The Magic of Lash Extensions From Xtreme Lashes

I've always known my lashes were wimpy, but I didn't truly realize just how sad they were until this past Tuesday. I had contemplated getting lash extensions so when the opportunity came up I was all over it!

Xtreme Lash Stylists specialize in semi-permanent lash extensions. I really had no idea what to expect; only that I would no longer be lash-challenged. It is mandatory that you come makeup-free (in other words come looking like crap!), even eye cream is not allowed. This is so that the oils do not interfere with the lash adhesive.

The whole procedure takes anywhere from 60-90 minutes depending on your lashes, the style you want and the skill level of the stylist. You'll also be lying down so be sure to use the washroom, have a good meal beforehand and be prepared for a good nap.

The level of length and thickness depends on the natural state of your lashes. It is not recommended to go too heavy as this actually damages the growth of your lashes. The goal of the extensions is also to make them look as natural as possible so don't expect to go ridiculously long. She mixed blue and black lashes together which gave a really cool effect. The blue adds a nice highlight to my black lashes. It really brightens the whites and enhances my brown eyes even more.

2.5 hours later I had beautifully long lashes. My only wish is that they would have been a bit thicker but otherwise the length is gorgeous! It definitely takes a talented artist to do this because it takes creativity, skill and A LOT of patience to apply those lashes singly. It looks so natural you can't even tell where the natural lash meets the synthetic one.

The adhesive also never touches your skin and is applied 1mm away from your eyelid. The lash adhesive was also specifically made for lashes so it will not damage the natural lash. They last 4-8 weeks from the initial application depending on the natural growth cycle of your eyelashes, with refills that are recommended every 2-4 weeks.

For those of you that love water-proof mascaras or liners, you'll have to keep them away as it is not recommended for the lashes. Oil-based cleansers used to remove water-proof products can break down the glue. Your lashes should have some curl to them but if you want even more curl you have to use a heated lash curler right at the tips rather than a mechanical curler (thank goodness I never threw mine away). It can break both your natural and synthetic lash (bye to my Shu Uemura curler for now). Also, be gentle and try not to rub your eyes too much.

I'd recommend booking your appointment a few days before an event. For 24 hours you should avoid a lot of things including applying mascara - yikes! First 24 hours are crucial in optimal bonding. I had an event the night of and it killed me not to apply my mascara! The length is there but I definitely like it better when there is mascara. Looks much fuller and more noticeable.

Be sure to do your research. Also, you'll want to get quotes and compare prices. After all, it is an investment so you'll want to make sure you're getting your money's worth. If you apply fake lashes religiously then I highly recommend getting semi-permanent lashes. It's healthier for the lash, more natural looking, and much cheaper in the long run.

Overall, I'm extremely pleased with the whole experience and now I'm hooked! How can I go back to those wimpy lashes?? Thank you for the complimentary service!

Happy 10 Years CoverFX!

Happy 10 year anniversary Cover FX!

Last night I attended a beauty blogger's media event put on by the fabulous brand and "foundation authorities", Cover FX. I of course ran in late while the President and Co-Creator, Lee Graff, gave her background on how Cover FX came to be. I hate being late - sorry!

If you don't know the history behind Cover FX, it all started with Lee's dedication to help burn victims and patients with skin disorders achieve flawless skin with superior products and formulations. With Frankel's chemical engineering background, Cover FX was born.

VP and Co-Creator, Jenny Frankel, showing off a scar from a chemical peel gone bad!

It was really an informative night about not only achieving flawless skin, but covering up different skin problems such as rosacea, scars, and even tattoos (not a skin problem but could be a problem if you don't want it seen at a formal affair).

Lee working her magic on a model with rosacea. Did you know Lee has her own blog full of amazing beauty tips and tricks? Check it out here!

Amazing results! Rosacea be gone!

International Communications Director, Wanda Longo, covering up Jenny's scar. Don't forget to check out Wanda's blog!

Jenny's beautiful daughter who has flawless skin already! PR intern/MUA, Katherine, covered up her under eye circles.

As you can tell from the above photos, it's clear why CoverFX is the "foundation authorities". They have a wide range of shades and formulations suited to your skin type. My favourite is the Natural FX Water-Based Liquid Foundation SPF 15 which is great for normal to dry because it leaves a radiant finish. All the products are water-resistant, tear-resistant, and sweat-resistant so it's perfect for extreme conditions.

