Summer Beauty Review: It's A Coral Kind Of Summer!

This summer has been all about the corals. My lips have been rockin' everything from orange corals to pink corals. Here are some of my favourite picks this season! (Will have to update with swatches - still no memory card! :()

(Counter clockwise)

Clinique Chubby Stick Moisturizing Lip Colour Balm in Mega Melon ($19 CAD): These chubby sticks bring me back to my kindergarten days when I used to rub crayons on my lips for colour. These balms will drench your lips with moisture. Love the colour pay off too. I was expecting it to be sheer, but the colour payoff is similar to a glossy lipstick. Mega Melon is a beautiful shade just right for bronzy summer skin. It leans more orange than pink so it gives the skin some warmth. I also love the twist-up feature. I hate sharpening gloss pencils - just too messy. Available in 8 shades.

Guerlain Rouge Automatique in Nahema ($35 USD): Luxury in a lipstick tube. Guerlain's signature gold casing and interesting packaging screams luxury. This is the first time my lips have ever been touched by Guerlain and unfortunately I'm in love. The texture is unbelievably creamy. For a long-lasting lip colour, it doesn't dry out your lips and keeps them hydrated. I love the flip-top applicator. No need to take off the cap - just push up and your lipstick pops out. And isn't luxury all about convenience? Nahema is a bright coral sheen. It has a nice mix of both cool and warm undertones so it will work for many skin tones. If you love collecting uber chic and luxurious lipsticks this is one to add to the collection! Available at Sephora.

Revolution Organics Freedom Gloss in Vibe ($26 CAD): You all know my love affair with Revolution Organics so I'm sure it's no surprise I'm featuring the brand again. Vibe is described as "fresh warm peach", but it looks more like a flat orange in the tube. Before trying it I wasn't too keen on this shade, but once it was on my lips I fell in love. There is a slight shimmer and it has beautiful undertones of coral and peach. With the Freedom Glosses, you never feel like you're wearing a gloss. I never have to apply a lip conditioner before applying these glosses. They contain organic plant proteins, oils and shea butter that moisturize and heal the lips.

NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Bolero ($24 USD): New for summer, Bolero is described as "pink cantaloupe". The bright pink swatch on the website is deceiving. Do go to the counter and test this out. I'm featuring this not because I'm totally in love with it, but I think it's an interesting shade for summer.

What I love:
  • The matte texture is a nice alternative to the usual glossy lips for summer. When you wear shimmer on the eyes and face it's important to keep one area non-shimmery. A matte lip is the perfect compliment.

  • It accentuates your tan. This shade will look different on everyone. On paler skin, more of the pink undertones will come out. On bronzy skin, it will look edgy and you'll look more golden. Reminds me of day glo lip balms with sunblock. Deeper skin tones should be wary though - it might make you look ashy.

What I hate:
  • The matte texture. My lips can get extremely dry and chapped. The combination of this texture and shade just accentuated the dryness even more. But with a little lip balm, it wore pretty good but settled into my lines.

  • You have to sharpen the pencil.

Stila Convertible Color in Petunia ($25 USD): Petunia is such a pretty pinky coral shade. It looks amazing with a bit of bronzer and really perks up the skin. The finish is creamy and gives the skin a lovely glow. It'll never look overdone because it melts right into the skin. The shade is highly pigmented yet it's very easy to blend. You can wear them on the lips, but I find it dries mine out too much. But it works great as a base for glosses. If your skin needs a good pick-me-up or you're in a rush these are perfect, but don't expect it to last in humid sticky weather! Tip: Make it last a little longer with translucent powder or a powder blush in a similar shade.

Have you tried any of these lovely corals? What colours have you been wearing a lot of this summer?

How To Beat The Bed Rest Blues: Makeup Part 2

I'm no longer on bed rest, but you still want to know what kept me looking pretty right? Right!

6. Revolution Organics All Over Body Balm ($28 USD): I've raved about this product before and I'll rave about it again (you can read my review here)! This eco-chic all-purpose body balm really came in handy when I was in the hospital. I didn't want to pack too much so this worked as my belly stick, lip balm, and hand cream!

