My Spring/Summer Must-Haves!

The springtime has got to be my favourite season of the year. I can't help but feel rejuvenated and renewed after a sluggish cold winter. The air is fresher, flowers are in bloom, colours are brighter, the temperature is just perfect enough to wear a light spring coat, and the days are longer. I'll be honest, when it comes down to it the spring/summer fashions and new make-up collections are what really get me going. Here are my spring/summer must-haves for fashion and make-up!

Beauty:

1. A good moisturizer with an SPF like Korres Suncare Set which comes complete with Watermelon Sunscreen Face Cream SPF 30, Yogurt Cooling Gel, and a Pomegranate Balancing Moisturizer. If you have redness try Murad's Redness Therapy Correcting Moisturizer SPF 15 and for oily/acne prone skin try Murad's Oil-Free Sunblock SPF 30.

2. Tinted moisturizer or sheer foundation with an SPF. Try Sue Devitt's Microquatic Pro-Marine Tinted Moisturizer SPF 30 which is the first to come in a convenient compact that I know of. If you prefer something with more coverage try Smashbox's new High Definition Healthy FX Foundation SPF 15.

3. A golden based bronzer. Many people have a hard time finding a good bronzer. I've been using my Hoola bronzer by Benefit for the past couple of years now and it's never failed me. I like it because it doesn't have a shimmer and works on just about every skin tone. Darker skin tones I recommend using MAC's Bronzer in Refined Deeper Bronze. If you want a fool proof bronzed look try Tarte's Sunburst Beaded Bronzing Lotion. The bronzing beads burst on contact with skin and gives the right dose of a bronzed glow. It's oil-free and doesn't feel greasy on your skin.

4. Give your cheeks a pop of colour with fun spring hues. I love anything from gels, stains, creams, and powders when it comes to blush. Go with something sheer or go with something shimmery - whatever tickles your fancy. For fair skin go for soft candy pinks, medium skin corals or peaches, and for darker skin try deep apricots or if you're daring fuchsia pinks. Skip blush if it's not your thing and use your bronzer to give your cheeks a sunkissed glow.

5. Waterproof and smudge proof mascara!

6. Go with bronzy hues for your lids like Pop Beauty's new Lid Bronzer eye shadow palette. It comes with easy-to-follow instructions on how to achieve the perfect bronzy lids! I love also love sheer seafoam or turquoise shades for the summer time. Try MAC's eye shadows in Surreal or Shimmermoss.

7. Your lips need sun protection too. If you want a balm with a bit of colour my all time favourite is still MAC's Tinted Lip Conditioner SPF 15. For spring/summer trends try Soothing Beige for a nice nude and for a pop of colour go with Fuchsia Fix or Gentle Coral.

8. Gloss is a must-have for every season. I'm loving all the new spring colours from MAC's Plushglass glosses.

9. Since spring/summer is all about exposing some skin you want to make sure it's in the best condition possible. Exfoliate with a body scrub like The Body Shop's yummy Coconut Body Scrub.

10. Keep those feet looking soft and pretty especially during sandal season. No one wants to see your cracked, crusty, unpolished feet! Scrub those feet with The Body Shop's Peppermint Cooling Pumice Foot Scrub and follow with The Body Shop's Peppermint Cooling Foot Rescue Treatment. Paint those toes in some vibrant shades like OPI's Brighter By The Dozen collection in Bright Lights - Big Colour, Atomic Orange, Totally Tangerine, and if you're daring Azure For Sure and Need Sunglasses?, a bright yellow (this would look great on fingers too!).

11. I'm not a big fan of fake and bake or self-tanners (I'm too lazy to apply a self-tanner properly). I like quick, easy, and natural body bronzers like Jergen's Natural Glow Daily Moisturizer. There's no streaking or orange colouration and it keeps you moisturized at the same time.

Fashion:

1. A white spring jacket for those breezy days and nights like this military-inspired jacket from Old Navy or a belted trench for something dressier like this one also from Old Navy.

2. A white or tan purse like this inexpensive hobo bag from Old Navy or like my dream purse the "Tanya" from Marc Jacobs.

3. A really fun summer dress like this one from American Eagle.

4. Stock up on some flip flops from Old Navy for some fun in the sun at the beach or running day to day errands. I also love flats like these cute little peep toes from Urban Outfitters and wedge sandals like these ones from Aldo. For those hot summer nights out for drinks I like a hot platform sandal like this one also from Aldo.

5. Tanks! I love getting tanks in all different colours from just about anywhere: Walmart, Old Navy, American Apparel if I feel like splurging, but nothing beats good ol' Hanes wife beaters!

6. I'm a jeans girl and wear everything with jeans. A good pair of jeans are always a must-have. I love Citizens of Humanity jeans from Over the Rainbow and my jeans from The Gap for curvy girls.

7. A girl has always got to have jewelry. I love anything from beaded chunky jewelry to wooden bamboo inspired pieces. Right now I'm loving anything in yellow.

8. A hot pair of sunglasses. I love aviators like these ones from Gucci.

That rounds out my fashion and beauty list! What are you spring/summer must-haves? Happy shopping!