Launching this March, is the fool-proof The Big Cover Up! 3 Step Essentials Kit ($75 CDN). This kit allows you to custom blend, cover up imperfections, and sculpt and highlight all in one compact! It's so compact and travel-friendly. If you're a makeup artist, it's definitely a kit essential! I learned a little background on the inspiration of this kit from Frankel. She said the big trend with makeup artists in LA was all about sculpting and highlighting their clients while giving them a flawless complexion.

We of course got to try it on ourselves but had to figure out before hand what our colour was. It is available in 4 colour series: B - shades of golden brown to ebony, C - primarily pink undertones, E - a balance of pink and yellow, and M - yellow and/or olive undertones.

Beauty bloggers, Anjali from Rock That Look and Farah from Faces By Farah looking flawless :)

I was lucky enough to be colour-matched by Wanda back in November at the Toronto IMATS. I am in the M series. Fellow beauty blogger, Esther, from In a Nutshell..., graciously allowed me to do her makeup. Did I mention it was our first time meeting? She was also in the M series - actually the majority of us were in the M series!

The 7-piece kit includes:
  • Skinprep FX - Nourishing Foundation Primer and Anti-Aging Serum
  • Cover FX Total Coverage Cream Foundation (3 shades total)
  • Setting FX Translucent Setting Powder
  • #130 Professional Foundation Brush
  • How-to Instructional DVD featuring Lee Graff
The "bullseye" technique before blending on blogger/model Shay from Hey Do You. She could have walked out like that and still been gorgeous!

Wanda demonstrated the "Bullseye" technique that was created specifically for this kit. The lighter shade is applied to the center of the face, medium shade applied to the areas surrounding the lighter shade, and the dark shade applied to the outer perimeter. All three were then blended together using outward strokes and pats with the foundation brush. Then use the powder to set. The result is instant coverage, highlighting and sculpting!

Thanks to the amazing PR rep, Melissa Shum, for organizing this wonderful event!

Some CoverFX essentials. Fell in love with the white-haired brushes!

Cutie Jenn, from Spiced Beauty, posing with her fancy camera ;)

It was a fantastic event and I'm glad I got to see some old faces and meet some new ones! Of course, we were sent home with a sweet thank you card personally hand-written by Melissa and our shade of The Big Cover Up kit! Thank you to CoverFX for designating a night just for us bloggers!

P.S. For those of you in the US, catch Lee and Jenny on HSN airing March 24!

Makeup department head for "The Runways", Robin Mathews, created the rocker smoky look using MAKE UP FOR EVER's Eye Shadows, Smoky Lash mascara, and Aqua Eyes liner.

“I designed ‘The Runaways’ Eyes around MAKE UP FOR EVER Eye Shadows. Their highly pigmented Eye Shadows and Aqua Eyes eyeliners are silky smooth, blendable, and long lasting,” said Robin Mathews.“The color selection is limitless, giving you endless possibilities. I finished each look with Smoky Lash mascara – which is truly smudge proof, a necessity on and off stage.”

Kristen Stewart as Joan Jett - Classic Smoky Eye

1. Start with Eye Shadow #127 (metallic taupe). Cover the entire eye lid with shadow so that there
are no hard edges, making sure to blend out the color extremely well.
2. Using Aqua Eyes #0L (black), apply a very generous amount of eyeliner under the eye on the
lower lid, then rim the top lid as close to lash line as possible.
3. Using a smudging brush, smudge the liner on the top and bottom of the eye. Robin’s tip: the
secret to a great rock and roll smoky eye is all about the smudge – it doesn’t have to be uniform
or neat. Once you’re done smudging, go back and re-apply a heavier coat of eyeliner along the
lash line. Then, remove any excess shadow that may have fallen using a sponge.
4. Apply Eye Shadow #139 (iridescent brown black), a darker brown than the color used on the
base of the lid, and smudge it over the black liner that was smudged out earlier on both the top
and bottom lids.
5. Use a lash curler to lift all the lashes and prep them for applying mascara.
6. To complete the ultimate smoky eye, apply Smoky Lash first to the tops of the lashes, and then
follow through scissoring up to create volume and separation.