7. Revolution Organics Freedom Glow Beauty Balm ($34 USD): You want the perfect glow? I love these coloured beauty balms for the eyes, lips and cheeks. Yes, I've featured these a few times before and I love them so much I packed all 3 (click here for past reviews). Since I was missing out on some major sun, Bronzed gave me that faux tan my skin needed. I loved using it on my eyes and to contour my cheeks (you know gotta give the illusion of slim cheeks when your pregos!). Sunkissed  (coral peach), is so hot for summer right now. I used this one most often. It'll leave your skin looking - well - sunkissed! I loved Blushed (bright pink) on my lips and looked gorgeous with Bronzed on the lids and cheeks.

8. NARS Mayflower Lipstick (LE, Summer 2011, $24 USD): When I first saw this lipstick in the tube, I didn't fall in love right away. But after first swipe, I was hooked. It's described as sheer raspberry, but on me it pulled warmer tones of coral and raspberry-pink. It's the summer version of your lips-but-better, well on me at least! I also adore how moisturizing the texture is. I can usually just swipe this on with minimal makeup and it still perks up my complexion.

9. Lancome Juicy Tubes Awakening of Love (LE, $22 CAD): This review is a little late. I had meant to feature this in time for Toronto's Luminato Festival, but didn't get around to it for good reason. Lora Spiga, Lancome's Official Makeup Artist for Canada, created 3 Juicy Tubes shades and Desert Rose Blush to compliment designer, Denis Gagnon's, Garden of Roses: Denis Gagnon Interprets Alice that was featured during Luminato.

I received Peace & Flowers, a gorgeous shimmering warm pink. The shade is sheer, but it adds subtle colour with a whole lotta shine! For some simple shine and a bit of colour, I wore it on its own. When I wanted more colour, I loved pairing it with NARS' Mayflower and my Revolution Organics Beauty Balms. This Juicy Tube collection (3 shades in total) will be apart of Lancome's Bronze Azure summer 2011 collection.

Have you tried any of these products? Love 'em? Hate 'em? Want 'em?

Summer Beauty Review: Looking Pale? 5 Bronzers To Give You That Faux Glow!

What is it about sun-kissed skin that everyone longs for? Hmm, I can think of a few reasons. You look healthier, don't have to wear as much makeup, and everyone thinks you just came back from the most fabulous getaway.

There are a variety of bronzers on the market to suit your fancy. Read up on what I think of this summer's latest bronzers-on-the-block!

1. Clinique Almost Bronzer SPF 15 ($34 CAD): They call this "almost bronzer" for a reason. If you have a bronzer phobia, but long for a touch of sun you will love this bronzer. The application is very, very sheer. It claims it's long-wearing, but because I received the Light/Medium sample I couldn't see it at all on my skin. It also says it's buildable which I'm sure is true if you have very fair skin. You can combine the two shades for an all over natural colour or use one to contour and the lighter to highlight. For me, this bronzer was a bust especially at $34, mainly because I couldn't truly test its potential and I didn't have a chance to try it on someone fairer than me. Anyone else try this?

2. Lancome Star Bronzer in #3 ($46 CAD): This long-wearing bronzer will be featured this summer in a new slim case with a clic closing. I love the embossed design - it reminds me of sun rays shining over the brand's classic rose emblem. It even has a rose scent to it. The bronzer is lovely on and the shimmer is very subtle so you get the most natural glow. The shade is very buildable and long-wearing. You won't have to worry about looking orange this summer - just pure golden baby! Keep in mind, it comes with a hefty price tag but if you love Lancome and love luxury bronzers this is one to get.

3. Revolution Organics Freedom Glow Beauty Balm in Bronzed ($34 CAD): These eco-friendly beauty balms of goodness are perfect for the "no makeup" makeup look. I love the glow it gives my skin. The sticks are very creamy and sinks into the skin leaving a gorgeous tint of colour behind. It doesn't leave a greasy residue. Don't expect these to last all day though. I found it lasted longer when I didn't prime or put any foundation on. On bare skin, it actually stayed better. These are perfect for when you want a bronzey tan on-the-go or when you're going to the beach. You can swipe the Bronzed shade on your lids, cheeks and lips and you're good to go. Keep in mind, if staying out in hot weather for a long time these can melt! Solution: throw it in with the drinks in your cooler!