Make-up 101: Beauty Care During Pregnancy and Post-Pregnancy Part 2.

Now that you've gone through 24+ hours of labour (or 4 hours - damn you lucky ones!) and given birth to your precious little baby, you're exhausted, emotional, and thankful you and the baby made it out in one piece. During your pregnancy you were treated like a queen, never having to lift a finger, showered with compliments, and people never thought twice about you eating a whole pizza by yourself. Now your close friends and family members are pushing you to the side and fighting over who gets to hold the baby. The scenario may not be quite like that but that's what it feels like to you.

My first three months of motherhood was a roller coaster ride full of many ups but many downs as well. Some of you may have been lucky enough to not go through what is known as the post pardum "baby blues". About 85% of women experience some symptoms of "baby blues" like I did. There were a lot of days I didn't feel like showering let alone put make-up on to see people. It's a gross fact but it was true. I was exhausted every day and so irritable that any little thing would set me off. I would only leave the house when I absolutely needed to. Everything from cleaning my face to brushing my teeth took so much time and energy from me. I cried a few times because my old clothes still didn't fit and I was so sick of wearing maternity wear.

The great news is that you do start to feel like yourself again like I did when my baby was 3 months old. It was like I was in a trance and all of a sudden snapped out of it. I booked a hair wax mani/pedicure appointment, bought new clothes, new make-up, and new shoes right away. I wanted to be around people again. However, even at the 3 month mark I was still having to get up every 1.5-2 hours to feed him which didn't leave me much time for myself. Here are some tips that helped get me through those tired times:

1. Sleep when the baby sleeps - even if you have visitors over. They will understand you need to catch your sleep any way you can. By sleeping, you'll build up your energy to be able to continue a beauty routine and other important things like getting out of the house with the baby.

2. EAT and drink lots of fluids! I was always on a weird schedule and never ate at the proper times but eating is very important in helping sustain your energy. If you're breastfeeding, eating is also important not only for milk production but gives you the fuel you need to persevere through what can be a trying time for both baby and mother. Also, breastfeeding burns a lot of calories so you need to eat to balance it out. Even if an apple is all you can manage it's better than nothing. I was lucky enough to have my mother-in-law and mother bring or cook us food that we could freeze for later on. Eat foods that are quick and easy to prepare. Drink water or sugar free juices to keep your body and skin hydrated.

3. Always start your day with a shower or try to fit it in there somewhere. I cherished my showers because it was the only time I had to myself. It was soothing and calming. I always felt refreshed and energized after my showers. Yummy smelling body washes are great pick-me-ups.

4. Just because you've had the baby and your tummy is returning to normal size doesn't mean you can stop moisturizing. To help prevent or minimize your stretch marks you still need to moisturize. Since I was also breastfeeding, I was losing a lot of fluids so my skin was always dry. Moisturizing along with drinking fluids will help combat this problem.

5. It's understandable if you don't have the energy to put on make-up but it will make you feel better on the inside when you look great on the outside. Here is a 5-10 minute make-up routine that will get you ready before your baby's next feeding!
a. Even out your skin tone with a concealer or tinted moisturizer with an SPF.
b. Apply loose powder where needed.
c. Bronzer will give you a healthy glow. Apply where the sun naturally hits you: cheeks, nose, chin, and forehead.
d. For colour use 3 in 1 products that don't require a brush like Nars' The Multiple. You can use it as a shadow, blush and lip colour. If you're a neutral girl South Beach is a beautiful shimmering apricot that gives just enough colour without looking overdone. If you like a little colour try Maldives (pink champagne shimmer) or Riviera (sheer pink). There are other quick and easy products that don't require brushes like cream-to-powder-shadows, or cream-to-powder blushes, gel stains for lips and cheeks.
e. Curl lashes and apply mascara. It opens up your eyes and makes you look more awake even if you really aren't!
f. Swipe on some gloss or lip balm. I'm still addicted to tinted lip balms and creamy matte finishes or stains because they don't kiss off on my baby's face (and I kiss him about a million times a day!).

Voila you're done and looking damn good for someone that's just had a baby! Remember, taking of yourself will make you better at taking care of your baby. That was a hard lesson I had to force myself to learn. If the baby blues has caused you to lose touch with friends, family or your significant other make an effort to reconnect with them again. It will make you feel normal to engage in everyday conversations especially since all you can think about is the baby (and of course the baby should come first). Another important tip is to take at least an hour a day for yourself whether it be soaking in the tub, listening to music, watching tv, shopping, reading a good book or meeting up with a friend. And lastly, a happy mom makes for a happy baby!

Make-up 101: Beauty Care During Pregnancy and Post-Pregnancy

Above: This was me at 5/6 months prego. My assistant manager, Chrissy, who is an amazing artist, painted my belly for our Spring make-up launch.

This post is dedicated to all my yummy-mummies and yummy-mummies-to-be make-up junkies! Ever since the birth of my son, I've had several people close to me give birth or announce they will be expecting. As you can imagine, I'm so excited to have people my age that I am close to have babies especially since my husband and I were the first ones to become parents out of our circle of friends.