Dakota Fanning as Cherie Currie – Colorful Smoky Eye:

1. Apply Star Powder #922 (copper) onto the eye lid, all the way to the inner corner, stopping just
shy of the outer corner.
2. Using Aqua Eyes #3L (iridescent navy blue), line the lash line on the top and bottom lids. Robin’s
tip: for the perfect smoky eye, the trick is to apply the eyeliner as close to the lash line as possible.
3. Smudge the eyeliner on the top and bottom of the eye using a smudging brush to create a more
fluid, blended look.
4. Apply Eye Shadow #81(metallic navy blue iridescent) to the outer corner of the eye using a small
flat brush, then drag the shadow into the crease very lightly.
5. Tap the brush to remove any excess shadow and then blend the blue shadow line ever so slightly.
Using the same brush, apply the blue eye shadow onto the bottom lash line to blend it out and
create a smoky effect.
6. Curl the lashes, then apply Smoky Lash Mascara going up and out to accentuate and elongate
the eye.

Hope For Haiti Beauty Benefit A Success!

It has been over a week since the Hope For Haiti Beauty Benefit on February 7th, but it's never too late to report on what a success it was! This beautiful event was organized by the amazing makeup artist and beauty blogger, Rhia Amio. In less than 2 weeks, Rhia with the help of other volunteers and sponsors, was able to make Hope For Haiti a reality - can we say dedication or what!

Beautiful Malina before I beautifed her

I was honoured to be apart of this beauty fun-filled day and to see so many fantastic women come out to support this amazing cause. The bevy of beauties were primped and pampered with hair and makeup services, indulged in yummy appetizers including some fabulous cupcakes, and got to strike a pose for before and after photos of their glamourous looks. The day of course wouldn't be complete without some fabulous swag and beauty prizes!

Malina's after shot! Look out for her - she's the new face of Toronto Fashion Week March 2010! You might also recognize her from my portfolio.

I'm happy to report that in 5 hours we were able to raise grand total of $2,354 for the Canadian Red Cross...and with the Canadian government matching individual donations until Feb. 12th, that total doubled to $4,708 towards Haiti relief efforts! We were expecting to raise less than that but everyone truly went above and beyond.

Thank you to Rhia and everyone that came out and donated money and their time! It really is a beautiful thing to see beauty lovers and the beauty community coming together for a worthy cause. We hope to make this an annual event for other charities.

Day 14: Happy Valentine's Day!

Happy Valentine's Day beauties! This day is about sharing the love with others but don't forget to love yourself! Be bold, be confident with this beauty of a lipstick!

Julie Hewett Icon of Beauty Lipstick in Scarlett ($22.50 USD): Lipstick lovers will love Julie Hewett's line of lipsticks. Icon of Beauty is an extension of the brand's coveted Noir Lipstick Collection, and includes 3 lipsticks named after 3 Hollywood starlets Thandie, Annette, and Scarlett. Packaged in the same luxe gold tubes, these lipsticks will definitely spark a few admirers.

Icon of Beauty lipsticks are made with the same long-lasting, double-pigmented ingredients with the essence of Rosebud and Camellia oils - oh and they are paraben-free. Scarlett is a stunning creamy shade of carmine-rose-fuchsia - a shade that is definitely not shy. I love how crisp the colour is and how white it makes my teeth look. This is one shade that would look equally fantastic against fair skin and exotic beauties.

It's been a fun series featuring my favourite lippies that are good for you inside and out! I hope you enjoyed it! What was your favourite lip product of this series?

Have you tried this lipstick? Love it? Hate it? Want it?

Day 13: 14 Good-For-You Lippies For Valentine's Day!

One day away! Day 13 features something sweet for the lips and made with real fruit pigment!

100 % Pure Fruit Pigmented Lip Glaze in Strawberry ($16 USD):  Get your daily dose of fruit with this lovely lip glaze. You'll be amazed how many organic fruit pigments are in one lipstick. The moisturizing base is made from avocado and cocoa butters. 100% natural, vegan and gluten-free!

The pigment is described as sheer but the only thing sheer is the texture. It glides on like a light moisturizing lipstick but has the rich colour of a lipstick. Strawberry is bright fun strawberry pink that looks gorgeous against a luminous bronze glow. You'll love the long-lasting colour and the pretty stain it leaves on the lips.

Day 12: 14 Good-For-You Lippies For Valentine's Day!

Another Makeup Junkie favourite from Tarte Cosmetics for Day 12!

Tarte Cosmetics Double Dose Berry Boost & Gloss in Acai Boost ($21 USD): I became a fan of these glosses 2 years ago when Tarte first launched them. Made with only the best skinvigorating ingredients, this gloss gives you a double dose of rich colour and shine to rejuvenate your lips!

Acai Boost is my new favourite from the line. This sheer sparkling raspberry really compliments my complexion. The colour really pops and is all the makeup you really need when wearing this shade. The colour is more pigmented than your average gloss and is rich in texture. My lips stay moisturized for hours and the colour lasts through a couple glasses of wine and even dinner. Once it wears off the colour becomes a nice stain.