4. Vasanti Brazilian Powder - Brightening Mineral Powder ($25 CAD):  First, the packaging is beautiful with its unique artisan inspired paperboard with hand made accents. Being the less pricier of the 5, this is an awesome bronzer for what you get. It contains a nutrient-rich formula with anti-aging properties to keep your skin looking radiant and youthful. It has a shimmery finish to it but instead of looking shiny it leaves a gorgeous sheen. You'll be glowing in all the right places! Tip: make sure your skin is properly powdered before applying. Because it is so velvety smooth, I found I had to buff my skin really well before it looked blended.

5. Bobbi Brown Bronzing Powder in Deep Chocolate (LE, $40 CAD): You want chocolate? This bronzer is a true rich chocolate. The finish is matte yet silky so you'll never look muddy or dirty. Deep Chocolate is one I recommend for medium-dark to deep skin. I'm no where as tanned as I would be in the height of summer, but if I use it sparingly it leaves a lovely bronzed finish to my skin. I also like using this to contour or as a shadow. It's also available in Rich Cocoa and might be better for someone who has fair to medium skin. Remember to use a bronzer buffing brush or a big powder brush to apply your bronzer so it leaves a believable natural tan!

Top - Bottom: Clinique, Lancome, Revolution Organics, Vasanti, and Bobbi Brown

Have you tried any of these bronzers? What are your favourite bronzers for a natural summer glow?

A Mother's Day Wish List

Happy soon-to-be Mother's Day! Ok, most moms are run-down, tired, and maybe a tad crazy, but being a mommy has its perks. Nothing beats little hugs and kisses, cute scribbles that are supposed to be you, and hearing "I love you - you're the best mommy (no joke my son says this to me on a daily basis!), but we get to be pampered and spoiled with gifts for one whole day all for being an awesome mom! Really, moms should be recognized everyday but I'll take what I can get.

I really don't expect much on Mother's Day - a good brunch with my boys and letting me do nothing is good enough. But...who doesn't like gifts? This is my wish list and hopefully you can get some ideas for the special moms in your life!

Revolution Organics All-Over Body Balm ($28 CAD): As you can see, I don't have any makeup on my wish list at the moment - I know shocking! But right now, I have pretty much everything I could ever want. The All-Over Body Balm from Revolution Organics has been on my "Want" list for a while especially since I got pregnant. I was pleasantly surprised to receive it recently and it couldn't have come at a better time! My skin has been especially dry on my face and my belly has been getting the itchies due to this growing baby. I love that this comes in a portable stick - I throw it in my purse and I'm prepared for an itch attack anytime of the day. You can rub it straight out of the tube on anything from your head to your toes, that needs instant moisture. I love it and when we're out, I use it on my son who has eczema. It's all-natural and has a bunch of organic ingredients that help repair and hydrate the skin. It's the perfect gift for any mom-to-be or moms-on-the-go!

Parisian Chic: A Style Guide By Ines De La Fressange ($34 CAD): The idea of having a Kobo crossed my mind, but the truth is I love keeping original books. I found out about this book from Stephanie of BlushPretty and I knew I had to have it. I love little books like this especially since I have a love affair with anything Parisian (weird since I haven't even traveled there yet - insert sad face). If you've always wondered about the mystic behind Parisian women's effortless beauty, model Ines De La Fressange shares the well-kept secrets of fashion, decor, beauty and much more! You will love the photography and her charming sketches. Who doesn't love receiving books? Top it off with TIME to actually read it and this gift is golden!
Valentino Cat-Eye Tortoise Sunglasses ($250 USD): I did makeup for an event at my best friend's optical the other day and absolutely fell in love with these shades! Cat-eye shaped sunglasses may not seem like a classic shape, but this one really works for the roundness of my face. I especially loved the little "v" cut-out detail on the sides of the glasses. Besides eye cream, a pair of good shades will keep your eyes protected from the sun this summer and keep wrinkles at bay!