As a new-mom-to-be you'll find as you go farther into your pregnancy the amazing changes your body will go through. It's so exciting to see week after week your belly get rounder, and then a few more weeks you start to see your belly move, and after that you're belly will be so big you won't be able to see your feet! Not only does your belly change, but your hair and skin change too. Every woman that has had a child will tell you that their hair was in the most amazing condition it has ever been in. My hair was so shiny and so full that my co-workers started to ask every week if I was going to the salon. During pregnancy your hair stops shedding which is why it looks so full and lush and all the vitamins and good food you eat contribute to the healthy shine.

If only pregnancy could co-operate with the skin like it does with the hair. When women are hormonal (like when our monthly friend pays a visit) we breakout, so you can just imagine the bad breakouts pregnant women get especially during the first trimester. The good news is that when your body starts to adjust to all the new changes, your hormones start to calm down and those pesky pimples start to disappear. I was probably one of the luckier pregnant women that only had a few zits here and there.

A week goes by and your skin is looking a lot better but then you start to notice dark patches on your face. At first you think you're seeing wrong, but as the days go by the patches get darker and darker. This is known as the "mask of pregnancy" or the medical term "chloasma". It usually is more noticeable in darker skinned women. When I was pregnant my blemishes got darker, my nose and around my nose got darker, upper lip and forehead and even my beauty marks got darker. I also noticed that my armpits got darker so I was always self conscious when I wore tank tops and lifted my arms to apply make-up. My skin not only started looking different it also started feeling different. My belly was itchy all the time and this was because my skin was stretching to accommodate my big belly (people thought I was having twins!). To pregnant women everywhere here are some skin tips that helped me through my pregnancy:

1. Don't scratch your belly no matter how itchy it is (trust me I had to slap my own hand from scratching the hell out of it)! As soon as I would feel itchy, I would apply Palmers' Cocoa Butter Formula Massage Lotion for Stretch Marks. They have a variety of stretch mark creams and lotions to choose from which you can purchase from your local drugmart, maternity store, or Babies R' Us. I also carried The Body Shop's Cocoa Butter Body Stick in my purse (which they no longer carry! Boo!) which saved me from a lot of red scratch marks on my tummy. Palmers has a massage cream that comes in a convenient tube which can easily fit into your purse. Apply them religiously to prevent stretch marks.

2. Because your skin is more susceptible to skin damage during pregnancy, there is no better time than when you're pregnant to wear a moisturizer with an SPF of at least 30. I think everyone should wear SPF products daily anyways to prevent skin cancer. Apply it even if it isn't sunny because the UV rays can still penetrate your skin. Try an inexpensive drugstore brand like Neurtrogena's Healthy Defense SPF 30 Daily Moisturizer.

3. Even out your skin tone with a lightweight concealer with SPF if the discoloration is light or a creamier version with an SPF if your discolouration is dark. I found although my skin became darker in certain areas I was able to get away with using MAC's Select Moisturecover. It's lightweight and blends really nicely into the skin. It gave me enough coverage and matched my natural skin colour. If you need something heavier I would suggest MAC's Studio Finish Concealer Palette SPF 35 because you can mix and match to your specific needs. If you're skin tone is pretty much even (damn you!) use a tinted moisturizer with an SPF.

4. Remember that although you may feel like your body is not yours or your growing belly is giving you the "I'm too fat to fit my old clothes" blues, your curviness is sexy and beautiful! I was always told that I looked glowy and radiant (it really was sweat that was making me glow!). Pamper yourself at least once a week even if it's just putting your feet up on some pillows. Get your man/woman to massage your legs, back, arms, shoulders and feet (pretty much everywhere!) with the most luxurious body lotion you own. Doll yourself up every now and then (when you're not busy peeing or eating!) Take pictures of your belly as it grows so you can look back on your progress. Be proud of your belly - after all you are carrying the most precious cargo!

Stay tuned for the continuation of Post-Pregnancy Beauty Care in my next post! Pass this on to any of your girlfriends who are pregnant or are new moms! :)

Beauty News: Oh How Plush Your Lips Are! New Colours for MAC Plushglass!

When the whole cosmetic industry was busy launching plumping lip products one after the other, MAC was busy perfecting their sought after plumping gloss Plushglass. Apparently over time, the gloss is supposed to help plump your lips naturally. I haven't used it long enough to know whether this is true or not, but I like the fact that it has a subtle tingly feeling rather than a burning sensation like Duwop's Venom lip gloss. If you just want to give your lips a slight pouty effect rather than looking like you just got lip injections, this is a great gloss for you. Plus, it has a yummy vanilla-coconut scent and comes in beautiful colours. MAC's new line of Plushglasses come in beautiful hues and are just in time for the spring and summer. My favourite and one I'll have to pick up is Oh-oh!, a rusted orange with gold pearl. This may be my new favourite summer colour. Pair this with a glowy bronzed face, shimmery gold or bronze shadow, loads of mascara, and you're set for a day of shopping or a night out on the town! Happy shopping!

