Beauty Review: Bright Eyes and Pouty Lips!

Benefit is known for easy-to-use fix-its to achieving that flawless face we all strive for. It's no wonder makeup artist, Carmindy (who I met and took a picture with last month at Sephora! I'll save that for another post), from TLC's "What Not To Wear" has been made the spokesperson for Benefit's Eye Bright Pencil and a few other products from the line. Carmindy has used this magical pencil time and time again on the makeover victims of "What Not To Wear" which had left them looking bright eyed and youthful.

I was curious to try this little wonder out so I picked one up and tested it as soon as I got home. Eye Bright promises to hide the I-was-partying-way-too-late-last-night look and make you appear awake and alert instantly. I dabbed the soft pink pencil in the corner of my eyes and on the outer corner just like the instructions said to. I even drew a line where my dark circles are just like Carmindy does on the show. After I blended (you don't want to overblend by the way), the end result was not pretty. The soft pink casted a grey shadow on my skin and made me look ashy! However, when I tried it on a girlfriend of mine who is fair skinned it looked wonderful! Conclusion: fab find for my fair skinned friends but not for me and anyone else who has darker skin. Maybe Benefit could create an Eye Bright in a soft peach shade for people with medium-dark to dark-skinned people? Who else is with me?? lol

I love Benefit's Lip Plump for many reasons: it's a great lip primer, fills in lines giving lips a smooth appearance, allows you to contour and shape the lips for a poutier effect without the annoying tingling sensation other lip plumpers give, and can be used to cancel redness in the lips so you can wear any lip colour your heart desires! I've used it on many women who have never been able to wear light colours because of the redness in their lips and after using Lip Plump they were hooked! I also use it on set and it keeps the lip colour on all day without flaking or getting cakey. A little goes a long way and you only need 3 little dabs on the lips. Pat into lips and wait a few minutes before applying lip colour. It's a definite fab find for anyone! Happy shopping!

Beauty Review: LORAC's Hidden Gems!

I first fell in love with LORAC when the first Sephora store opened in the Toronto Eaton Center a few years ago. My first purchase from LORAC was the holiday gift set of the mini Lip Polishes that smelled of vanilla and peppermint. They are the cutest little glosses ever and I used to carry all of them in my purse because they were that small! Last month, I was on the hunt for the perfect peachy gloss without all the stickiness and I found it! I don't know why I had never heard of it before but LORAC's Gloss Stick in Sheer Peach is AMAZING and one of my new favourite finds!! It gives your lips enough colour, high shine, and keeps your lips feeling soft and smooth for hours. It also has a nice peachy scent. The Gloss Stick comes in two other colours Sheer Berry and Sheer Plum and a clear one for pure shine.

Another fabulous find is LORAC's Oil Free Neutralizer which neutralizes redness, conceals blemishes, undereye or blemish discolourations, or can be used on its own as a tint. Ali from ChickAdvisor.com, bought this for me to use on her during the podcast shoot! It neutralized the red areas without making her face that unflattering green that other correctors do while at the same time controlling her oily areas. It also was a great base for her foundation and lasted through each 12 hour shoot!

Nothing's getting the boot tonight! Happy shopping!

Beauty Review: MAC Attack!!

MAC is known for launching new lines every month and my favourite launches of the year are always the summer launches! Here are some fabulous finds that have made a home into my kit and some that were just "meh". There really wasn't any that should be given the boot but you be the judge!

Fabulous Find #1: A few posts back I had written about new product launches at MAC. I was pretty skeptical about the new Slimshine Lipsticks because I thought they'd be no different than the Lustre lipsticks. I was wrong! I LOVE them especially Lovey-Dovey (mid-tone terracotta with bronze pearl) which is one of my favourite new colours for the summer. They are actually ultra moisturizing than the Lustre lipsticks and the colour payoff is sheer but still noticeable. It gives you high shine like a gloss without the stickiness and the colour actually stayed on for a few hours. Plus, it didn't give me that nasty crust on the inside of the lip. One of my readers, Jannie, who is also a fan asked if these are a limited edition and as it stands now they are. Word is still out on whether these will be permanent or not. If it does well it will most likely stay and lets hope it does! So I say stock up now just in case! I think I'll have to also pick up Bare, Ardour, Pink d'Lush, Ultra Elegant, Funshine and Urgent!