Maxi Dresses: I found this one on Motherhood Maternity, but it's not necessarily the one I want. I figure with the hot summer and my prego belly, a maxi dress will look stylish, be easy to throw on, and most importantly keep me cool. I really dislike a lot of maternity clothes, so I will be shopping around and will most likely buy regular clothes in Large. I seriously need to stock up on dresses asap! What mom doesn't like a shopping spree? A sure winner!

What are your must-get items for the special moms in your life? For all the moms out there, what's on your 'want' list?

Revolution Organics All-Over Body Balm was sent for editorial consideration and I truly love it.

Makeup Junkie Loves These Eco-Friendly Brands!

Happy Earth Day and Happy Good Friday! How are you celebrating Earth Day? The last few days I've been a little obsessed with baby shopping. As many of you know, we are expecting our 2nd child this summer and we couldn't be more thrilled! Instead of buying a slew of brand new baby items, I've been reaching out to my mommy friends to see if they have any items they would like to lend or give away- reuse and recycle! My friend came up with a fabulous idea for a baby shower. Instead of people buying stuff from a registry, she suggested we do a recycling party! Genius right? And so economical and eco-friendly for everyone involved. Lets face it - babies outgrow things quickly so most items are like new anyways. We are, however, buying bigger items brand new like a stroller and car seat - those things you just can't skimp on.

If indulging in some beauty products is your way of celebrating Earth Day, indulge in my favourite eco-chic brands guilt-free! When I buy products for myself I tend to gravitate towards the green lines. After all, if you're going to spend the money why not get more bang for your buck by investing in something good for you and the environment?

1. Consonant Body Ultra Moisturizing Lip Conditioner ($12 CAD): I discovered this Canadian brand at The Beauty Board. The rep was kind enough to give me some samples to try out. I love this lip balm! My lips just drank it up, but sadly it didn't last too long. I didn't have to reapply too often throughout the day, but I did use it daily. It lasted for about a month. It's around the same price of my beloved Korres Lip Butter which lasts a lot longer and is a tad more moisturizing. Otherwise, the lip balm does the job!

2. Korres Lip Butter Glaze in Jasmine ($18 CAD): When I found out Korres came out with a tube version of the Lip Butter, I had to have it. I was out of my Guava lip balm and decided to try out the Glaze even though it is more a gloss than balm. I chose Jasmine, a soft nude pink since it is the closest to looking clear. It's a very pretty nude-pink on my lips with a slight shimmer. These glosses are super hydrating and shiny without the gookiness, but it didn't get rid of my chapped lips completely. I still have to apply a balm underneath to get my lips super soft and smooth. But as a gloss, this is one of the most hydrating glosses I own and the colour lasts a lot longer than most glosses. The squeeze tube packaging is also super convenient - no finger dipping! The buttery vanilla scent is also scrumptious but isn't too overwhelming. I definitely want to try the more vibrant shades in the line!

3. Tarte LipSurgence Natural Matte Lip Tint in Lively ($28 CAD): While on a Sephora shopping trip with Stephanie from Blush Pretty, she gabbed about how much she loved these chubby pencils. I immediately fell in love with Lively, a deep hot pink. I decided to forgo on the purchase since I have waaay too many lip products especially pink ones! Unfortunately, I thought about it constantly and decided that my friend's wedding was a good excuse to buy it! Since I was doing makeup for her wedding, I decided a bright lip would be the easiest way to look made up quickly. The shade looks more like a raspberry pink on me, but I adore it! I received so many compliments that night. It's one of those shades that make your teeth look whiter. The texture is matte, but applies very smoothly. The pigment is vibrant, but if you're eating has average lasting power. It claims to moisturize your lips up to 6000% - I have no idea where they came up with this absurd number - but I didn't find it did that. It did dry out my lips after a few hours and I always have to wear a lip balm with it. However, it is one of the more hydrating matte lip products I've used. The pencil is also really easy to apply and shape the lips. Love this version over NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencils because you don't have to sharpen (besides the eco-friendly ingredients)! Just twist the bottom!