Black History Month Celebrates The Black Supermodel

Pictured: Chanel Iman, Sessilee Lopez, Jourdan Dunn, Arlenis Sosa

The future is bright! It's refreshing to see more and more black models taking the fashion world by storm, booking the most coveted campaigns, landing on the cover of magazines and walking for the hottest designers.

The feature on Essence.com lists the top black supermodels of our time dating back to the 1950's. The list included Canadian-born Lana Ogilvie, but did not include fellow Canadian, Yasmin Warsame who I think should be included in the list. Hey, what do I know though?

Day 11: 14 Good-For-You Lippies For Valentine's Day!

Day 11 features a liquid lipstick that will leave you feeling a little naughty!

Cosmoholic Lip Gloss in Promiscuous Pink ($20 USD):  If you have an addiction to cosmetics then you are a "Cosmoholic". Creator, Jody Cohen, wanted to make the beauty world that much simpler by bringing the concept of a lipstick and a gloss all in one product. This "liquid lipstick" glides on like a gloss but has the rich pigment of a lipstick.

These glosses do not contain fragrance but are flavoured with vanilla. Macademia nut oil keeps your pucker moisturized and contains Vitamin E to heal cracked lips, Vitamin C to fight radicals and antioxidants.

Promiscuous Pink is one of those "come hither" pinks. It's bright enough to get noticed but soft enough to still be a little innocent. It really is a gorgeous pink that brightens you up. I was expecting the hue to be a lot richer in pigment but it seemed like any other full coloured gloss. It doesn't feel sticky on the lips and lasted a lot longer than a sheer gloss.

All in all, it's a nice gloss but the concept of a "liquid lipstick" is nothing new. But if you want a gloss with natural ingredients and names with personality then you'll love Cosmoholic!

Also available in: Prudish Pink, Passionate Peach, Mysterious Mocha, Bossy Berry, Rockstar Red, Gold Digger (the only gloss with shimmer).

Have you tried this lip gloss? Love it? Hate it? Want it?

Day 10: 14 Good-For-You Lippies For Valentine's Day!

Day 10 lippie feature is weightless, paraben-free and Canadian!

Beaute Cosmetics Weightless Lip Creme in Girlina ($26 CDN):  If you like the idea of a gloss but want something with more colour and less shine then you'll adore the Weightless Lip Cremes from Beaute. They feel light as mousse on the lips and have long-lasting pigment. When you first apply the product, it feels very smooth and moisturizing, but once it sets it dries to a lipstick finish. Make sure your lips are chap-free and well moisturized prior to application. It will only enhance dry skin.

Girlina is described as a bright but pale Barbie pink. This would look absolutely flirty for V-day with shimmery pale shadow, black liquid liner winged out, luminous skin finished with soft baby doll cheeks! Smoky and sultry more your style? Pair with charcoal grey lids for some allure.

Day 9: 14 Good-For-You Lippies For Valentine's Day!

I just had to feature this kiss-worthy gloss again for its flirty name and its paraben-free quality!

BALMSHELL Lip Gloss in "You Give Me Fever" ($20 CDN): I think the natural flush of the cheeks is such a beautiful colour. It's real, in the moment, and utterly feminine. You Give Me Fever is a sheer rosy cheek pink, inspired by the shade your cheeks turn when you blush. It gives your lips a kiss of pink - enough to get noticed but not so much that your cutie will be turned off.

These paraben-free glosses contain Jojoba oil to moisturize the lips, Lanolin oil to lock in the moisture, and are flavoured with a hint of natural fruity vanilla.

Day 8: 14 Good-For-You Lippies for Valentine's Day!

Day 8 brings a vitamin-infused lipstick good for your lips and the environment!

Tarte Vitamin-Infused Lipstick powered by BORBA in Hatha ($22 USD): Tarte is the first line that created the first line of lipsticks that are good for you inside and out. These long-lasting moisturizing lipsticks include natural ingredients from BORBA's Age Defying, Replenishing and Clarifying lines. Say "hello" to nourished, hydrated, rejuvenated lips!

I love my lipstick sample in Hatha! I had tried Bikram, a sheer pink cream, in the past but definitely prefer the shimmery rose shade of Hatha much more. The neutral rose shade with flecks of shimmering gold make this a perfect everyday colour and reminds me very much of M.A.C.'s Viva Glam V lipstick. Another favourite to add to my beauty stash!