Fabulous Find #2: is MAC's Prep + Prime Face Protect SPF 50. I think sunscreen should be apart of every woman's beauty regime because it not only protects you from skin cancer but it helps keep your skin looking young and wrinkle free! This products goes on soo smooth and my makeup blends onto my skin with perfection! I actually haven't used a primer in a while and now that I'm using one again I see a total difference in how my makeup goes on and how long it lasts. The primer even prevents oiliness and kept my skin glowing in all the right places. If you use a primer anyways, you might as well use one that has an SPF.

Fabulous Find #3: Lately I've been obsessed with the colour orange and it has since become one of my fave colours for this summer! I was excited to see Fireball Nail Lacquer from MAC's Moonbathe collection. I love wearing funky bright colours on my toes and this orange does not disappoint! It's a vivid tangerine orange with gold and orange pearl and looks great against bronzey skin. If you're afraid to try colour on your face then your toes is the perfect place to get a little crazy!

Fabulous Find #4: I've always loved MAC's Viva Glam line especially because it goes to a great cause: finding a cure for AIDS. Every cent goes towards the MAC Aid's Fund so you'll never feel guilty buying more than one. Over the years MAC has used many amazing celebrities to promote the Viva Glam lip products including the most recent edition buxom burlesque entertainer Dita Von Teese (who visited my friends over at the MAC store on Bloor St. during Fashion Cares!). I love all the colours from the line, but my favourite colour would have to be Viva Glam V. I recently used it at a wedding on the bride and her bridal party and forgot how amazing this colour was! It's a nice neutral pink that suits almost every skin tone and changes colour depending on what lip liner you pair with it. It goes on sheer and has a nice light texture to it. It's a definite must in every woman's makeup bag!

"Meh" #1: When I heard about the Tendertone Lip Balms with SPF 12 I was ecstatic because as most of you know I have a HUGE obsession with tinted lip balms! I was expecting them to be almost similar to their regular Tinted Lip Conditioners, but I was wrong. The colours are beautiful but the texture I hate! It goes on smooth but has a sticky texture which surprised me because the Tinted Lip Conditioners aren't sticky at all. The colour was also a little too sheer for my taste and would have liked it to be a bit stronger. When I was in the store I only tried it on my hand and it didn't feel sticky and the colour payoff seemed great. Well, I made the mistake of buying four of them and I hate to return things unless I get an allergic reaction. I don't mind Hush, Hush because it leaves a nice shimmer on the lips or Purring, a beautiful tangerine with pearl that actually shows on my lips. Oh well, I guess I can use it for protection under my other many lip products!

"Meh" #2": Ok, so I wasn't blown away by their summer collection Moonbathe. The colours are gorgeous but it's kind of like "been there, done that". I received Sunmetal lipstick, Cresent lipglass, Claire de Lune and Cosmic eyeshadows, Molten Sol LiquidLast Liner, and Afterdusk blush. The lip colours and eyeshadows are pretty similar to colours in the regular line just with different names and packaging. I do like the Molten Sol (rich gold with intense metallic) LiquidLast Liner because it's such a cool colour to wear as a liner and the Afterdusk blush (sheer neutral pink with gold pearl) gives such a pretty shimmer and isn't a colour I've seen yet in the regular line. The good news is that the next few launches will be pretty amazing so stay tuned!

That rounds out my fabulous finds and "meh" list. If you've tried any of these products I'd love to hear if it was a fabulous find or not. Happy shopping!

Makeup Artist of the Month: Liset

Many people have asked me where I draw my inspiration from when doing a creative or photo shoot and one of my main inspirations is other makeup artists like Liset who is based in LA. We connected through Model Mayhem and I fell in love with her work instantly! She's one of those artists who has set the bar for me and I'm sure other artists alike. Beauty Review: Large Pores? Forgetta 'bout It!