4. Josie Maran Cream Blush in Sunset ($26 CAD): Have I mentioned before how much I adore cream blushes? They are fast and easy to use and gives you a healthy dose of glowing colour. This I did purchase on my shopping trip with Stephanie. Sunset is a really unique shade to me because I don't own anything like it. It's described as a coral, but looks more pinky-peach on me and brightens my skin. The blush applies easily onto the skin, but I do find I have to apply a few layers for a stronger pigment. The lasting power is pretty good, but I did have to apply once again close to the evening. Of course, this blush is good for your skin because it contains Josie's signature ingredient 100% Pure Argan Oil which repairs and replenishes the skin. It comes in a really sleek case that is light-weight so it's easy to travel with. Plus, the packaging is made from biodegradable corn plastic!

5. Revolution Organics Freedom Glow Beauty Balm in Blushed ($34 CAD): I've raved about Revolution Organics before and I don't mind doing it again! Another eco-friendly Canadian brand, this line offers a multi-tasking beauty balm. Love it. Blushed is a bright pink that looks lovely on your cheeks and lips. It just adds a nice pop of colour that instantly perks you up. I wouldn't necessarily wear this on the eyes, but you can if you're into pink on the eyes. The pigment is amazing and blends easily into the skin. It's pricey, but rightfully so. It contains eco-friendly ingredients that are good for you plus offers versatility. Plus, a little goes a long way because of it's long-lasting finish. It definitely rivals NARS' Multiple which is more expensive, but in terms of colour options Revolution needs to expand!

Have you tried any of these eco-chic brands? What are your favourite green lines?

Beauty Feature: Celebrate Earth Day With Revolution Organics

Happy Earth Day! I think often we walk this earth and take it for granted. It's so vast that we don't think about how everything around us is all connected. We don't realize that whatever happens to the earth directly affects us. I still get surprised when I see people throw their trash on the city streets and sidewalks. I say, take care of the earth like you would take care of your home.

I'm celebrating Earth Day by wearing some new eco-friendly favourites from Canadian line Revolution Organics! Revolution Organics products are formulated with 100% natural and 85% certified organic ingredients. You won't find harsh chemicals, parabens, mineral oil, petroleum or artificial ingredients in their products. The packaging is also 100% recyclable and biodegradable.

Revolution Organics Freedom Glow Beauty Balm in Blushed ($36.95 CDN): I've always been a fan of multi-tasking products. Some critics think you lose some level of quality with multi-use makeup, but I've always found them useful on its own or for layering. This ultimate multi-tasker beauty balm can be used on the eyes, lips and cheeks for a natural dewy finish. It is also formulated with cold-pressed organic olive oil and deeply moisturizing organic coconut oil to keep your skin hydrated. The cool stick packaging makes it convenient for on-the-go gals. The line doesn't have nearly the same amount of shades as NARS' cult classic, The Multiple, but it's a good dupe that is cheaper and all-natural.

I adore Blushed, a true rosy flush. It truly is a beautiful shade and a fantastic perk-me-up that makes you look like you're glowing from within. The formulation never looks like it's sitting on your skin. Upon opening, the bright pop of pink may shock you but once on the skin applies sheer and can be layered for the perfect amount of pigment. Made with pure mineral pigment, the colour lasted on my cheeks all day with a setting powder and required a mini touch-up with no setting powder (I love my blush!).

On the lips, it feels like a lip balm but looks like a stain. I love it. When I'm in a rush, I dab a bit on my lips and I'm good to go. It had good staying power. Now, most wouldn't think to use this shade on the eyes but if you're into pinks you can use this to make your powder shadows pop. Apply first in the outer corner or in the crease and layer a pink powder shadow over top for more depth and staying power. Combine with a soft shimmering pink, white, or gold - pretty!

Revolution Organics Freedom Gloss in Integrity ($28.95 CDN): I love all the names because they inspire and evoke a feeling. Integrity is a shimmering golden rose. I'm already a fan of these ultra-moisturizing good-for-you glosses (you can read my review here). It is lovely shade and is very sheer. On its own it gives me a pretty shimmer with a hint of colour and highlights the lips when layered over a lipstick. This is the only gloss my son lets me kiss his cheeks with so that's an A+ in my books! It may be a little pricier than other brands, but that's the price you pay for quality, good-for-you products.