Beauty Review: Never Accept Ordinary (NAO) Ladies!

"Never Accept Ordinary" is a great way to live your life. You'll never settle for less than you deserve right? And of course make-up junkies want only the best! Well, I've had the pleasure of trying out a new cosmetic line courtesy of my cousin called NAO Never Accept Ordinary. Celebrity make-up artist Jeannie Mai is the spokesperson for the fun and vibrant line. The line is perfect for anyone who loves to have fun with make-up and isn't afraid to stand out from the crowd. Whether you prefer vibrant glittery eyes or if natural hues are more your taste this line has colours for every woman that wants to bring out her inner beauty.

I am a big fan of their Liquid Lip Colour and Lip Gloss. All NAO lip products have a yummy apricot scent. The Liquid Lip Colour went on like a dream. It goes on like a stain but has a slight shine to it and is super moisturizing. It didn't make my lips feel dry at all and the staying power is like no other! It's highly pigmented and goes on so rich and smooth. Rock Star is a beautiful deep cherry colour and would go perfect with a bronzy face in the summer time. You can wear it intense or dab it on with your finger for a softer look like I did. You can apply the Lip Gloss over top for a more glossy finish. The glosses give you the perfect amount of colour - not too sheer and not to thick. It's not sticky and is drenched with vegetable-based emollients and vitamin E. My favourite colour is Afterglow, a sheer watermelon pink perfect for spring and summer. The loose shimmer powder in Diva Dust is a gorgeous pink champagne colour that can be applied on the eyes, cheeks, and decolletage to give you a radiant glow. It blends nicely into the skin and feels soft and velvety to the touch.

When I saw the prices I was a little surprised at how expensive the products were. The glosses are $20.90 (CAD), Liquid Lip Colour is $26.10, and the Diva Dust is $30.75 to name a few. I had never even heard of the brand until my cousin introduced it to me and figured the prices would be fairly reasonable. However, I fell in love with their lip products and might be tempted to buy a few. The colours are beautiful and playful a combination I love! If you check out the rest of the NAO make-up line a lot of the products were designed around what professional make-up artists use and the quality of course is definitely not the ordinary.

Final thoughts: I always love trying new cosmetic lines and I especially love lines that make you feel beautiful inside and out. The NAO philosophy to Never Accept Ordinary can be applied to all areas of our life. Do you always want to live in the same footsteps walking the same route everyday?? The line is designed to make your inner goddess shine and dares you to try something new. The adorable names on the gloss like "It Girl" or "Enchantress/Temptress" on the shadow duos will remind you each time of the sensational woman you are! If no one else will say it at least you can count on your favourite gloss to say it. I'm definitely interested in trying a few more products from the line, but I'm not so sure it will replace my love for Nars! Happy shopping you make-up diva you!

Beauty Icon of the Month: Material Girl Madonna

I know it's nearly the end of March but it could not be complete without my beauty icon of the month: Madonna. Why her and and why this month? As a little girl I would watch her videos memorizing every gesture she made and wished desperately I could be in a pink dress while gorgeous men carried me down red carpeted stairs. My younger brother (he's going to hate me for airing this) and I used to prance and sing around the house "Open your heart to me baby!". She gave me my first sense of what sexuality and sensuality was at a young age even though I didn't fully understand it at the time. In my "tweens", my cousin and I would lock ourselves in her room, turn up "Papa Don't Preach", and lip sync using our brushes as mics (you know you all did it too!). My best friend and I were obsessed with her when Truth or Dare came out and watched it religiously. We were in love with her platinum blond hair, contrasting defined dark brown eyebrows, Marilyn Monroe beauty mark, and red lips. For the summer of '91 all we wore was red lipstick which we were scolded on a daily basis.

Madonna is a true chameleon and has reinvented herself over and over again while maintaining her superstar status. She went from blond pop tart, blond sexpot, dark raven beauty, ethereal goddess, to understated elegance. She's done it all - singer, actress, motherhood, fashion muse, and now fashion designer for a clothing collection at H&M and all the while juggling it with finesse. While some celebrities seem to lash out and lose control (i.e. Britney) when faced with scrutiny in the public eye, Madonna has managed to stay on top ignoring the nay sayers and sticking to her guns. She's a smart business woman and loving mother and looks damn good for 48!

Whenever I think of Madonna I can't help but get nostalgic and she's not even that old! I thought she would be the perfect choice for March not only because her clothing line hit H&M this month but also because I just turned 28 last week and she's been apart of almost all 28 years! In my eyes, Madonna is a true beauty who has influenced our perception of beauty in one way or another. She is a woman who is not afraid to be herself or say what she feels and that alone is beautiful.

Beauty News: H&M Summer Make-up Line to Hit Stores!

H&M is not just a clothing line with cool accessories anymore but they will soon carry their own make-up line starting this summer! The line will include a bronzing stick, brush, powder in a pretty make-up case and eyeshadow in a box, a make-up palette with ten eye shadow colours ranging from bronzy browns to coral pinks which also holds a shimmery highlighter, natural brown mascara, creamy beige pink and rose lip colours, and a matching nail varnish or French manicure! The collection will also include body care products and accessories such as brushes, make-up and toiletry bags.