Enlarged pores and dull, flaky skin can discourage any makeup junkie from applying her trusted foundation, but it doesn't have to be that way! The lovely people at Estee Lauder sent me their Idealist Pore Minimizing Skin Refinisher a month ago and I have faithfully been using it every morning before my daily moisturizer. I'll be honest, I don't have large pores to begin with but they're visible enough to bother me. I do, however, suffer from dull flaky skin on occassions. Here is what it promised:
"In just four weeks, this state of the art, fast-acting treatment provides Estee Lauder's most dramatic skin resurfacing benefits to date; significantly reducing the appearance of enlarged pores and delivering soft, smooth radiantly healthy looking skin."
Interesting facts about pores: Dark clogged pores or blackheads is due to an accumulation of impurities and sebum which become dark when oxidized by the air. When pores are clogged, natural sebum secretion is blocked and unable to flow outside the pore, resulting in swelling of accumulated sebum within the pore shaft which causes the pore to stretch.

Effectiveness: After using Idealist for four weeks, I have noticed an improvement in my skin. Prior to this, my skin was in the worst shape ever and I'm not sure if it was due to allergies or from another product I was testing out. Whatever it was, Idealist couldn't have come at a more perfect time. My pores were small before but are practically invisible now. The texture of my skin is very soft and smooth. My blackheads were embarrassingly visible on my nose but now are barely noticeable and have prevented further blackheads from reproducing. Idealist promises a more even skin tone, but it's not as even as I'd like it yet. However, this could be due to the sun and my face not getting an even colour. The product is light in texture, does not clog the pores, and feels velvety soft when applied to the skin. It's even a great primer for makeup! Overall, on a scale of 1-10 I'd give it an 8.5 and would definitely recommend it especially to people who have oily skin or suffer from large pores. A 30 ml bottle is $63 and a 50 ml bottle is $93. Hey, it's probably cheaper than laser resurfacing! Happy shopping!

Estee Lauder Idealist Pore Minimizing Skin Refinisher is available from all Estee Lauder counters nationwide July 2007. Stay tuned for my review of Estee Lauder shadows, high lighters, and lip products!

Confessions of A Makeup Junkie

#1. I probably use 10% of my kit on myself!

It still amazes me how much makeup I've collected over the years and it still keeps growing! My kit has gone through a lot of purging and "spring cleaning" but somehow it has managed to graduate from a makeup case to a suitcase! The funny thing is I only use a tiny fraction of my kit on myself, but I like the fact that I can change up my look whenever I want to. When I think about giving away products it always comes back to, "well, I might use it one day for a shoot or for this person..." Ah, the life of a makeup junkie! I'd love to hear confessions from all my makeup junkies out there!

Beauty Reviews: Estee Lauder, Nars, Cargo, Lise Watier, LORAC, MAC, Aveeno, Make Up Forever, L'oreal, Revlon, Benefit, Oh My!

I deeply apologize to all my Makeup Junkies out there for my lack of beauty reviews lately! It's been a busy few months that I've hardly had time to review all the new products I've received or bought! As soon as I get the chance I will review away. There were some products that had me swooning and some that had me booing and some that were just meh. I can't wait to share all my fabulous finds with you all! Until then, I would love to hear about some new fabulous finds that have nestled into your makeup bag(s) or some that were given the boot! Stay tuned and happy shopping!

Makeup 101: Bridal Beauty Tips Part 2

Now that we've got the formalities out of the way, lets get to the fun stuff! When it comes to makeup on your wedding day you want to be able to look back 10 or 20 years from now without any regrets. I always recommend that brides choose classic and timeless looks. Save the bright shimmery shades for any other day or better yet your bachelorette party! Whether you're looking for a look to show the makeup artist or doing your own makeup, here are some beautiful looks that are easy to re-create and beautiful year after year.

1. Classic Old Hollywood: This is one of my favourite looks that never goes out of style and one of the easiest to re-create. It's all about defined brows, flawless skin, bold lips, and flirty eyes. Before applying any makeup, make sure your skin is clean and moisturized. Wait for about 5 minutes after applying moisturizer to let it set and soak into the skin before putting on your base. Prep skin with a primer (one with an SPF is even better) like M.A.C.'s Prep + Prime Face Protect SPF 50 or Lorac's aquaPrime Oil Free Makeup Primer to keep makeup on longer.

