and who isn't too oily. It feels amazing on the skin and gives you the perfect canvas. The primer gives the skin a subtle but noticeable luminous glow. The gold warm hue gives pale winter skin a much needed boost. Makeup stays on all day but because I have an oilier t-zone, my nose did get really shiny throughout the day.

The Fusion Soft Lights (left) can be used on fair to medium skin as a luminizing blush and on med-dark (like myself) to dark it works beautifully as a highlighter. The texture is amazing and velvety soft. Photo Op (middle) is an under eye brightener I use to use religiously. I forgot how much I loved this stuff. The tip is to apply only where it is dark - avoid fine lines as it will start to settle in the lines. I love it on it's own when I'm in a rush or doing errands - doesn't give me total coverage but just enough to brighten and not look overdone. I also love layering it under my concealer for an extra brightening effect.

I LOVE the O-Gloss in Gold. I know from past reviews of the original O-Gloss some people hated it and some loved it. First, the gloss is so smooth and almost feels like a lip balm. Second, when applied on my lips it turns into a lovely shade of peachy-pink with gold shimmer. In case you didn't know, O-Glosses react to your natural body chemistry and is customized to your pH balance. It looks gorgeous on it's own or layered over your favourite lipstick for a pretty pouty effect.

Oh, and the gold makeup bag is super cute! The set is perfect to travel with and is awesome for on-the-go touch-ups. Yes, another must-add to your wish list!

Have you tried this set? Love it? Hate it? Want it?

Smashbox The Gold List retails for $49 USD and is available at Sephora locations and online at Sephora.com.

12 Days of Holiday Beauty: Side Bun With Some Holiday Sparkle!

Believe it or not, buns are actually very easy to do. Doing a quick bun can help make any outfit look even more glamorous and fun especially when you add a sparkly hair clip. Buns in general are making a comeback so whether you’re doing a classic chignon, ballerina bun, or french twist there are many ways to make it look modern and festive.

Some women hate having their hair pulled back (myself included) which is why a side bun is a great way to show off some hair while keeping it off the face. To keep it from looking too awkward or juvenile, make sure the placement of the bun is pulled slightly to the side and lower on the nape of the neck. Also, if you are wearing something asymmetrical place the bun on the side where your shoulder is bare.

Step 1: If you’re styling your hair after showering, apply a volumizing mousse at the root of the hair. Finger dry your hair until it is bone dry. Flip your hair upside down to dry it faster and to give you extra volume. If you’re styling from dry, spray a volumizing spray at the root or use a dry shampoo. The side bun will look less severe with volume at the top and when it is not pulled so close to the head.

Step 2: Curling your hair will make it easier to style into a bun. Wrap 1 inch sections of your hair around a barrel curling iron. This will create a really pretty “s” wave. Make sure the ends are completely curled and not straight. For a quicker solution, put your hair in hot rollers and take them out when your makeup is done. If you don’t have hot rollers, use regular velcro ones and heat with your blow dryer. Use your cool shot to set the curls.

Step 3: Once your curls are done, gently finger comb through your curls. Start loosely gathering your hair leaving volume at the top and positioning it to the side. Once you are satisfied with the placement, wrap a hair elastic around like you would a regular pony tail. Take a small section underneath the hair and wrap around to hide the elastic. Secure with two bobbi pins.

Step 4: Now it’s time to have fun with your hair. Because your hair is curled, you can roll it anyway you’d like. If you’d like some of the curls to show, pin the majority into a bun leaving some pieces out. If you’d like a more classic round shape, wrap the hair around following in the direction the curl falls. Cross pin until you feel the hair secure. If you like hair around your face, pull a few pieces for a messy, modern feel. Spray with an extra hold hair spray to keep the style secure.

Step 5: Add a fun, sparkly hair clip on the bun, to the side of the bun, or just behind your ear. There are a variety of hair clips to choose fun so go with one that compliments your outfit or your personality!

Would you do this hairstyle?

Holiday 2010: All I Want For Christmas Is...Kat Von D Painted Love Lipstick Set!

A lip set after my own heart! Fully pigmented, mini lipsticks all packaged in a decorative box set. If you're a fan of celebrity tattoo artist, Kat Von D, you will love her makeup line. From the packaging, logo design, the names, to the colour selection her personal style is all over this line.
L-R: Celebutard (nude peach beige), Lolita (dusty rose), Cathedral (spiced pinkish brown), Hellbent (blood red), Underage Red (bright crimson) and Rosary (darkest burgundy red)

If you're new to Kat Von D lipsticks like I am, this set is a great way to test out before buying a full size. And if you're buying for a gal pal who loves her lipstick, she will adore these minis. The set has a good range of nude, neutral and bold shades that you can wear each on its own or layer for a custom shade.

My favourites out of the set are Lolita, Cathedral, and Rosary. Celebutard (love the name) is a bit too chalky for my skin tone but I love layering it over both Lolita and Cathedral for the perfect nude lip. I love Underage for its brightness but don't prefer it on my skin tone. Hellbent or Rosary are reds I would normally reach for.