H&M has always been known for its trendy remakes of high fashion clothes at affordable prices. I love how H&M has taken the next step by recruiting designers like Stella McCartney, Victor and Rolf, and now singers (??) like Madonna to create clothing lines for their brand. It's genius marketing and now they're venturing into the world of beauty. I wonder if they'll have top make-up artists create a collection for them like someone by the name of PAT MCGRATH!! Yes, she is the creator behind the new collections of Cover Girl and Max Factor but those brands have a certain look I'm sure she has to stay within. H&M, however, she'd be able to create whatever she wanted! Anyways, I'm getting carried away now!

I've always loved how reasonably priced H&M clothes were mind you the quality is not always the greatest, so I'm curious to see how their make-up line will compare. The press release didn't give an exact date but I assume it will probably be sometime in May/June. I guess we'll all have to wait until then to try/buy the new collection. Happy shopping!

Beauty News: Sephora Sale for All Make-up Junkies!

Could it be?? A sale at Sephora's and up to 75% off?? Yes, that's right make-up junkies! It's really rare when high-end make-up brands go on sale especially at Sephora! If you buy online I think it applies to the US and Canada but I'm not sure if it applies in Sephora stores across Canada. FYI, some of the brands on sale are not carried in Canadian Sephora stores like Paula Dorf and Alison Raffaele. Hope this bit of information put a smile on your face like it did mine! Happy shopping!

Update: Rachel McAdams on the Cover of Elle Magazine's April Issue!

A few posts ago I had asked if anyone knew the story behind Rachel's pink streak of hair. Jannie, one of my wonderful readers, was kind of enough to write in. Apparently she dyed it because she wanted a change and not for a movie role. Some celebrities probably would have opted for something typical like getting bangs or dying it dark brown or fiery red. I think it's pretty cool of her to go for something a little out of the ordinary. Thanks again for the inside scoop Jannie! You rock!

Model Diva Behaviour!

Who coined the phrase, "I don't wake up for less than $10,000 a day"? It would be the stunningly gorgeous Linda Evangelista and fellow Canadian. It's a ridiculous amount of money but if you are at the status Linda was then why not? When you're a supermodel that's worked your way to the top then you can demand whatever you want no matter how ridiculous it sounds.

In my last post I had said I would dish on two models from the NAM Modeling Agency who modeled for the Jean Paul Gaultier Party on Friday who shall remain nameless (besides I can't remember their names!). It's no secret that Canadian models are a favourite in the fashion industry because they're all sweet as pie. However, that was not the case at the JPG fashion party on Friday. My philosophy has always been to treat people with respect and you will receive it in return, but unfortunately in the fashion industry you sometimes have to be a little ruthless to get any type of respect. When I do a job, I treat everyone the same no matter who you are - no better or no worse. I strongly believe whether the job is paid or not to do your best work and to ALWAYS be professional! Most of the young models I've worked with in the past have always been professional and nice. One as young as 13 blew me away because she clearly knew how to carry herself in a professional matter.

Friday night I was shocked - ok maybe a little surprised at a particular model's behaviour that I did makeup on because it definitely was not justified. Let me tell you, this chick thought she was Kate Moss in the flesh and even then it's not right to treat people like dirt! She was rude, inconsiderate, immature, and unprofessional. Yes, she's only 17 but you should know better by that age.

Strike #1 was: I had dropped a sponge I was using on her and I went to pick it up to throw it in the garbage. As soon as she saw me bending down to pick it up she snapped at me and said, "Um can you not use that sponge on my face please?" I rebutted with, "Don't worry I practice hygiene." I took a deep breath and continued with a smile on my face. I tried to give her the benefit of the doubt and figured she doesn't know how I work so I let that slide.

Strike #2 was: She kept rolling her eyes and sighing like I was inconveniencing her by doing her make-up. I kept thinking, "I am here to do a job so just let me do it!".

Strike #3 was: Another model friend walked over and they bitched about how dark the liner was and that they were so glad they could wash it off after. At that point I wanted to jab my model in the eye with my brush. When you are a model you do not have a say on what the looks should be. Any make-up artist will agree with me when I say we do not care what makes you look good(unless of course it is a personal shoot for you). Your job is to be quiet, look pretty, and sell the clothes. Do you think Pat McGrath consults with the models first before she creates a look? Hell no! It doesn't matter if you think the look doesn't suit you. It's all about the vision the make-up artist sees and what will complement the hair and clothes.

Strike #4 was: I don't mind if models chat with one another while I'm doing their make-up. What I don't like is when you purposely move your head around me to see your friend and that's exactly what my model did. I can't believe I did this but I actually waited and eye balled her a few seconds before I asked if she could look at me. After a few more times I stopped asking and turned her head in my direction which she did not like but I didn't care.