Your foundation should last long and not look powdery or caked on. Your skin should look radiant and fresh and not shiny and oily looking. For wedding makeup I recommend the following foundations: oily skin I like MAC's Studio Fix Fluid SPF 15 or Make Up For Ever's Mat Velvet + Matifying Foundation, normal or combination skin I love Face Atelier's Ultra foundation or MAC's Face and Body Foundation, and for dry skin try Bobbi Brown's Moisture Rich Foundation or Bobbi Brown's Luminous Moisturizing Foundation. Use concealer only where needed: under eye, around the nose, and obvious blemishes. Set with a loose powder and touch up shiny skin with blotting papers throughout the day.

Use an eye primer or base before applying shadow so that it will not crease or fade. I like using MAC's Eye Paints as a base in any of the neutral colours. Use shadow colours in light shades like champagne, silver or taupe. Benefit's new Creaseless Cream Shadow/Liner comes in many beautiful shades including a black one which can be used as the black liner. Finish off the eyes with lots of waterproof mascara from Maybelline and fake lashes in #4 from MAC (optional). To define the brows, use a slanted brush and brow powder for a natural effect like Benefit's Brow Zings which comes with a brow wax to keep in place, brow powder, tweezers, and slanted brush.

For blush, I would add a little more colour than the picture because you don't want to look pale. Go for neutral tones in browny pinks or rose. I like powder blushes from Bobbi Brown's in Almond (toasted almond) or Tawny (medium pinky brown). This look is all about a strong, bold lip in red. And since this can get messy with all the kissing you'll be doing you want to make sure it stays put. I like Nars' Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Forbidden Red because it also acts as a lip liner. If you'd prefer a lipstick then make sure to get a lip liner to prevent the colour from bleeding like MAC's lip pencil in Brick. If the red in the picture is too strong for you opt for more berry-reds or reds in a sheer form. Make Up For Ever has a great lip matifyer called Matte Lip that you can apply over any lipstick or gloss with long-lasting effects. This is a great option for people who don't normally buy matte lipsticks. For even more kiss-proof lips try Make Up For Ever's Lip Plus Lipstick Sealer.

2. Youthful but Classic: This is today's version of the Classic look just more youthful and softer. The brows are still softly defined, skin is still flawless but is slightly luminescent, the eyes are warmer and not as defined, cheeks are rosier, and lips have a pop of colour but in sheerer tones of red and are not strongly defined. Use a nice gold shadow on the lid and in corner of eyes like MAC's Eye Paint in Base Light. Smudge a brown shadow like MAC's Espresso into the upper lash line and outer crease. Load on the waterproof mascara and add some falsies to the outer corner. Sweep a soft pink powder blush onto the cheeks like MAC's Dame (one of my favourite pink blushes!) or Benefit's Dandelion highlighting powder. Finish the look off with a juicy pout in MAC's Venetian Lustreglass or L'oreal's Colour Juice Stick in Cherry Freeze (Ali from ChickAdvisor.com had this in her makeup bag and we used it on her podcast shoot!). Be sure to line lips in a corresponding shade to prevent feathering or bleeding but blend really well with a lip brush so it does not look too defined. Wearing a lip primer is a good idea as this will also keep your lip colour on all day. I use Benefit's Lip Plump all the time to smooth out lines and to prep the lips before applying colour. For extra lasting effects apply Make Up Forever's Lip Plus Lipstick Sealer as mentioned in #1.

3. Classic Bridal Beauty: This is a look that looks good on almost anyone and can be used any time of the day. Brown tones on the eyes, pink rosy cheeks and a pink pout. Check out Bobbi Brown Cosmetics.com for tips and instructions on how to re-create this look. She has even created a custom bridal palette!

4. Looks for Darker Skin Tones: I love doing smokey looks or deep cocoa and amber colours on darker skinned women. Darker tones can get away with doing a smokey look on the eyes because it doesn't look overdone as it would on someone with fairer skin. Check out Iman Cosmetics for tips and products. There are some amazing looks on there!

That rounds out my list for my favourite bridal beauty looks! I hope all you brides out there were able to get some ideas and helpful tips. Remember, in the end you want to look like you but only better on your wedding day. Congratulations and all the best on your journey to wedded bliss!