The lipsticks apply creamy and are extremely pigmented. They offer long-lasting wear as well. Another holiday set to add to your wish list!

Have you tried these lipsticks? Will you be adding this to your wish list?

Kat Von D Painted Love Lipstick Set retails for $28 USD and is available at Sephora locations or Sephora on-line.

World AIDS Day & M.A.C. - What's Your Favourite Viva Glam Lippie?

Everyday should be World Aids Day, but sometimes we just need a little reminder that more help still needs to be done in finding a cure. I love the M.A.C. Viva Glam lip products because you can buy them all year round and 100% of the selling price goes towards their M.A.C. AIDS Fund. Want even more reason to snatch these lippies up? They come in beautiful colours and different finishes - you'll be sure to find (or 2 or 3) that suit your style.
What's your favourite Viva Glam lippie? I started working at M.A.C. around the time Viva Glam V launched so this one will forever be my favourite. Plus, it looks amazing on every skin tone and all my brides love it!

Top 5 Reasons To Buy A Viva Glam Lipstick or Lipglass:
  1. Today is World AIDS Day. What better way to show your support than by buying a product that supports HIV/AIDS with 100% of the selling price directed to the M·A·C AIDS Fund?!
  2. A purchase with a tangible effect. What exactly does the $17.50 you pay for your Viva Glam lipstick do?
For men, women and children affected by HIV/AIDS in North America, one Viva Glam lipstick can pay for:

    • 8 individually tailored, nutritious home-cooked meals
    • 1 week’s supply of groceries (about 4 bags of food) for 2 clients
    • 14 blood glucose monitoring strips
    • Fuel for MANNA trucks for 37 deliveries of nutritionally sound meals
    • A Sunday meal for 5 people at the Denison Residential Housing Program in Toronto
    • 1 Hospitality Kit containing personal hygiene and grooming essentials for a client entering a housing program
    •
    • For men, women and children affected by HIV/AIDS internationally, one Viva Glam lipstick can provide:
    • 2 children with 2 meals per day at Noah’s Ark for 1 month
    • 1 pair of school shoes for a child orphaned by AIDS
    • Support and education for 5 pregnant women diagnosed with HIV/AIDS, giving them the tools to prevent transmission to their unborn child

  3.   Support the M·A·C AIDS Fund and the Viva Glam Program. Since 1994, the Viva Glam program has raised $190 Million (USD) for HIV/AIDS organizations globally. MAF offers a large number of grants to these organizations and the money helps these charities in a variety of ways. Here in Toronto, MAF donates to a few different groups, two of which (Casey House and Fife House) are hosting World AIDS Day events at which a number of M·A·C employees are volunteering. Casey House is a specialty hospital for people living with HIV/AIDS and Fife House is a homeless outreach program/residence for people living with HIV/AIDS in Toronto. M∙A∙C artists from Toronto will pitch in to help at Casey House for their annual Voices of Hope concert, and at Fife House to treat residents and clients to a spa day. Along with their skincare tips and products, M·A·C is also bringing a $50,000 check to donate to Fife House this afternoon, on behalf of the M·A·C AIDS Fund!
  4. Raise awareness. Ever get questioned about your fabulous lip colour? What better way to raise awareness about HIV/AIDS and M·A·C Viva Glam than by letting your lipstick do the talking?! Lady Gaga and Cyndi Lauper, our fabulous Viva Glam spokespeople, have a limited edition lipstick and lipglass available (photos attached) that they helped to design! This year, they are focused on raising awareness of HIV/AIDS with the female population. Forget the stereotypes. Women are more likely to become infected with HIV than men. While the overall rate of new HIV infections has slowed, the number of women infected with HIV is growing. And in every part of the world.
  5. Gifts that give back. Throughout the holiday season, there is even more that you can do to raise money for HIV/AIDS. M·A·C offers a Viva Glam lip bag and Sir Teddy, perfect stocking stuffers that support the M·A·C AIDS Fund with 100% of the selling price directed to organizations helping people living with HIV/AIDS. And don’t forget to pick up your Kids Helping Kids cards - deliver your message of holiday cheer knowing that you’re helping children all over the world that have been affected by HIV/AIDS.
Who knew lipsticks and glosses could be so powerful and make a difference??

12 Days of Holiday Beauty: Purple Nails

The holiday season is a fun time for trends so don’t be afraid to try something new. If the idea of colour on your face seems too drastic, why not try colour on your nails? If you’ve done the reds and golds, royal shimmering purples is a fun alternative! There are many purples to choose from this season so you’ll be sure to find one that you’ll love.

If your style is edgy, go for a deep almost black purple. If you love playing with trends, go for purples that look almost grey. If your style is sophisticated and classic, purpley-plums will look beautiful on you!

What do you think of purple nails? What is your go-to holiday polish?