Strike #5 was: Her friend and her kept whining about how they were so tired of these fashion parties because a) they're only modeling for a bunch of drunk people at a club and b) they were not getting paid. She even assumed that there wouldn't be anyone important from the fashion industry there. Here's a little reality check to all new models or models that are still doing free jobs (excluding some editorial work and charity events): The reason you're still doing free jobs is because YOU'RE NOT A SUPERMODEL! I felt like spelling this out to her but had to bite my tongue so many times. Another little tip about being professional is to watch what you say and who you say it to because you don't know who they know or what they're capable of doing with that information. Never burn your bridges because you never know who you'll be working for!

By that point I wanted to get her make-up done as fast as I could and out of my chair. My husband could also tell I was not at all impressed. What I thought was funny is when she started to show a softer side after she realized the photographer was my husband. I don't know if she thought he was going to say something but she smartened up. However, as soon as he left to get food she was back to her diva attitude. I never like to wish bad things on anyone but I really do hope she does not make it far in the industry. Besides, her face is nothing to be desired and is pretty forgettable. If she does make it to supermodel status I hope someone will be honest enough to put her in her place before she gets there. Let's face it Naomi Campbell has already proved she is not above community service!

The above picture makes me laugh because I remember that was the moment I wanted to jab her eye out. I also thought this picture was appropriate because it not only shows my frustration but her back is turned to hide her identity. Remember - never burn your bridges!

Jean Paul Gaultier Fashion Party at Rockwood

As always at any fashion show it's rare that anything runs smoothly or on time. There's always the stress, drama, egos, and juicy fashion gossip. Well, last night at the JPG party it was no different. Why do we make-up artists/hair stylists do it you ask? Because as much as we hate it we love it! There's a certain creative energy in the air during a fashion show that we artists crave. We feed off each other and are inspired by one another's work.

Key make-up artist Ivy Lam is the wonderful artist that organized our team and created the beautiful look for the night. She was given very little information to begin with and was told the clothes would be from the Fall/Winter 2007 collection. The lighting was probably the worst I'd ever had to work with. We did the make-up using the club lights. Apparently they didn't have main lights but I think the owner was just being cheap. The look Ivy created for the female models, all from NAM Modeling Agency, was dark khol rimmed eyes, champagne colours on the lids, rusty orange in the crease winged out to almost to the temple, neutral cheeks, and glossy nude lips. The male models were touched up with a bit of concealer, powder, bronzer, highlighter, and lip balm.

After all the models were done and the clothes arrived we found out that the models would be wearing the Spring/Summer 2007 collection instead. The stylist and organizer Lulu wanted more colour on the cheeks in the rusty orange we used on the eyes and wanted the guys eyes to be lined with black liner. JPG Spring/Summer 2007 collection is boho chic with a twist of Native American thrown in. His line has a lot of colour and patterns which is why Ivy created a look that wouldn't compete with the clothes. The guys weren't too thrilled they had to wear liner and we weren't either. It just didn't seem right for the look, but as always it's what the client wants that comes first.

The models lined up to get retouched and weren't thrilled about it. Ivy, Mila, and I had to sit through their bitching and complaining about having to be there so long especially since it was not a paid event. Ok, there's was only about 2 girls that were being divas which I will get into on my next post.

After all our hardwork, us make-up artists and my husband that took the pictures for the event got to enjoy the fruits of our labour with complimentary drinks upstairs in the club. The turnout was a little smaller than expected due to the unexpected snow storm and the Versace party that was going on at another venue. The music was amazing and the crowd was pretty, fashionable, and pumped. The models were scheduled to come out at 11 pm but didn't make an entrance until midnight. We had assumed there would be a runway but instead the models were told to stand in certain areas mingling and dancing. I thought a runway would have been a better idea to show case the clothes because the models all clung to each other and you couldn't really see the clothes. They did, however, all come out at once and danced in the middle of the dance floor while we all stopped and watched. I thought it was pretty amusing and cheesy at the same time. We are at a club and the majority of them are in high school and us adults are watching them trying to be sexy and seductive. Something about that felt strangely wrong. They stayed out there for 10 minutes maximum and scurried off back downstairs. Some of them looked embarrassed and unsure of what to do. I felt kind of bad for them, but not really haha.

Our crew left right after the models made an appearance. We just wanted to stay and see the final product which turned out being anti-climatic. All in all, we had fun and it was just great to work side by side Ivy and Mila. I thought some of the models were great but the majority of them just didn't know how to sell the clothes and that's what it's all about. What I also found odd was that the party was advertised as "Parisian Nite" but there was nothing "Parisian" about the night. Bad marketing?

Another fashion week come and gone. Can't wait to do this all again in October!

Beauty News: Rachel McAdams on the Cover of Elle Magazine's April Issue!

Rachel McAdams is probably one of Canada's hottest "It" girls to hit the big screen and now she's taking Europe by storm! What is it about Canada that breeds such talented stars? Maybe it's in the water. Rachel has been a favourite of mine ever since she played the typical popular girl in "Mean Girls" and stole my heart in "The Notebook". She can go from classic beauty to couture trend setter as seen in the pages of Elle.