There are many ways to be good to the environment whether it is using reusable bags, eating organically grown foods, or using only all-natural beauty products. Do some beauty good with these earth friendly tips:
  • Use beauty products that aren't made with toxic chemicals that are harmful to the environment and bad for your body.
  • Refillable palettes are a great way to reuse, reduce, recycle. Palettes are also great space savers.
  • Choose brands that only use recyclable and 100 % biodegradable packaging. Some lines also offer a recycling program. Check this site for a list of recycling programs.
What are some of your earth-saving tips? Have you tried Revolution Organics? Love it? Hate it? Want it?

Beauty Feature: Spring Love

Spring is in the air! Can you feel the love? Makeup Junkie receives hoards of beauty products to try out and I love giving you the skinny on what's hot in spring trends. Here are some of my faves so far. Stay tuned for more spring goodies!

Revolution Organics Freedom Gloss in Freedom: I was excited to find this lippie in my swag from the Toronto Beauty Blogger Brunch last month. Totally loving this gloss! Why? Revolution Organics products are formulated with 100% natural and 85% certified organic ingredients. I love good-for-you glosses that are rich in vitamins and antioxidants. You won't find harsh chemicals, parabens, mineral oil, petroleum or artificial ingredients in this gloss. The packaging is also 100% recyclable and biodegradable.

Freedom is a lovely strawberry red derived from an all-natural mineral-based pigment. It's spring love in a gloss! Freedom gives you the perfect kiss of red on the lips that it not over-powering. If you love glosses that appear more like a moisturizing stain then you will love this one. It's not a high-shine gloss but I don't mind because it's so wearable for day. The gloss applies sheer but is buildable. If you are hesitant to rock a red lip during the day try this one out!

Mary Kay Cheek Glaze in Mandarin & Pomegranate: When I first opened these eye-popping shades of gel stains, I knew these would be a spring hit! I love gel stains because they not only last but they give your skin a beautiful glow. These felt very light-weight and never felt sticky or tacky. Don't be afraid of the bright juicy hues - they apply sheer and are extremely buildable. In fact, I had to apply a few layers to get the ideal intensity. Love both shades - Mandarin fits perfectly into the coral trends and Pomegranate is a classic berry flush. They are infused with extracts of Mandarin, Orange, Watermelon, Peach and Vitamin E. It can also double up as a lip stain! These pots offer a lot of product and are awesome to use if you're a makeup artist. Just scoop out with a spatula and apply! Available March 16.

O.P.I. Hong Kong Collection Hot & Spicy: I attended an exclusive launch sometime last Fall and was ecstatic to receive a manicure and the entire collection! I'll admit, there were some shades I wasn't in love with and gave away but there are definitely a few keepers. On the coral trend again, Hot & Spicy is such a great melon-coral. It's not too orange and really pops against your skin especially if you have a tan. Loves!

Vasanti Lipstick in Denmark: This lipstick has got my pulse racing! I've been on the hunt for a fuchsia-magenta shade like Denmark. This is a bold notice-me lip shade that is new for spring and would look amazing with a nude or bronzey eye. The texture is ultra creamy and highly pigmented. It lasted on the lips and even left a nice stain after eating and drinking. Denmark looks gorgeous when paired with a LBD or neutral clothing.

Vasanti The Hamptons Eye Colour Palette: Well, this is probably the closest I'll get to visiting the Hamptons for now! Vasanti shadows are not only gorgeous but have a fabulous velvety texture and are highly pigmented. The set includes: soft neutral beige, soft peachy pink, neutral deep brown, periwinkle grey, and intense rich navy. All the shades are wearable and can easily go from day to night. I actually used the periwinkle grey and navy on a shoot yesterday. Produced a sultry smokey eye nicely. Also new for spring, this palette compliments the new lipstick shades Denmark, Sweden (nude pink), and Luxembourg (nude brown).

Have you tried any of these lovelies? Love 'em? Hate 'em? Want 'em?