I know the cover was probably shot a few months before the Oscars but it's kind of odd to see Rachel wearing the same dress Beyonce did at the Oscars. Her pink streak of hair is starting to grow on me. Does anyone know if she did it for a movie role?

Beauty Review: I Feel so Froosh!

I was looking on Toronto.com for a new venue to celebrate me and my friend's birthday in the next few weeks and I came across this fairly new bath and body shop Froosh located in Toronto. All the products are handmade and all natural! The coolest part is that you can book a "Froosh Spa" day with you and your friends where you can relax and learn how to make your own bath products! It's a great idea for a pre-wedding spa day or just for fun! The prices are also really reasonable. The Vanilla Body Butter for example is only $8! One of my obsessions are yummy lip balms and their's is only $3-4! Are those not great prices or what?? Happy shopping!

Make-up 101: Creating the Perfect Smokey Eye

Creating the perfect smokey eye can be a tricky for a novice makeup user, but it doesn't have to be that hard. As long as you have the right tools and instructions you'll be a pro in no time. The picture to the left is a smokey eye I did on a friend for her promo pictures who's an aspiring jazz singer. She wanted a very sultry, smokey eye with big lashes. To achieve this look, I created the classic smokey eye using champagnes, charcoal grays, and blacks. However, the smokey eye doesn't have to be limited to black. I love using deep purples, emerald greens, bronzy browns and navy as well. Alright, lets get started!

Tools:
Brushes are key elements to creating any flawless look especially the smokey eye. If you don't own any brushes, I would definitely go out and buy some. They're good investments and will last you forever with proper care. All the brushes I own are from MAC, but feel free to find the right ones for you. If you can't afford to buy high quality brushes right away, the make-up brand Quo, Shoppers Drug Mart's home cosmetic line has quality brushes at affordable prices. I use a total of 4 brushes for this look: #208 brush for lining and smudging, #217 brush for contouring and shading, the #224 brush for blending, and the #239 brush for shading and applying emollient based products.

To recreate:
1. Always start with a clean fresh face. I also always prep the eye area with eye cream. A smooth base will make applying the eye shadows that much easier.

2. A smokey eye can get messy. What I usually do is apply the foundation and powder only around the upper lid and lower lash line and leave the rest of the face for last. Or you can do what most people do and apply loads of loose powder under the eye with a powder brush. Once you're done you can dust it away.

3. You always want to make sure your eyeshadow will last all night, all day whatever the case may be. Before applying any shadow I like to use MAC's Eye Paints as a base. My favourites to use are Bare Canvas (champagne with shimmer), untitled (light toned grey mauve), Sublime Nature (beige), and Bamboom (beige/brown with golden shimmer great for darker skin tones). The Paints are crease resistant and will help keep your shadow on longer. Apply a small amount from lash line to brow bone with your ring finger or the #239 brush.

4. I then used Shroom eyeshadow a soft golden beige with shimmer to high light under the brow bone and in the inner corner of the eye using the #217 brush. Next, I smudged MAC's Shadestick in Sharkskin (charcoal grey) into the lash line from inner to outer and shaded the eye lid up until the crease bone. I then took my #239 brush and blended the colour out to take away any harsh lines. If you're not sure how to blend with a brush it's basically running the brush back and forth across your eye. The Shadestick is a cream based shadow and I used this first before applying a powder shadow to make the colour more intense and vibrant. It also helps the shadow stay on longer.

5. Using the #239 brush, I applied Carbon eyeshadow a matte black, onto the lid by gently patting it onto the eye. I find patting it on the lid creates less fall off onto the face. You can apply as little or as much shadow depending on the intensity you want. Since it was for a photograph, I applied a lot of the Carbon and also took my #217 brush to contour in the crease area. Your crease is usually where your crease bone is. Some people find shading the crease area to be difficult but a little trick you can use is pretending your drawing a half moon. Start at the center of the eye and bring it out to the outer part of your eye.

I used Shroom again with my #217 brush in the crease to blend the two colours together and to ensure there were no harsh lines between the brow bone and the crease. I then took the #224 blending brush (it's always good to have a clean blending brush on hand free of any eye shadow colours) and blended the whole eye area to give it an airbrushed effect. I usually like to blend as I go along but you can leave it last and do it all at once.

6. I then used my #208 brush and lined the lower lash line with Carbon. If you have smaller eyes skip this step or just line the outer part. I actually find that liner the lower lash line makes smaller eyes stand out more than not lining it. It gives it more definition, but try it and see what works for you. You can take a Q-tip and smudge the line to smoke it out. Since I used fake lashes on my friend, I used a different liner on the top. I love using MAC's Fluidline in Blacktrack with my #208 brush. It goes on like a liquid liner but has a softer finish which is perfect for a smokey eye. I extended the liner a bit past her eye to give her a "winged out" effect to emphasize the fake lashes. To wing out your liner, hold the side of your temple taut and up and follow the line with your brush. It takes some practice, but it gets easier. Instead of drawing a solid line all the way across the lid, I like to use small strokes to ensure proper definition and to avoid mistakes.

7. You can skip this step if you're not using fake lashes. Now that I have lined the upper lash line, I have created a guideline to help me apply the fake lashes. If you have applied the lashes on top of the line then you have applied the lashes wrong. The whole purpose of the line is to see it. Before applying the lashes, curl your own lashes with a lash curler. Take the fake lashes out of the box by pressing down and out starting on one end, then the center, and then the other end with your thumb on the lash. Never pull the lashes out or you will end up tearing the hairs out. I usually test the lashes on the model's eye before actually gluing it. This way you can determine if it needs to be cut or not.

To apply the glue I like to use a toothpick or a metal spatula. Apply the glue on the lash line (use more glue on the outer edges as it typically lifts there first) and wait until the glue is tacky before applying to your eye. This will help it adhere better. The lashes will be applied at the base of the lash. Remember to use your liner as a guideline. Using tweezers or your fingers if you're a pro, apply the lashes starting at the center, then pressing on one side and then the other. It make take a few tries if doing it by yourself so if you need to restart just apply a bit more glue on the ends again.

Once you're done, look up and from side to side. If you can't open your eye then glue has gotten onto your lashes. Just take a bit of eye makeup remover on a Q-tip and run it over the area. If you feel a stabbing pain in the inner corner, then you have applied the lashes too far in. Give it a little tug towards the outer corner. You'll still have a bit of time before the glue completely sets.

8. Apply lots of mascara on the top and bottom lashes. I then relined her lash line to hide the fake lashes.

9. To finish off the look and to give her more shimmer I used MAC's Mineralize Skinfinish in Shimpagne on the inner corner of the eye, brow bone, cheekbone, temples, and above her lip. Bronzer was used in the hollows of her cheeks.

10. To offset a smokey eye, I like to use a pale glossy lip. I lined her lips with MAC's Stripdown, a nude beige and applied MAC's Plushglass in Wildly Lush, a nude apricot over top.

Here is the final shot.

And voila! Your smokey eye is complete! Yeah, you did it! Now it wasn't too hard was it?? There are many ways to do a smokey eye whether it be precise like the above or by simply smudging black eye khol with your finger. Whatever way you choose have fun with it!

Beauty Review: Perk Me Up, Pick Me Up With Smashbox's O-Glow!

I'm finally back to blogging after being away sick for a week. I couldn't manage to drag myself out of bed or off the couch until today! Thank you to those who sent well wishes! I'm still sick but feel a lot better.

Due to my chest cold, I had been feeling icky and my skin has been blotchy. I was tired of looking at my pasty, blotchy skin when I finally decided to pluck my overgrown brows and put on some much needed makeup! If you're ever sick and need some good perk-me-up tips here are some things I did.

1. Take a shower! There's nothing like a good hot shower to make you feel brand new again. I pampered myself by lathering my skin with Philosophy's Mimosa 3 in 1 Body Wash. The scent is so yummy and it reminds me of the summertime.

2. I find when I get sick my skin gets so dehydrated even after drinking a gallon of fluids. To get my skin feeling baby soft again, I moisturized with Lubriderm's Skin Nourishing with Shea and Cocoa Butter . I like it because it has a nice subtle smell and is non-greasy.

3. Before applying my make-up, I wanted my skin to be fresh and smooth. Since my skin was already blotchy, I stayed away from the facial scrubs and decided to do a mask instead. St. Ives has a great one called Blue Clay Firming Mask. The clay lifts away the dead skin cells and firms without drying or dulling the skin.

4. The best tip to bring some life to your face is to choose a great blush. After I concealed and powdered my t-zone, I decided to try Smashbox's O-Glow that everyone had been ranting and raving about. This product is the perfect and easiest blush to apply. You can't go wrong with the colour because the gel based formula (Goji Berry C-Complex) reacts with your skin's chemistry to produce the colour you normally do when you blush or exercise. When you first apply it to the skin, it goes on clear but within seconds it turns into a beautiful rosy shade! Don't be afraid of the bright fuchsia colour when it first hits the skin. Once it's blended into your cheek, it'll look more natural. It stayed put all day and rejuvenated my skin and spirit! I just added some mascara and gloss and voila I was back to life! If you're one of those people that has a hard time finding the right blush try this one and I'm sure you'll be happy with the results.

5. Put on a great outfit, spritz on your favourite scent (I love the sweet cotton candy smell of Aquolina's Pink Sugar), and listen to some upbeat music (at the moment I'm really enjoying Canadian hip hop artist K-OS' "Sunday Morning" song). I didn't actually go anywhere today. I just got all dressed up and danced around the house with my baby boy. I know cheesy - but at least I looked good! haha

Blah, Being Sick Sucks!

The reason I've been MIA (missing in action) lately is because I've been hit with ton of bricks not literally of course but it feels like it! I haven't been this sick in years and to make matters worse I've passed it on to my baby boy :( Thank goodness my mom has been coming over while my husband is in school to take care of me and my boy. I don't know what I would've done without her! No matter how old we get we still need our moms! Anyways, when I feel a little bit better I'll be up and running and ready to blog about everything beauty!
